I just don't get it. Sure, they had great players like Drogba and Yaya Toure, but they got back-to-back groups of death.

>In 2006, they had to face off against Argentina and Netherlands, but they lost both matches competitively (2-1 each). Even then, the goal they scored against Netherlands was a fucking banger.

>In 2010, they once again had to face off tough teams. They got a 0-0 draw against Portugal (could also have won if Drogba decided to take a shot in the last few minutes instead of passing to nobody), but lost 3-1 to Brazil. (In hindsight, Chile who made knockouts didn't even score a consolation goal and lost 3-0 so not that bad). Both of these teams lost to the eventual world cup finalists.

>In 2014, their golden generation was getting old but only got grouped due to conceding a last minute penalty against Greece. Gervinho's goal against Colombia was also one of the highlights for them that year.

Bar 2014 when they got unlucky I don't see why everyone considers the generation was a disappointment, imo they performed as well as expected. What do you think? Is their golden generation really a failure?

Drogba in Chelsea
Yaya in Barcelona, then City
Kolo in Arsenal
Kalou in Chelsea
Eboue in Arsenal
Gervinho in Arsenal

I'm sure I'm forgetting some more

literally nobody with an iq above room temperature gives two shits about the world cup, anything other than winning is a failure and only like 4 teams have a realistic chance of ever winning the rigged cup so it's completely irrelevant for everyone beside said teams
now that we've established that let's look at their afcon record, in 06 they lost to >us twice with drogba shitting himself against elhadary numerous times, in 08 they lost to us again and in 2010 they lost to algeria who we later 4-0'd. so yes they were an absolute failure especially considered they had a stacked squad

Strange how only Egyptians constantly bitch about the world cup, but now that I think about it, it's probably just one person spreading this narrative. What an awful, sad mentality to have. Go support your team that's currently on top of their qualifying group instead of typing out shit like this. Either way they won one AFCON and you can't expect them to dominate every single time. Shit happens.

>>149958638
That's a pretty high bar tbf. Like I get expecting them to make it deep but they didn't have a stacked squad of players (bench options) like some other top teams.

the world cup has always been and will always be a corrupt, rigged, artificial circus designed for tourists and casuals. why should i give a single fuck about it?
>What an awful, sad mentality to have
the awful sad mentality is celebrating qualifying to that clown tournament without having any chance of doing anything because it's never a level playing field for a multitude of reasons or even thinking that making it past some group stage without winning anything is some achievement, it's fucking pathetic. people constantly shit on clubs like arsenal for the same thing for a reason, only trophies matter, they're the only objective metric to measure greatness and the last forever
>you can't expect them to dominate every single time
you asked why they're considered a failure and i answered, you're just a bitch who can't handle the truth
they are a failure because they failed to win the tournament on multiple occasions when they had the strongest team on paper, that's failure no matter how you spin it. stop celebrating mediocrity and grow a pair

Morocco reaching semifinals is more important than all the Afcon Egypt has won in all their history. Roger Milla in 1990 did more for African football than anyone could've done it in the Afcon.
Senegal beating the world cup holders, Ghana being a penalty away from semis, all of that more relevant than the regional cup. All continental cups that aren't the Euro and maybe Copa America don't have any weight on football prestige
>the world cup has always been and will always be a corrupt, rigged
Different from the continent that is known for not being corrupt at all and would never even think about fixing a game. Fucking Africa

Mexico failing at the World Cup is the best example why the World Cup matters
If it wasn't for that, their only competition would be the Gold Cup, and because Mexico is the most succesful team there, it means that Mexico is good right? Because winning a regional cup is better than any other result in the World Cup

While I generally agree that CAF>CONCACAF, I don’t think that any CAF team can say they’re outright better than the US or Mexico. Just jewgling around, the US is 12-2-6 vs CAF teams since 2000. In fact, I argue CAF teams can be overrated like such as Ivory Coast, though in general I think it’s both over and underrated.

They're not condemned over the World Cup but their AFCON record. They would walk qualifiers and choke at the AFCON.
2006 - acceptable final loss coz they were starting out and did KO Cameroon and Morocco
2008 - lost badly to Egypt, and for second successive edition.
2010 - lost to Algeria in QF at the peak of their powers.
2012 - choked in the final to Zambia.
2013 - choked in the QF to a so-so Nigerian team, which did go on to win.

They should have won 2 out of those 5 AFCONS or have been to the final every season.

You're right but it is all of Africa. I do have a ranking of World Cup performances since 2002 based on how far teams progress. The problem you have in Africa is that the top teams didn't evolve after the 1990s but the rest of Africa caught up to them. There's no tactical evolution. Best we have is Morocco and Algeria making it their Strategy to pursue binationals (Egypt FA recently announced that they'll do the same KEK)

You didn't make any arguments. You just having a hard time reconciling in your brain that Egypt is strong in Africa but has zero mentions in world discourse outside Salah. You don't even get a shout-out from Confed cup 2009 coz you choked to USA. Get over it. You're just trying to acquire (you)s. Ranting about casuals and disingenuously saying only winning matters are not intellectual takes. Your claim on rigging is also just that.

Very true. At the same time south america had clearly progressed since the 90s. Especially Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador.
the level of play in AFCON is abysmal. Good coaching would certainly help but they need to evolve tactically just as Japan has in the last ten years. Japan used to be terrible.
