So cool, like Kurt Cobain if he was a footballer until I realized he was about as good as Pulisic

Cantona for me. Didn’t even support them, he was just too cool, and always seemed to win big games himself.
Back in the day you had to rely on eye test and snatches of footage, you didn’t have all the youtube and stats available. So my opinion was probably based on a few match of the day clips and the 94 and 96 fa cup finals

I remember a holiday in Turkey as a kid. I was wearing my Kaka jersey and the moment we turned the corner some restaurant owner pointed at me and shouted
>Kaka! Kaka!
When I turned around to reveal it was actually a Kaka jersey they cheered and gave me a high five
Must have been 9 years old or so. Good memory

Leonardo, immensely skilled technically but often injured, scored in some of the most important matches in the 98-99 season where Milan won the scudetto by only 1 point over Lazio

I loved Kaka's playstyle, it's always been something I was drawn to and naturally gravitated to even, if I didn't see him. The technicality, the physicality, speed, dribbling into space, the flair which he turned on when he felt like it (especially the flicks), great passing and shooting. Like if you asked me to create the perfect attacking midfielder the answer would be very similar to Kaka.

The first time I came across him was when I was a kid, I was excited to watch my first brazil game (it was hype back then) and I wanted to see Dinho, I had a braca Ronaldino jersey. I new Dinho wore number 10 but, he wasn't playing that match so, kaka was wearing number 10. I went "who is this guy? he isn't Ronaldinho?" then I saw him play. On a sidenote when I looked up clips of Kaka on yt they were all reversed so for a while I thought he was left footed and wore number 55

Weird answer, but: When I was 8 or so, my grandpa showed me old footage of Uwe Seeler. He played from the mid-50s to the early 70s and is one of the greatest German players ever, also acknowledged as a people's hero. Despite the shitty video quality and the fact that the game was slower back then, I was mesmerized by his play. He was short and stubby, but ridiculously quick and could jump like a flea. His shot power was immense, and he could score from basically any position. And he had a very high workrate, could also provide smart assists.
I saw him jump and shoot and sprint, and I just went "woah". Pretty sure I answered "Uwe Seeler" when other kids asked me for my favorite player in elementary school. Must have been weird, but I really didn't think about how strange it was. I just liked him a lot, and that was before actually learning about his life. Back then, I didn't even fully know he's the biggest legend of my favorite club
When it comes to contemporary players ... probably Ivica Olic or Mladen Petric, I really liked them when I was a kid. Favorite players were tied to HSV, my favorite club. I quickly ended up with no real favorite players though, because there always was a lot of change (usually for the worse) at the club
The first non-HSV player that comes to my mind is Buffon. I remember my dad buying me a fake version of his golden shirt when we were on vacation in Italy

Thanks for reading my blog

I watched football because of him. I didn't see that "well done he's 12" video until much later at which point I realised he's a total oddball.
