These are European teams who have had a full season plus Europe playing in a Mickey Mouse cup they are basically forced to join. Turns out the End of Season tax seems to be harsher than people thought. I at least didn't think it would be that bad. Brazillian teams always played the Intercontinental exhausted post-season and got utterly trounced, and we all just accepted that it was because Europe was on another level. Seems when the tax reversed for this championship, truth was more in the middle. Couple this with a few other factors - lesser motivation as this tournament is new and not as prestigious yet in European eyes, rough weather they're not used to, etc - and it seems to have created the perfect storm to allow Non-European teams to bridge the technical gap by leveraging physical superiority.

This is not an excuse, btw. European teams have the economical power to mitigate all these factors. Lack of motivation is a mental and cultural issue that the rest of the world is not responsible for fixing. Physical factors can be mitigated by roster depth and by saving players throughout the regular season so they'd be fresher for this competition - something I can attest at least my Brazillian team did. And that, too, is a merit of the non-european teams/demerit of the European ones.
