Tuomas Edition

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

>How do I get started?
All the files are free online, but are split between the website and the discord. They have all been collected here for your convenience:

I'm actually surprised no one takes binocs, since melee infiltrators seems to be quite common (HL NRP troopers/annointed, tIS assassins, NA trench moles/Prussian shocktroopers/Abyssinia flankers and C7HS hunter).

It can be, but you can also create fireteams to effectively have a big guy divided in 2 smaller guys. Heavy flamer HMI and MG HMI fireteam is quite busted in my experience.

>I want to spam smgs because they are cool looking
They are, you can go for Prussia if you like NA (higher SMG limit), although that subfaction is more geared towards grenades.

No discernable "heavy hitter" is their drawback. Thats offset by the sheer amount of ranged firepower they have.

I disagree with this, in that it is a drawback.
They have no designated 'big guy' who carries the faction on it's back because everything else is so good.

Some strengths are in that they get so many of a strong unit. HL may not have a heavy hitter, but it can have 5 annointed, which have the same profile as HMI except they also have +1 melee.

Sultantate has the same sort of thing with Jannisaries, they get 6, and that unit has a built in counter charge effect. It is possible to build around only having elites like these in HL and IS. BG amalgam is actually kindof shitty, their biggest boon is how many knights they get, paired with undead and fear they are actually really hard to kill even though they have a fairly average profile. The Dirge variant can fill all elite slots with its starting warband by just taking plague knights and corpse guard, which is pretty nutty as it means they can start gaining XP as soon as possible.

NA is good because it gets so many good weapons and they dont cost glory, so even slapping an MG on a regular yeoman isnt actually a terrible idea if you have the money for it, even if that unit dies its not a glory item so is easy to replace. By late game they are fielding MGs, grenade launchers and snipers all over the place like its nothing where every unit is equipped with grenades and med packs because they are saving so much money on replacing units and weapons.

I play naval raiders with 7 troops armed with submachine guns. I call it the โ€œswarm of beesโ€ strategy because I can stack on a stupid number of blood markers in a turn.

The key isnโ€™t to kill anything too tough, itโ€™s to stack on blood markers to make your opponentโ€™s elite models completely impotent with blood markers. And with the sheer number of shots youโ€™ll be taking, youโ€™re bound to get lucky sooner or later.

I recommend running them with trench shields to help them survive the retaliation.

Most factions have access to normal shotguns, the difference is in the special ones:

New Antioch allows you to bring shotguns, automatic shotguns (assauly weapons that allow you to shoot and charge) and heavy shotguns (big damage)

Alternatively the Trench Pilgrims lose the automatic shotgun but gain the punt gun (even bigger heavy shotgun with potential area damage)

Both factions are however limited in the number of special shotguns (limit of 2 for all 3 kinds).

The Heretic Legion does not have either the heavy shotgun nor the punt gun but have unlimited access to the automatic one.

New Antioch and Heretic Legion have both Shotguns and Automatic Shogtuns, and New Antioch has the Heavy Shotgun. Black Grail has normal Shotgun but also the Putrid Shotgun. Trench Pilgrims have normal Shotgun and the Punt Giant, which is just a beeg shotfun. All Shotguns have the Shield Combo so you can use them with a shield, and the basic Shotgun and Automatic Shotguns also have Bayonet Lugs on them as well. It varies how much of each they can take. Trench Knives are only 1 ducat and I think every faction has them. They're the dagger equivalent.

Automatic shotguns basically being Auto Fives I take it. Are the shields like the ones you'd stick on the end of the gun, almost like a portable version of a pintle mount shield, or are they riot shields with a notch to rest the gun? It gains Assault keyword, which allows you to fire it and charge into combat during the same activation.

Yes, the Trench Shield is basically that. It can look like a group of boards if you're so inclined, or your more riot squad shield. You've also got the Heavy Ballistic Shield which is restricted to Machine Armour users of New Antioch, which are your giant goddamn slabs of holy metal.

But you can put trench shields on brazen bulls. They can take any armor and equipment from the armory. Shields are armor from the armory. The restriction on things needing the Heavy keyword only applies to weapons. Shields aren't weapons. And since the bull-only ranged weapons are both 1-handed, you can have zulfiqar, murad/flamecannon, and a trench shield together without sacrificing anything. It's just expensive.

If we still maintained dirigibles I could see the wilder sects of modern Christianity, the snake-fondlers and protesters, do something like this. Get high into the clouds and pray into them with a loudspeaker so the rain they makes will "bless" the enemy it falls on and convert them to Christ. Truly only the most black-hearted and thus deserving of death could resist such an awesome proclamation of faith.

Rough prototype fit for a heretic bunker made from the packing inserts from a small slowcooker, a plastic cookie tin and a hardback paper insert from some random peripheral gear box
The idea is to PVA glue the cookie tin to the lower insert, then add some supports between the lower and upper inserts to make it look like a concrete bunker while still being able to lift up the upper insert able to place or remove minis.
After i figure out a way to solve that it will get heretic greebling and a proper paintjob.

It's just a really poorly thought out setting. It's really amateurish. Point of divergence is way too early. They should have the gates to hell opening in the 1800s or something for the WW1 setting. Hell, make it the 1600s with a witch hunt or something if you want that spoopy occult originating event.

Literally all, and I mean all, of the interest about Trench Crusade is because of under 10 artworks from it. Like the original artist is not just the MVP, he is in fact the only player in this project.

Eventually the hellknight got to melee range to contest the middle objective. Unfortunately it was not enough, it found himself inbetween a liutenant + heavy shotgun HMI and a lion of jabir + assasin without support since the hunter was occupied holding the entire flank by himself, the sorcerer fucking died to a sniper+MG sniper priest fireteam and the praetor could only support from afar.

I have to say absolute tank of a unit, it took them building 7 blood markers to finally take it down.

Grail's stick depends very much on what sin they choose, though they all want to juggle blood markers to fuel their spells.

Heretics love their combined arms with priest/chorister support, arty witch long range fire, warwolf/death commando melee monsters plus, troopers and annointed bulking out the list

You're confusing Grail with Court, Grail is the plague undead faction, Court is the demon one.

>>95801045
Admittedly I do not have all that much experience fighting Grail yet but they're a melee focused faction of very tough to beat guys, 90% of their roster gets a -1Dice to all non-fire injury rolls. Flames are very effective though so you can go for that route, also expect gas weapons. They completely lack long range.

Other than that they're similar to the Court in the sense that their elites are exponentially better than their rank-and-file which are there to support and be annoying.

Grail has several tarpit units which aren't that scary by themselves but with swarms of them thanks to their swarm rules, they can annihilate you. There are also a couple of units like the lord of tumors that can consistently kill anything in melee but don't have any real ranged to speak of. Grail is going to move slow across the board and if you haven't wiped them out before they arrive, you lose. They're immune to gas and tanky against all non-fire damage. Alchemists will shine as a result.

>>95801069
You are confused. Grail is always gluttony and they don't get to choose, and they don't have spells. That's court.

As far as I understand, the reason why we didn't get the book sooner is because they wanted more time to test the changes and new stuff they want to introduce with the book. They were very adamant about no wanting to print the book before everything had been ironed out and tested. Same thing with the Hunger being delayed.

There's only ever been 12 of them, 2 are dead and 1 has turned traitor, their equipment is irreplaceable, and they can't make any more of them. Given that they are also the only ones who can actually walk in and out of hell itself, they are for very, very important operations only. The lore primer (Page 18) mentions them being used to kill hell's nobles, destroy virus labs of the black grail, or interrogating literal demons for information. Highest level shit that no one else is capable of doing, let alone surviving.

It's a pipe dream, but I'm hoping for some proper nautical autism in either the lore, or the fancanon material.
Shit like.
>The Mediterranean fleet has mega-galleys and 'wet' warships because minimal profile and lack of bad seas.
>The Moving Fortress of Brittania is actually relatively poorly optimized as it's been built and refitted and retrofitted so many times over its hundreds of years of construction. It's just, despite this, still so well engineered and crewed that it's still faster, hardier, shoots further, and hits harder and more accurately than Heretic Leviathan ships.
>Isambard Brunel is a saint of Shipbuilding Engineering
>Most ships are in HMS Rodney/Hood-grade disrepair due to constant service, demands, and lack of time or resources for dockyard overhaul. Men are turning boilers on and off as the ship still runs, and sticking men inside active engines to fix them.
>The highest echelons of Captains are drawn from the ranks of the Elite Destroyer flotilla.
>Larger vessels of war are so valuable that, despite so much religious purity/corruption, both sides will attempt to capture and 're-christen' enemy vessels.

Each circle of hell requires it's own special suit, but that doesn't mean each special suit was specifically designed to correspond to a circle of hell. I imagine a few were probably designed for earthly combat, maybe even for heavenly or space combat.

Apparently some guys have gotten the green light from Toumas to make a Trench Crusade RPG.
Here's a quick copypaste from the discord thread on character creation:

>Archetypes define your Crusaderโ€™s role on and off the battlefield. Each offers a distinct approach to combat, faith, tactics, and survival. Your Archetype provides key abilities, suggested talents, and narrative cues that shape your playstyle

>Below are the list of Initiate (Tier 1 gameplay) archetypes for players to play. I have art for each if you all would like to see.
>Disclaimer: This is in draft and subject to change, please feel free to provide feedback.

>Trench Pilgrim
>Wandering zealots and trench warriors guided by visions and desperation.

>Observer
>Snipers, scouts, and battlefield visionaries attuned to the past, present, and future.

>Janissary
>Brutal frontline enforcers clad in alchemical steel and unwavering loyalty.

>Chorister
>Penitent hymn-warriors and conduits for divine harmonics.

>Warden of Dust
>Lorekeepers and exorcists who wield fire, scripture, and relentless memory.

>Shrine Anchorite
>Wandering battlefield healers who bind wounds with faith and resolve.

>Relic Scavenger
>Improvised fighters scavenging sanctity from the shattered earth.

>Prophet-Guard
>Chosen protectors of the Orders, bearing faith like a shield.

To be hones the easiest way to run a TC RPG would be to just refluff Only War or Dark Heresy 2 depending on what power level/style of play you want. Remove the high-tech stuff and refluff psychic powers to be piety-based powers and you got a good base to build out from.

its not so much that each suit was hand crafted for one realm specifically as much as each paladin proved HIGHLY effective at killing certain realm so their armor was crafted to aid in their goal to kill their way through that realm
for example the paladin in charge of killing the circle of pride wears a very plain, form fitting armor that has no room for commendations, or customizations or even anything that makes her stand out so Pride has no way to tempt her, or feed her ego to give him leverage
similarly i think the other paladins who were lost had similar roles who later fell in battle against foes they were ill prepared for but had to face regardless
like the paladin who died killing the second grail hedgemon on earth
as for the traitor its clearly a Judas parallel so my guess would be where traitors ended up in hell

Anon is either attempting to stir shit or has laser focused so hard on the idea that someone's making Trench Crusade TRPG that he ignored every bit of information around it. In our 10 players community I think only one know something about the lore, but anyway you can just tell other people it's "40k during ww1" and they will understand.
Imo the biggest problem is how boring the art is, it's just the "industry standard" artstation type of art, for a kickstarter old school game I wanted some cool art and artists.... not diablo 3 with guns

Only way Ive ever seen someone get a game going that isnt Warhammer is if they have armies for other people to just try out. The game needs sub 10 models to play a game, its worth considering if you want to put together 2 factions.

Also there is no actual definitive rules yet, its not much of a surprise its a struggle to get people to play what is effectively still the beta version of the game.

This company is HARD fucked. Kickstarters that explode too much end up costing the company more than they make and this company is already doing all the hallmarks of inexperienced game/Kickstarter companies, is spending spending spending before fulfilling it (see shit like immediately announcing they hired one of the most expensive game designers, hiring multiple 'lore authors.'
Yeah.... This does not bode well

What do you mean it doesnt bode well, what is the expected action after success, for them to take the money they made and just sit on it?

Even if they put out today that they are not working on anything anymore and have no money, the game exists and is playable, them not reaching higher does not mean the thing didnt already succeed by the mere fact that there is already a working game.

If its still not hardened try and flatten it out some and make it less lumpy looking. If you want to make a cloak roll out a flat little sheet and just wrap it around the model, its easy to cut off the bits you dont need with a scalpel when its dried.

Is the guy with the barbed wire going to be covered in gore or something? It looks like its going into him. Its a neat idea if so.

Does it seem valid to just have the war prophet hang behind a wall of fighters to heal them? That healing effect seems really good but if theyre stuck in combat they are probably going to be using it more on themselves than anyone else. Like Ive thought of outfitting the WP for support rather than offence and giving more spending to other units.

In my experience the War Prophet's heal is a nice bit in incidental value, but being reliant on it is going to bite you in the ass because it's an action with no extra dice. You don't necessarily need to make yours a frontline fighter, but you're wasting that +2 ranged if you don't give yours the nicest gun you can afford, ideally with incendiary ammo to make your local Grail player sad.

Am I mistaken in that you can take this action seperate from a combat action? As in, I can do the heal, if it succeds then I can take a shot, where if I fail then I end the turn and dont get either action? I intended to give them a blessed icon so they dont just end their turn if they fail at least.

The wrath ability on cavalcade seems powerful if you can do this. You effectively dont even need a melee weapon, just use this while a wall of units is infront of them blocking, or if they are in melee then they effectively have 2 attacks on their turn, one from the ability and the other from their actual attack.

>you can take this action seperate from a combat action?
Correct. You only end your turn for failing a Risky action though, and the Laying on Hands isn't Risky. You might be thinking of medi-kits that are Risky. What I was implying is that hitting a 7 on a 2d6 isn't an assured thing and it's possible you can go multiple rounds with out the healing triggering, so I wouldn't rely on it and base your War Prophet's actions entirely on being a heal bitch, especially since it has a great combat profile and Loudspeakers lets it make some really aggressive melee maneuvers.

Oh thats even better than I thought then. Could use the loudspeakers to make sure they are able to get in and make contact with the enemies before they are able to tie up the formation or get to the prophet. Kindof like how you would do in MESBG, where you would use lesser units to body block and allow heroes to move more freely to do whats needed and not get bogged down by shitters and then have a hero killer join in fight.

The unit seems to be the factions best shooter so Id like to keep them from getting tied in melee it seems, so they can do more shooting and move freely to do the heal where needed.

I got this mini and it gave me an idea for a counts-as Chorister for my Heretic Legion: a dullahan-esque woman who committed suicide by blowing her head off with a grenade instead of cutting her throat. After becoming a chorister her head now appears ghostly and translucent, similar to the trench ghost banshees but her body is still there, still bleeding from the severed neck.

The face and hair would be painted similar to this but blue instead of green

I wanted to make some Dirge plague knights, which models do you reckon I should go with. Wanted to go with a "knights of lazarus" theme where they just look like regular knights but are bleeding out of the gaps in the armour, but I feel like the guys on the right look more appropriate to the faction. What do you think?

I'd say the paint will be what will sell the concept of "bleeding from the edges of your armor for months". Get that brown-red trail of grime leaking downwards like a broken pipe and it'll make whichever model you choose.

Left if you're going with regular knights. Right could still be used as a Chorister and an Annoited for HL though, especially since that Stormcast helm has that rim which will fit nicely in a model's hand.

New antiochs papal states variant. They start with a bunch of glory points which allows them to use mercenaries, which is a lot of what you have, the anti tank communicants, the ammo monk and that judge guy are perfect, now all you need to do is buy a sprue of bolt action winter germans and a new atlanitc ww1 british sprue and make chaff units and youre done.

Compendium guy here, finally done with a lot of the api/accounts stuff and properly cracking on the warband. Luckily all my setup means this shouldn't take too long.

As an example of stuff, you can see that I've made a HOW warband and added one alchemist and one homunculus. When I go to add another infantry (non elite, non mercenary) I have no option to add a second homunculus. If I added a second alchemist then I would be able to add them again.

This sort of flexible-functionality is why I bothered to remake this all.

I think its because, as >>95874079 said, theres a lot of smaller factions and splitting due to hell politics, and the authors dont want to commit to naming all of the heretic nations now which would limit their available story-space. Compared to the faithful which are for the most part just real nations.

yeah i get that i do have a spare copy of the knight on the right which i might try a different colour scheme, maybe instead of flat red i could do dark metal with a red wash and also dull the brass using a dirt wash thing is i do have one small problem which ill touch on at the end of this post.
>>95891743
>removing ornamentation
so apart from the sorcerer who has quite a bit of it(which i do like, though i might cut off the braid coming off the staff) i dont see much on the knights, though maybe im just blind
>adding dirt to the edges to simulate wear n tear
so this is another nice idea, might do it for my knights as they are foot sloggers, maybe also around the feet and on the lower legs/ankle
was also considering having blood on their weapons, shields and maybe pauldorns too.

With that said, i do have a big problem with these plans and that is the fact that i don't like to "dirty" my models, i like clean schemes and my armies/ collections to look uniform. However i do understand that as this is a low model count skirmish team and of the setting itself that it would make much more sense to make my models as gritty as possible. Not liking the idea but might still try on my next day off.

Btw quick question, for mercenaries in the army would it be better for them to fit in colour scheme wise with my team or to have their own schemes to fit the idea that they are mercenaries?

Also thank you for the advice

Decided to go full Banshee on my chorister instead of just a severed head. Both because it was easier than carving away the head and in case I want to run Trench Ghosts in the future.
The lore reason for having a banshee my naval raiding party is that the banshee was the heretic priest's wife and he made a deal with a patron devil after she died for her soul to be bound to his for the rest of his mortal life.

Still have a few details to tweak on the mini but kinda dig it so far.

Then you'll have to go hard in the opposite direction. Gilded, over-ostentatious, loud. Motherfuckers who have bought their wealth with the sweat of other's brows and spent it on themselves. Might obligate you to spend Ducats on their upgrades though to match what they're wearing.
