If you can't get into theater of the mind, board games may be more your speed.

I like painting minis and then going on pretend adventures with them while I sit on the living room floor :)

Depends on the ruleset. Some games really lean into minis on grids. Savage Worlds is a notable example. You can go theater of the mind and it works fine, however, it is built on a skirmish game's skeleton so it shines much brighter with mini setup.

Hex for overland, squares for smaller areas by the way. Also, you should be able to see what's in every adjacent hex in a hexcrawl, it speeds the game up dramatically and encourages player exploration more.

If the game doesn't have crunchy tactical combat, then I need some character drama to not feel bored and my playgroup doesn't really explore relations between PCs.
And if the game does use crunchy combat, having a map and miniatures/tokens is a must. They can be abstract or made with quick doodles, but they must be there.

Theater of the mind is fine, but sometimes it's fun to play crunchier games where the distance between objects and the established range for actions is more firm. To each their own, though I think people should not outright reject either on the face of being different than what they are already used to.

Because we harness the full potential of the imagination rather than leaning on idols

Warhammer Fantasy's combat just doesn't work without a grid and tokens/minis. The system encourages you to disengage from enemies just to charge back in from a different angle (dodging other enemies) while other PCs try to keep them pinned down. Furthermore the range of AoE attacks is also important.
Theater of the mind only works with 1v1s.

I use maps so players know where they are in relation to eachother. No need to get really advanced. Simple tokens, Some stock images for enemies, and something I made in a few hours work fine for what I go for. The real immersion lies in music anyway
