The first World Cup, the British nations refused to go because the beleived they were far suerior than anyone else
Then almost the same happened when what it is now the UEFA Champions League was created. Where coincidentially, Chelsea were the champions of England at the time
And now that they took part in the first edition of a new tournament, they actually won it

Kinda ironic if you think about it, some life lesson you can learn from that. Maybe England was indeed the best in the 30s, and of course they wouldn't know how big the World Cup would became, but if they went and steamrolled the first edition before the rest of the world caught up, it wouldn't be just one Jules Rimet gleaming. Maybe the discourse of them being a football powerhouse would be very different.
Kinda like how it is with the Celtics in the NBA
