because the percentage of teams in it that have SOVL and are desperate to win it, has gone up from the days when it was only 8 teams in the whole thing.

pure technical brilliance is now not actually relevant. when you have this much SOVL the tournament retains its relevance regardless of the ability on show. there is now this awkward pressure for the European teams that the tournament is proving itself to be relevant whether they like it or not, and so they now pretty much will have to try and win.
