Being in a stadium when a horrific injury happens is almost a religious experience. Tens of thousands of people going completely silent and still at once. You will certainly never forget it if you experience it in person.

My grandpa was in the stadium in 1965 when Uwe Seeler, arguably Germany‘s most beloved player ever, a hero of the people, and captain and star striker of the national team, tore his Achilles tendon. Back then, that was seen as a career-ender. My grandpa said that the tendon tear sounded like a gunshot everyone in the stadium heard, and then everyone was dead silent indeed (it was an away game for Seeler‘s Hamburg). Everyone thought he was done, it was national news for days. Must have been a bone-chilling experience
Seeler became the first player to recover from this injury and resume his career. The injury happened in February, and he scored the winning goal in the deciding World Cup qualifier for the 1966 Cup in September on his comeback
