Are there any trades in modern (i.e. free agency era) American sports that come close to this when you take the context into account?
>player locked down for years
>team is competitive
>no big name in return
>player didn't demand trade
>player is performing well
Even the Luka trade got a star player in return, and was only had one more season guaranteed. Latter also applies to the Mookie trade (both almost certainly would've been lifers with the original team as long as they didn't massively lowball, but still)
Devers is one of the top hitters in the game, the sox have a winning record, just swept their rival, there are 8 more seasons on the contract after this year, and the best part of the return is a pitcher that has a good amount of upside but is a very raw talent and is far from a surefire star.

Arenado? Stanton? Their original teams weren't actually winning shit, so they miss that checkbox, but they're the only "trade this guy so we don't have to pay out the contract we signed them to" deals for good players I can come up with recently.
