When it comes to magic items, what are your favorite existing ones? To say nothing of those you’ve made yourself, and how magic items in general work and are created in your worlds. I personally have a fondness for magic staffs like the Hither-Thither staff, and like the idea that creating items drains the maker’s energy, preventing mass-production. If you have any good art of magic items you can share that’s great as well.

I liked the Dress of Protection from AD&D, it was described as a little black dress that provided an AC bonus between the levels of breastplate and fullplate, depending on the enchantment on the dress. The downside being it was vulnerable to slashing damage, where every slashing attack would weaken the dress and eventually would rip the dress off of the wearer.

This one is a personal favorite from a campaign 4 or 5 years back. Unfortunately, it got stolen to make a phylactery

While I was in the shower yesterday an idea came to me. The idea was a magic item which is a glove or gauntlet or rather a pair of them capable of holding on to any item or surface indefinitely. Quite exciting, isn't it? Whatever ludicrous acts of tomfoolery the players will come up with that magical artefact, will they not?

The 2014 bronze horn of Valhalla could summon 4d4+4 berserkers once every 7 days if you have proficiency with medium armor, granting you anywhere from 8-16 cr 2 67hp allies. As for the phylactery element, that was done for 3 reasons.

This is more of a head canon but, I looked at it as the horn being very conductive to channeling spirits, and the old enemy who stole it wanted to use it specifically for that reason, and because it was very important to my character, his former thrall

This is one that inspired an entire series of items in my world, a saint of the god of combat was immortalized by using his bones to make weapons. Even the tiny bones in his ears, which were fit into rings.

Requesting "modern" magic items. I'm running a modern fantasy game where magic is slowly returning after being dead for centuries, like PCs who have magic don't actually know it's magic and kinda just assume they're really lucky until things start getting weird. Whether it's a magic item that's more mundane or one that'll show up later in the game when more magic is returning, I would love to see what you guys have! A couple, like the armors and the vats were logical interpolations from those or from dark elf culture or whatever. Didn't do well in theaters, which is a shame because it's a perfectly good movie. Like not groundbreaking or anything, but not every movie needs to be Gone with the Wind.

It's full of little in-jokes for D&D fans, some of them surprisingly subtle. For example...

There's a bit where they have to talk to a bunch of corpses via a magic amulet in order to find the location of a magic artifact. They can ask five questions from each corpse, then the corpse dies again and can never be asked anything else. So obviously this leads to a comedy of errors ("wait, does that count as a question?" "Yes"), but aside from that, you also get it so that the corpses initially speak with these very high, dry voices and accents and stuff, but by the time you get to the last corpse he's basically speaking like a normal person...almost as if the DM started out doing voices and accents, but then got sick of it/it was hurting his throat/forgot what he was doing, so he started talking normally

They released the movie with little fanfare a week after John Wick 4 and a week before the Super Mario Movie, and then released it to streaming within 2 weeks of it's initial release.

It's a perfectly fun movie, and I'd say does encompass the spirit of the game (or the players). It really does feel like a game of DnD (complete with a DMPC Paladin who the table revolts over.)

I'm partial to lowly-enchanted items that make things more convenient. Like imagine a magic matchlock firearm that replaces the match with a permanently-hot magic stone, or something like that. Things that seem small but in actual fact can be quite powerful in certain circumstances.

In "my setting" magic items take a skilled mage, often one specialized in creating such items but not necessarily, some time to create; basically, the more powerful the item's enchantment, the more skilled/powerful the mage, and the more involved and lengthy the process. It's effectively diminishing returns, making low-level enchanted items semi-common and the most powerful ones extremely rare and sought-after.
