These are European teams who have had a full season plus Europe playing in a Mickey Mouse cup they are basically forced to join. They kind of just want to get this over with asap and get players rested for the next season, where things actually matter. If they go all the way in the tournament, they're already at preseason, so you're really not getting European teams at their best here, regardless of how much sudacas or american plastics want to believe otherwise.

Almost all European teams basically get paid more just to show up anyway. Go look up the distribution of the prize money. Not to mention, teams in the Champion's League make bank beyond what the competition itself provides from TV rights, market pool distribution, etc.

Turns out the End of Season tax seems to be harsher than people thought. I at least didn't think it would be that bad. Brazillian teams always played the Intercontinental exhausted post-season and got utterly trounced, and we all just accepted that it was because Europe was on another level. Seems when the tax reversed for this championship, truth was more in the middle. Couple this with a few other factors - lesser motivation as this tournament is new and not as prestigious yet in European eyes, rough weather they're not used to, etc - and it seems to have created the perfect storm to allow Non-European teams to bridge the technical gap by leveraging physical superiority.

This is not an excuse, btw. European teams have the economical power to mitigate all these factors. Lack of motivation is a mental and cultural issue that the rest of the world is not responsible for fixing. Physical factors can be mitigated by roster depth and by saving players throughout the regular season so they'd be fresher for this competition - something I can attest at least my Brazillian team did. And that, too, is a merit of the non-european teams/demerit of the European ones.
