>>150106257 (OP)Weird answer, but: When I was 8 or so, my grandpa showed me old footage of Uwe Seeler. He played from the mid-50s to the early 70s and is one of the greatest German players ever, also acknowledged as a people's hero. Despite the shitty video quality and the fact that the game was slower back then, I was mesmerized by his play. He was short and stubby, but ridiculously quick and could jump like a flea. His shot power was immense, and he could score from basically any position. And he had a very high workrate, could also provide smart assists.
I saw him jump and shoot and sprint, and I just went "woah". Pretty sure I answered "Uwe Seeler" when other kids asked me for my favorite player in elementary school. Must have been weird, but I really didn't think about how strange it was. I just liked him a lot, and that was before actually learning about his life. Back then, I didn't even fully know he's the biggest legend of my favorite club
When it comes to contemporary players ... probably Ivica Olic or Mladen Petric, I really liked them when I was a kid. Favorite players were tied to HSV, my favorite club. I quickly ended up with no real favorite players though, because there always was a lot of change (usually for the worse) at the club
The first non-HSV player that comes to my mind is Buffon. I remember my dad buying me a fake version of his golden shirt when we were on vacation in Italy
