>>149653531If in Rio, the south zone, where all tourists stay, is fine to be alone, though that doesn't mean it's completely safe. You should be aware of your surroundings because tourists are scammers and pickpockets' favourite prey. There's also armed robbery, but it's worse at night. Avoid using public transportation, Uber is everywhere. The city center is nice but full of thieves. Barra da Tijuca is an upscale neighborhood on the western part of the city that's also generally safe.
Avoid being alone at night. If you want to go the north or the western zones of the city, only go with a local. Avoid favelas at all cost, it's not worth it even if you have a tour guide.
Rio is beautiful despite all this, but some of the cities nearby Rio are top tier and a lot safer (though still exercise caution).
Anywhere else in Brazil, idk. I've never left Rio for more than a week.
>>149654394Yeah inside of the favelas you're generally safe, the drug traffickers generally don't like when theft happens inside of the communities. If you manage to get recognized by the locals you're pretty much safe to do anything, even walk around with your phone out which is practically unheard of elsewhere in the city.
I'd say there's still some nice neighbourhoods but yeah most of them are unsafe due to robberies. Still I hope things get better. Getting people out of the favelas should be top priority, no one deserves to live in those conditions. I think things could be slowly getting better since many young people are leaving the favelas for government housing. At least in the place where I live it's now mostly older people around.
