I'm sorry to inform you that following sumo is exactly the same experience as following any other sport. If you fundamentally don't like the idea of being a sports fan, then you're not going to be a sumo fan. Due to sumo's obscurity outside Japan (and its unpopularity inside Japan), you'd be better off trying to cultivate an interest in a more mainstream combat sport, just to see if you really do have what it takes to be a sports fan.

That's mostly due to them wanting to compete in MMA or whatever when they've already had to retire from the sport due to not being at their peak anymore in their mid 30s or 40s.

I think Sentoryu Henri did okay in MMA given his debut was at 35 years old. Baruto as well only had a few fights in one PRIDE tournament but went 3-1 with his only loss being against cro cop so there's no shame in that.
