I've been watching a little NHL lately because I have access to all the games through ESPN+. It's really growing on me. I don't understand some of the rules/penalties that are called like I do NFL. How long will it take me to really grasp the nuances of the game? Also, I'm in Houston, so no team, so not sure how I emotionally invest in a team to be a fan of.

There's this not so official concept of "game management" in the NHL, where refs try to keep penalties between teams fairly even and will usually not be as strict on the team that's losing. You should be able catch onto this theme after about a dozen or so games.
