Some of them legitimately are clubs, though this is non-existent in American pro sports. There are amateur sports clubs here, though.

A lot of football clubs started as clubs for people to play for fun and then evolved into these multimillionare business you see today

Football (soccer) clubs are called that because a large mayority of them are gatherings of people who want to play some sports together, its a *social entity*. At least in here, most football clubs also offer sign ups to take part in other sports for recreation or competitive purposes.
Im not sure if the US has many of these because most of them seem to be entirely privately owned and the only thing they hire is personel (players or backroom staff), you cant say, have a talk with the administration of the Lakers to use their court to play a basketball game with your friends, or practice on it.
