They need to bring this back. Irish Gaelic Football v Australian Rules Football

Considering the Irish lads are still amateurs playing for their counties and the AFL is a huge thing it's close.

Absolutely but knowing the GAA they'd fuck it up.

Like many competitions before it that aren't called the Allianz League or the All-Ireland, the GAA treated it as an afterthought and decided to fuck with the formula. That, and it wasn't as big in Australia which is odd given half of Ireland's youths are over there. They also worried about the fights (the best part of the whole thing). It could easily be held around December when the AFL is off and the club competitions are mostly done (bar the All Ireland Club Championship, which the GAA also fucked up) or have it in January while the dead-rubber inter-county pre-season tournaments and collegiate tournaments happen. For Christ's sake, the hurling-shinty crossover is still happening around October time.

AFL would want it in October/November, they won't be keen on December because their season ends beginning of October (or last weekend of September icr). They won't want it in their February preseason because the clubs will argue about any potential injuries.
Maybe the GAA can put the All-Ireland back to September then have int rules, a man can dream

I liked it, I’d like to see it come back.

True but a lot of their team would be AFL players

I think the GAA defense they wanted to protect their brand the gap between the pro's and the amo's was pretty big so they just used the fights (not that they happened much anymore) as a reason to can the thing before they got exposed

international rules is a complete waste of time, benefits no-one, and is a horrible bastardisation of both sports. the afl is successful enough internationally that it provides no benefit anyway. it's like the concept of state of origin coming back to afl, complete waste of money trying to be more like nrlel in spite of the fact that nrl is objectively less popular nationally and internationally. don't steal ideas from losers.
