>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings, Deadzone, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, Judge Dredd, HeroClix, Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone, Oathmark, OnePageRules, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, Stargrave, Sludge, Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenotactics...

...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

>Examples of companies providing rules for alternative wargames.
Atomic Mass Games, Black Site Studios, CMON, Mantic, OnePageRules,
Osprey, Para Bellum, TTCombat, Wargames Atlantic, Warlord Games...
...and many other publishers.

>Places to get minis; Updates to the minis list are welcome.

Late pledge has opened for Zeo Genesis.

Why, why, why can't they write a clear description for any of the products they are selling? Which sets and add-ons are included in the bundles? What expansions are available for each faction and when will they ship? Are you deliberately trying to confuse your customers?

I forgot about this, thanks for the heads up, always down to try new Andy Chambers rules iterations.
Definitely not going to back it, because the art direction and mechanical design is not for me, as are the naming conventions. Love what the company is doing otherwise.
As far as gamefound goes, have you tried clicking through the tiny tabs at the top of the page? All the info you seek is there. Modern web design is truly ass.

>What is the cheapest source for orc and goblin miniatures?
>orc
eM4, hands-down. They're 1990s monoposes but they're cheap as all fuck and they come in bags of fifty.
https://em4miniatures.com/en-us/products/orc-with-bow-x-50
https://em4miniatures.com/en-us/products/orc-with-spear-x-50
https://em4miniatures.com/en-us/products/orc-with-sword-x-50
They also do individuals for 40¢ and bags of mixed minis in smaller quantities.
Warlord's Orcs are just the old Wargames Factory ones. Have the same melty detail, awkward poses, taco hands, and mold quality issues as their Romans. Work better as Tolkien goblins or low-orcs, not Uruk-hai.
Goblins depend heavily on what you want. That said, WGA and North Star both have cheap Tolkien-ish plastics.

If you want GW-style gobbos and orcs your best bet is either Mantic, or knockoff Blood Bowl teams.

For good or ill, GW's got a very unique style going on with their Orks and *especially* goblins. Nobody but EM4 and Mantic has been willing to slap nuts onto the table and make plastics for it. So it's kinda either that, 3DPPD, or the magical world of £7 metals. The EM4 guys are more Oldhammer orky, Mantic is.. Mantic.
Unless I'm missing some huge elephant in the room anyway, I'm basing this on research I did for a buddy's army last year.

Downside is you then need a least a basic mill too, even if you are sending out molds for machining or going with limited use 3dp molds, you will still need to be able to square metal surfaces and adjust feed/flow/ejection pins. And a small garage that can be clean room partitioned.
It's a pretty serious hobby unless you are already a machinist.
Learning CAD (fusion 360 is free for non commercial) is a good start.
Buying a resin printer and learning some basic 3d software is an option that doesn't require nearly as much infrastructure or expense.

Damn, good luck. I know the guys over at Iron Wind have a lot of expertise and they like to share know-how. They had a tutorial on getting set up with a caster ages and ages ago, back when they were Ral Partha. We ran a quick game of Grimdark Firefight yesterday evening after work.
Very simple stuff, every unit except the leaders were Q4 D5 with an A1 normal rifle, but with the Advanced Actions special rule.
We played a scenario encounter, with 2 players against a GM and a simple objective (grab the 5 objective markers and don't lose more than 5 dudes in the process).
It was a load of fun, especially finally getting to use these terrains I have been building since forever.
However, I found the lack of reaction rules (beyond the "Overwatch" action) a bit jarring.
It feels like shooting back when being shot at, or being able to interrupt the movement of a unit if it passes through your line of sight should be closer to the default rather than something that costs a full action.
Is there a miniature-agnostic game which is a bit more built around reactions? From what I've seen, Blkout seems to fit the bill pretty well, if it didn't come with pre-built setting and units

>Would it be immoral to sculpt miniatures heavilly based on previously released sculpts from someone else when they are no longer available?
Fuck no. Hell, it's legal and frankly based to make models with a similar style to stuff that's out *right now*. We all like extra options. There's an entire cottage industry of knockoff Blood Bowl teams, almost every modular plastic or resin infantry company has GW lasguns and special weapon assortments as one of the standard options. Sometimes it's even the same people ripping off their own dead games, like all the unreleased Warzone things that got repurposed for Void 1.0, and before that they were *very* transparently making models for Warhammer in the Rogue Trader style after GW went all-in on the 2e/3e 40k redesigns. If it's not available anymore it's even more based to make your own, and anyone objecting is a joyless nogames faggot who probably jerks off on AI-upscaled pictures of their unopened blisters to avoid damaging the cardboard.
Now if you mean marketing half-assed conversions sculpted on top of someone else's minis or using direct scans of their shit, it's definitely illegal and kind of a dick move.

Checked. Coming from vidya I was really let down by my first game of 40k. No interruption, no opportunity attack, no flank bonus, couldn't use a model to block the stairs to protect my sniper nest as CCW kind of telepprt on a 6" high radius or some whatever bullshit...

Anyway: Inifinty if you want the deep dive into it and kind of a scene still kicking around or xenotactics if you want OPR accessibility but just you and the boys.
If you don't mind tweaking WW2 rulesets into SciFi then Crossfire, Fireball Forward amd Disposable Heroes are kind of unique with no shooting range and Initiative going back and forth between players the moment you can draw a line of sight on the active unit.

They have very erratic sculpt quality. Several of their ranges, including orcs, have a style that's sort of uncanny-valley GW and people can find it offputting.
On the business side of things, they dramatically overcharge for some of their models - mostly individuals and the licensed stuff - and they don't always make it very clear if something is hard plastic, resin with metal bits, or terrible PVC in their catalog. Plus their site is complete ass to navigate. None of this is a dealbreaker; you just have to make sure you know what you're getting.

Mantic goblins are some of the best *shrug*

When they apply what they have learned doing the more High Fantasy Kings of War factions to traditional fantasy factions like elves, dwarves, undead and regular orcs, they will clean up. When they offer a viable alternative to what is basically just North Star GW and sporadic Wargames Atlantic they will eat other manufacturers' breakfast

It's bad manners to self check your digits. I noticed them for (You) already.

I feel our Skirmish let-down issue might be a generational thing:
-If you're Boomer to Millenial then your first contact with wargaming was wargaming and you're happy with what has always been around.
-If you're Millenial to Alpha your first contact with wargaming was most certainly a Tactical RPG or RTS videogame, were the machine is doing the heavy load so there's a lot of crunch behind the scene that can't or shouldn't be reproduced on a table. So we're surprised there so much to remember but in the same time so few to do.

Gen-X here, there's a certain amount of overhead you can't just schwack in a game and expect it to run smoothly. Which means either clunky as fuck games (my teenaged tabletop conversion of X-Com, et. al), or sacrificing other stuff to get in the overhead. Infinity's a good example of the latter, where they cut the game down to three nominal turns and heavily abstract a bunch of other stuff to get the reaction gameplay and three-card monte shell games that define it.

It is good gamedesign to kill your sacred cows and abstract what can be, I feel you. But anon's point still stand: 40k is SciFi WW2 so recruiting whole squads and passing orders squad by squad make sense. But as far as I'm concerned I'm the highest ranking officer at the table and if I want all the squads in Building A to Charge I shouldn't have to concern myself with ordering sergeant by sergeant. Let me give a general local order and be done with it, if Unit Coherency is maintained along the Charge then no harm no fools.

I take a 40k as an example because it's the main game in the Industry and too many "big" /awg/ don't dare to venture too far from it. Crossfire is like decades old and remains kind of unique.
If you come from a Xcom background then Xenotactics is a really precious little thing and I'm glad it's one of the top recommandations here.

They use that old super-hard, glossy plastic for their castings. Same stuff people use for board game pawns. It tends to tear or shatter if you don't cut it with a saw, scrapes and sands fine. I only use etching primers on it, but I'm not sure if it matters. I've converted up a few of their Space Rangers but not the gangers.

Well you can deliver orders to multiple squads at once on a platoon or company level in real life or with a simple click and drag in videogame but it doesn't turn out into fleshblob vs fleshblob. Because a decent battle have multiple objectives, chokepoints and killboxes.

So you raise a good point on surface level but any battle report tells us it's a non-issue.

Open Beta. I'm pretty down on the 4e rules.

Most of the community did not feel like a new edition was needed or warranted, sure you could release one to sort of reset the clock and start fresh, but 3e wasn't stale at all.

Everyone kind of agreed they needed a major balance pass, especially targeting the Ten Thunders faction. And there were a lot of crews left by the wayside that needed to be updated so many years into the edition.

But 4e is a completely different game. Almost nothing about it has stayed the same from 3e. The core rules are radically different and the crews do not play similarly at all. They basically just went and made a brand new game.

So, it's hard to say whether it is an improvement or not because it is so different, but it's change a lot of people never wanted or asked for. I think there are a couple neat ideas, but honestly I feel pretty negative about almost every major change they've made.

The open beta has been a bit of a mess, too. It has felt more like an alpha than an open beta. They have radically redesigned crews multiple times in the middle of the beta. It's not just tweaking power levels and balance, tightening up language, but they went into the beta with fundamental aspects still being designed. The edition release is at Gencon and they still don't even have beta rules for about 10 masters+crews. Every week there have been a bunch of errors in the beta cards too with unintentional changes, completely different versions of the same abilities, glaring rules errors. I get that betas are supposed to catch that stuff, but they inject more every week then have to go back and fix the next week. It just feels unnecessary when 3e was almost perfect.

Fireforge has the best medieval plastics. Pic related. Their standard Peasant kit mixes and matches with it, too. There are enough extra bits in the box - each sprue of six models comes with 12 heads, plus arms and weapons for ~25 figures - that you can dress up several other more generic kits with them to make more zeds. Three sprues of six models each for $25.
Speaking of dress-up, WGA's zombies are generic as fuck (on purpose) and unarmed. No weapons, lots and lots of heads for different periods. They're dressed in a tattered tunic or t-shirt and torn shorts. Five sprues of six models, 70-odd heads per sprue and 18 arms, so again you can tart up about 15-20 other models with spare bits from the box.
Mantic's kit is.. okay. The problem isn't the sculpts or quality. It's that the box is a stack of 13 identical sprues with only three models each, and it's very hard to vary the poses or convert them. All of the models have one or both arms in fixed positions, two out of the three torsoes have extremely distinctive weapons, and there are only a couple of extra heads with no extra arms. One or two sprues for variety in a larger unit is fine. In big units they're miserable to paint and look extremely copy/paste. The Ghoul unit has much the same problem, with only two models per sprue and a single weapon/head variant on it.
The Frostgrave male Cultist kit only has bits for about 4-6 zombies and another handful of skeletons in the box of 20 models. Not recommended for Undead on its own, even if it's a great kit otherwise. The female box has bits for more like 15 per box of 20, but none of the zombie arms have weapons.

If you're looking for a good variety you'd probably be best-off grabbing one box of each of the Frostgrave Cultist kits and then one of the Fireforge peasants to kitbash, should get you about 50-60 zombies with enough bits to convert a few generic infantry from one of your buddy's armies to throw in the units as well.

I'm getting some miniatures ready for printing and playtesting a few mecha rulesets (Arsenal, Zeo Genesis, Bangarang). Thinking about downscaling the Arsenal minis to about 85% (roughly 32mm to 28mm).
Mainly based on the common skirmish game play area of 3'x3' and 75-80mm bases being HUGE. Seems like if I downscale I get more tactical movement with terrain just from moving a few plain bases around my table. 60mm based mecha just seems a lot more usable
Think this is a good idea? I don't want to go down the 15mm rabbit hole at the moment, and reverse scale creep makes me smile a bit too.

Those are 4"/100mm bases according to the guy that made that video. Arsenal recommends 75mm.
The rightmost mech in my post is scaled down to 85% on top of a 60mm base, and is the same model as the two grey ones in your screengrab. The center is the the original scale on top of an 80 and is almost hanging 5.
I think I am just going to have to waste the resin and print a few different scales to see what looks best on the table.
Definitely scaling the infantry down to 28mm, 35mm is just too big.

I have used variations on the old Spiky rat pack pale skin tutorial for a long time.
https://spikyratpack.blogspot.com/2014/02/pale-skin-tutorial.html
It seems like a lot of steps, but just reading through the process is pretty enlightening.
Gardens of Hecate has a good one for more a more dried up exhumed from the soil type undead that I thought was pretty cool. Using agrellan earth and typhus corrosion for textures, though I wasn't able to replicate it well.

>How are the Forge Fathers? A friend of mine digs them quite a bit.

Infantry:
Militia: Older models, they go together very easily, with few parts, but the down-side is that there are few parts and half of them will be 2 parts and look pretty much identical.

Steel Warriors: (and variants) these have good detail, and go together well enough, except for the waist. The torso and legs don't mate nicely without a little work.

Forge Guard: Arguably the best of the range, they're simple to put together, but completely monopose. Certain legs are keyed to certtain torsos, and the the joint between the arms and the shoulders feels insubstantial, but shouldn't be a problem.

Hammerfist Drop Squad: I haven't assembled mine yet, but the metal weapons look like a lot of weight for the shoulder joints. We'll see, I guess.

Brokkrs: Mine are "Restic", which is basically a worse version of PVC. I think they're case in proper resin now, but don't quote me on that.

Valkyr Bikers: No idea, never had any.

Iron Ancestors: I've got the regular one, also "Restic". Simple assembly, goes together easily enough. Mine doesn't stand flat on the base, but I'm unsure if that's a design/manufacturing defect or if the leg is distorted so slightly that I can't eyeball it. YMMV. (nothing that pinning and stuffing basing material under the foot won't fix)

Tanks: A-tier kit. The only things holding them back are the dozer blade ataching in a slightly awkward way (no socketing, it just glues to a concave curve on the front. I magnetized mine) and some turrets are heavy enough to tip out of the socket while the model is on a flat surface. You could glue the turret, but the kit is made in such a way that you can switch between APC and AFV/MBT and the optional parts at the rear will attach with only a pressure fit, so you probably want to keep your options open.

Jotun: Mine's "Restic" and took some work to put together due to alignment issues. Have hot water to hand and get everything to dry fit before gluing.

Hultr: Mostly a big chunk of resin. I don't know why the front part had to be so many small pieces, but they did go together easily enough, so I'm not complaining.

It says plastic + resin on the website, so maybe they changed the metal weapons to resin?

Still "plastic" it seems.

I like their walkers and pic related gun plattform, but overall i dont like Dwarfs enough to justify buying into an army of space dwarfs.

Both sound very good. I’ve had success with technical paints for bases before. I got a great crackling effect but I had to apply it over pva glue. I doubt I could do that over an actual model though without messing up the details. I’ll try to find the video where they explained some different techniques to get the most out of technical paints. At least the corrosion wash might work, I’ll do some experimenting.

Zombie skin is fun because you can go really wild with skin-tones, can even do colors like orange-yellow, green, blue, etc. mixes. And lazy washing also helps too, since it actually will make them look gaunt.

More work as I then have to source thematically appropriate 15mm SF infantry, and then likely convert them too. As downscaling 35mm minis to 15mm is a no go for gaming pieces. Nowhere was painting mentioned in my several posts about finding a sweet spot for scaling miniatures for combined arms mecha games.

I would posit that there is more choice in 15mm for sci fi than 28mm. 28mm is suprisingly light on when you exclude 40k (and I do).

Painting 15mm however is a weird one. It can actually be more work to paint the smaller scales if you do much more than block paint and a wash.

I know you're WiP so you're still workin' on it, but normally the cut areas on a palisade are much lighter than the outsides of the logs, even after they're barked. Inking the skewers makes the cut parts a lot *darker*, and sometimes people miss it on the cleanup. Other than that, lookin' great. I love me some beatup salvaged duckboards.

>>95878845
>Lads, what kinds of monsters do you prefer?
Commies
More seriously, it's a mix of stuff. Terrible 1890s dinosaur reconstructions, prehistoric beasts in general, Harryhausen critters, regular animals, Bob Olley trolls, Japanese yokai, beastmen, and absolute shit-tons of undead that have sort of conglomerated into an army while I wasn't looking. I also like horse-trading for people's broken models and then converting them with spare bits; the model on the right in the pic is a damaged Reaper frost troll I got for a buck, with a vulture head, new hand, sculpted wattles, and some feathers laid in on the back. Did something similar to a partially-melted rubber werewolf to make a betentacled rat ogre.

Lets assume that we have monopose miniatures in a ranks and file tye of game, forming phalanx.
lets assume, they are not uniform, with ragtag sets of armor but matching type of weapons (all pikes)
This means that there are more than one sculpt, not em4 like horde of one mini repeated 50 times.
At which point the repetativness will be jarring to the eye?
What if we had different poses (pikes at different elevations), would three different variants per pose be enough ?

Honestly? I have been working on a palisade before. In your place I would make
>the raised part as separate
and
>longer wood sections on the walls.
By this I mean you have these bases you glue sticks to, one or two stick more on each side, going beyond the bases. Then, you can create a wider, connector segment into which you can insert walls. This lets your wall segments connect seamlessly at different angles (based on how you make your connectors)

Thats just a thing I would like to know when I started making palisades not critique or anything.

Still, hwg might know best about monopose miniatures in regimental blocks.
I would say as long as the front rank is individual sculpts, the back does not matter too much as long as not two clones are standing right next to each other. But even that could work of they are painted differently.
If clones (like 25x orc with spear from EM4), then the whole regiment should be made with the same pose. That also can look good in an abstract way I think.

Alright, here’s a simple house-rule which could add this in OPR without breaking it:
>All units which are grouped, can be activated and moved together
>Multiple units which are not grouped, can be moved together if they move to form a group
>Shooting is still done in alternating activation
I don’t see much obvious exploits that could stem from that.

Lion Rampant has group activation rules for movement, where you can order multiple units at a time, but the larger the group is, the more penalties you get to the activation roll. So it's -1 for three units, -2 for four and so on.

Nice. Maybe show us a closeup on thos ratmen. Is it converted skaven? Or mantics rats? Its hard to tell.

Right now i'm assembling a 2nd squad of 6 desert not-arab-guys, and while i like the Black Guard as base, their sprue layout is flawed.

There is only one way to build them, which is with spears. I guess thats fair, since its a historical unit of spearmen, but still. The banner and other command bits that are included are nice, but they "steal" a big amount of space from that sprue. Here it really becomes an issue that they do one sprue boxes only, so you end up with 4 flag bearers and 4 drummers between 24 figures if you would build all 8 of them.. which would be silly. But if you dont, you end up with almost 1/3 of the plastic of your kit being unused. 4 Sprues of Spearmen, and maybe a half sized sprue with command bits would have been a better solution. Especially considering they could have added that small command sprue into their 2nd arab infantry set as well. That one has bows and melee weapons, but no command bits at all. But maybe both kits are intended to be used together in the first place.
Enough blogposting.

The plastic is very good quality, very sharp (especially compared with earlier Fireforge stuff like the Templars or Russians), and they finally got rid of the stupid puddle bases for their miniatures.
Size-wise, they match Northstars Stargrave stuff pretty much 1 to 1, the arms with rifles fit to those bodies pretty much perfectly.

Oh, one thing i forgot to criticize: the heads are all sideways in this sprue, so they can have this nice looking band of cloth hanging from the back of them. But it also means there is mold line running down the middle of each head and face. Moldlines in general are not too bad in this set (again, a big upgrade from their previous stuff), but still.

I'm a big fireforge fan, so far the most crisp models I bought from them where the Byzantine infantrymen, really nice detail on their mail hauberks and scale cuirasses. I've thought of buying these fireforge Berbers, to me they look better than the islamic infantry that victrix made recently. But I haven't been able to justify it to myself, as I haven't figured out what kind of pseudo middle-eastern warband to fit them to.

Yeah those are nice conversions. One idea I had was to give them older jezzails etc. But I think Perry afghans are much more slender than fireforge models and WGA seems to have pulled their afghans from their store. There are STLs available of older islamic firearms, but getting them to the right size is a bitch and having dozens of Bedouins running around with firearms strapped to their backs while they wield swords or spears would look silly.

I really like Chosen men.

I wonder what you would call games with heroic characters of that "scale" where they are powerful enough to really increase the power multiplier of a force, and tend to be the last guy standing, but not so powerful as to defeat another unit of multiple grunts outright?

It makes people feel like main characters without making them feel like super heros. more that fate slightly favors them rather than LITERALLY being demi-gods. It hits that balance of believable but epic in a way thats really hard to get right.

I'm pretty new to the wargame hobby, but it seems like a LOT of games, perhaps the majority, use a system that's a variation on
>roll 1d6 for each model in the unit when attacking (some special units get multiple attacks per model, but one is the base standard)
>roll 1d6 per time attacker hit to soak/armor save
>every unsoaked/saved hit kills a model (again, special units get multiple "wounds", but one is the standard)
>in melee, both sides make all these rolls

Some games even add even more rolls for a single attack/soak exchange
>after determining number of hits, attacker rolls 1d6 for each hit to determine how many wounds are inflicted on target

It all seems a bit much. Are there any games with less rolls per attack/melee round? All these rolls are why these games take so long to play a battle.

Oathmark. D10s only. 5 dice max. Roll against a TN to see if you hit. hits = HP loss. Most units save heros/monsters have 1 HP. No save rolls or one sided combats, combat happens simultaneously with both sides dealing damage to eachother.
It's pretty quick and simple.

Is there a system that has both a wargame aspect and a rpg aspect that you are designed to use both of fluidly?

I know theoretically older dnd editions were supposed to have some of that, but ive hardly ever heard of it really being done much outside of theory. Same with the various OSR stuff like ACKs.

I would really love to play an rpg that could seemlessly transition into a small scale skirmish game then back again. Sometimes your character leads warbands, sometimes they act in indivigual combat.

Five core and pretty much all "five X" (like Five leagues from the borderlands for example) games use a very simple system:
Shooting: D6 + shooting stat vs defenders D6+defense stat. If it's higher,it hits and does damage.
Melee: both sides roll D6+melee stat. Higher roll does damage.
Damage is based on the used weapon profile.

The biggest problem I can see is I’d want my terrain to fit the game, like nukacola vending machines, and other retro futuristic stuff that fits the feel. None of my current terrain fits that and I don’t want to make a bunch of terrain that would only fit Fallout. Maybe one day when I’m retired or win the lotto.

Not sure how to cope with the season 6 changes; despite his nerf Roose was still the premier panic-focused commander for Stannis-loyalty Baratheons
Davos (C) does a decent impression of Roose's healing and control with Fealty to the Crown and Parley, but then you can't take Davos as an attachment in a unit of Lightbringers. This combo was already quite strong, and is even stronger now with the buff to True Conviction. The other good attachment option for Lightbringers, the Red Priestess, got changed to melee-only. It's really hard to justify not taking Davos-in-Lightbringers just to access his tactics cards.
I think I'll be playing more of Stannis, Rightful Heir. He still seems strong despite the Tactical Approach nerf, and the free points for attachments helps him tote along Justin Massey, who was necessary to fish out your strong tactics cards but also pretty expensive in an army of expensive units.
>pic
Tentative list which I'll try out soon. Vargo in Wardens is a meme, but with every army having 4 points of free attachments now, you're more likely to run into problem attachments that you'd really like to delete.

I have some good news and I have some bad news, anon.
The bad news can be encapsulated as follows:
>1980s and 90s
>FASA
>West End Games
>Naval wargaming
With that out of the way - FASA's Star Trek roleplaying game, as well as the first three editions of MechWarrior the RPG, integrate pretty seamlessly with their respective wargames (Star Trek Tactical Combat Simulator and BattleTech). Likewise West End's Star Wars D6 RPG system has extensive miniatures skirmish rules, along with a space combat miniatures game.
If you want something less clunky? The old Mutant Chronicles RPG and Warzone 1st Edition let you port characters back and forth. Many of the early Unique Characters for Warzone were just the Heartbreaker Games staff's personal characters from their Doom Trooper crew. It's a very solid experience if you want batshit magitech cyberpunk with a hell of a lot stolen from early 40k

They are just about finished releasing Cygnar's second army (Gravediggers, paratrooper trenchers) and starting on Khador's second (it's like an old gods deep woods warbeasts type thing called Old Umbrey). There's also 2 hard plastic 2 players starter sets. One Cygnar v Khador and one Brinebloods vs Khymera. They are still working out production issues on the 3d printed stuff. Some breaks and misprints get past QC that clearly should not, and it takes a few weeks to get replacements but they have been good about it.
They are also doing an MMF tribe for at home 3d printing. It mostly has terrain and alt sculpts, but they are also using to to re-release an old army (cephalyx).

They've shown some spoilers for the next 2 armies - another trollbloods army themed around battlefield scavenging and another Orgoth army more in line with the really old Mk1 era Orgoth illustrations.

Yeah Menoth is gone for now. Likely they will get a successor faction eventually (like khymera). Skorne probably too. But will be a while, because Old Umbrey is in first stages of preorder and we already know the 2 armies after that are not new factions.

No, armies within factions are completely separate. There is something called cadres, which are models that both armies in a faction can take. So for Cygnar, both gravediggers and storm legion can take models from the storm forge cadre (a bunch of lightning/stormsmith themed stuff) and from the hellslingers cadre (the cyngar half of the 2 player box with caine and the black 13th)

Sortof. If you have old Menoth, there are two armies you can build out of them, but most of their people either took the Stargate to Warcaster, moved to Zu, or died.

The earliest NuMenoth could show up is next year, as the next three release cycles are Khador, Trollbloods (Vietnam version) and either Orgoth 2 (apparently named Graveborne) or Khymaera 2 (Emberfrost Shard)

So Warcaster, the scifi game that Privateer made? Its technically the same setting as Warmachine, but on the other side of the galaxy and thousands of years later. When PP did their Oblivion "End Times" story arc, the robot cultist Cyriss followers built a Stargate to escape the planet when demons showed up to eat everyone's souls. Then a bunch of people used it to leave, including most of the Menothists who weren't secret infernalists.

The one who were secret infernalists mostly died. The ones who beither died nor left proceeded to move to Warmachine's version of Africa, and everyone keeps bugging Steamforged to bring them back with dinosaurs.

played my second game of shadowdeep. it was fun! but too easy. think I read the rules right, but I blasted through all the enemies in 2 turns and there was only a chance that 1 or 2 would trickle in via event phase. so it was kind of uneventful, but chill with some backgground spooky music.

am trying to get familiar with it so I can bring it to my library game night. No one plays wargames there, just rpgs and card games. I hope this cooperative and small scale game will be a good introduction to wargames for people. Need to find better terrain though, little weird to drag a bunch of paint cans and hair gel to use as trees.

I got a decent amount of miniatures, but not enough to play most wargames, even skirmish ones.

>>95892323
If you keep an eye out there are a lot of cheap models on the secondary market. One of Privateer's many (MANY) bone-headed moves was dumping a whole bunch of grab bags back stock on the used market for a quick buck when they needed to pay rent back in ~2019-2020 for dimes on the dollar. Stores have been liquidating the old lines as well, and since Steamforged has made no secret that they want to eventually dump all the legacy profiles people have been offloading those too.
>Love the aesthetic
Same, some of the models are great fun to paint. Have always disliked the game. The community has also been kind of insufferable for most of its existence, I just knew a bunch of the Press Gangers from my convention-running adventures.
If you're looking for alternate stuff, Reaper has a really blatant Dwarf warcaster and Ral Partha Europe sells "steam golem" Warjacks left over from endstage Mage Knight for very cheap.

Yep. There's a minis supplement for both land and space combat in 1e and a mass battles plugin that came out right before or after 2e, they should be in the /swg/ troves.
>FASA-Trek
It's a clunky system in a lot of ways (you knew that already, it's made by FASA). D100, skill-based, generally assumes the PCs are at least competent if not experts. It also has really cool mechanics for your PCs to affect the ship's performance in battle, and there's a simpler version of the space combat system for more massed battles. It's even got a ship building system.
>I already like Trek
There's a lot of Early Installment Weirdness. Ship designs are frozen in the TOS, TAS, and Movie timelines by and large, with a lot of non-canon or at the time demi-canon stuff filling in holes. Paramount's legal team stepped in and cock-punched FASA just after the first TNG books came out (and the game went bust before Best of Both Worlds aired), so there are few TNG ships and the entire universe blurb follows the first TNG Writer's Guide extremely closely. Including making the Bugs from "Conspiracy" and the Ferengi the main villains, Klingons are now Federation members, etc. As far as the movies go, it stops at STIV.
With all that said there are some extremely cool designs, and you can backfill many of FASA's original stat lines by using ship designs from other shows or with the ship building rules. The writer for several of their early supplements was John M. Ford, who was a consultant on OG Trek with DC Fontana and went on to essentially canonize the entire FASA Andorian book and chunks of several others while working on Enterprise. His take on Klingons is quite fun. As a Trek fan, the whole complex of stuff is absolutely fascinating.
FWIW, I've used my fleet of Attack Wing and Clix-Trek ships far more for FASA-Trek than their intended purposes. YMMV if you don't like moderately-detailed naval wargames

Hypothetically Rangers of shadowdeep/ other collough games like frostgrave could be used well in this way. Its essentially a stripped down d&d but in a different way then OSR. Opposed d20 rolls making actions quicker but still taking the basic principle of 5% incriments with mostly light modifiers. Shadowdeep basicly shows the pve angle and frostgrave shows the pvp angle.

dont know if it would feel too restrictive if you just had your one character though, but you are supposed to be able to play shadowdeep with others and either have only 1 secondary companion or none.

So it turns out that Thamar sold the location of the elven gods and 2/3rds of humanity's souls to Infernals to give humanity magic. Then the Infernals showed up to collect at the end of MK3. Cyriss also turned out to be a giant space computer goddess, and the CoC were building a Stargate to join her. When the Infernals showed up and started killing, a bunch of Menites fled through the gate to escape, while Durant(I think it was him) led a bunch down to Zu. What protectorate influence that's left now is the Exemplars hold some territory and Feora is out there, being a crazy bitch, so they can always use her to bring in a zealot army.

>>95893315
I thought Mat squished that idea in the last AMA? He did mention the army after Vietnam Trolls was warlock based and he was painting the armor red, but when asked if it was Skorne, he gave the canned "Eventyally down the line" answer they give when it's something they haven't planned out yet.

So we've got Reaper Covenant, Fane of Nyrros, Emberfrost, and an unknown Cryx army left, and we know it's a Fury army after Trolls. Most likely out those to be Fury based is Reaper, since rumors of them being warlock led have been around since MK4 came out, and Emberfrost, since Khymaera is very much all warlocks and Incarnates wasn't said to become a Shadowflame only Cadre like the others. I'm saying Orgoth, since it would line up with the 2 player starter, which we know is already having the molds tooled. I think it'll go Reaper -> Fane -> Emberfrost -> Cryx or new faction, since Cryx was a deviation to include it in the first place, after so many people asked for them.

I actually with they were much smaller. In LOTR orcs are described as shorter than men, with their tallest specimens being almost as tall as men but able to be as short as hobbits. This is for all orcs, including Saruman's uruk-hai.
But the WGF orcs are taller than some human figures at 1/56.

It's a plot point the dinosaurs aren't actually true dinosaurs, they're artificial theme park attractions that couldn't be controlled.
Ingen couldn't predict how much of veloraptor behavior was learned, so all their raptors are violent cannibal sociopaths that in the second book eat their own young from their own nests, and shit like spitting was an unintended side effect like many dinosaurs being unable to see still things or the sex changing. Wu talks it over with Hammond how they can improve their attractions, make them flashier, but Hammond wants the "real" thing and Wu can't get it through his head that none of the dinosaurs are the real thing.

Hirst arts molds are the oldschool option, but between the cost of the molds and dental plaster, you are better off finding a printing service and doing one of the billion dungeon tile STL sets out there.
You could also print Warhammer Quest tiles out and glue them to card for pretty cheap.

spacebase
md5: daa22664b519408cabda71f43ae562c4🔍
In the very early phases of building a space combat wargame that uses Newtonian movement and I've rigged up this design for a base. The idea is that you use D10s mounted in your base to track your ship's current vector, split into two component vectors at right angles to each other. So this ship would move 3" in the yellow direction and 2" in the red, and keep doing that until it spent thrust.

I feel like this is a good intuitive way to do newtonian movement without having to involve trig or a calculator. It helps that the arrow shape of the D10s' faces will point in the direction the ship travels based on that vector.

Thanks. I'm working out some ideas for factions. I think I want two human factions, one based on earth and one an independent state, plus at least two alien species and a species of AI who killed their creators and believe all organic life are dangerous, but I have a visual art guy who will have a lot of input there.

One neat thing about this is it leads to possibilities like generating a bunch of thrust, doing an attack run on a target, then spending thrust to flip 180 degrees and fire on the target while drifting "backwards" like the starfuries do on Babylon 5. You can also just flip 90 degrees, if your ship is optimized for broadside fire, and I'm hoping to have one of the human factions be basically the space British Royal Navy and lean hard into the broadside vibes

Spaceship, but we won't worry about movement in Z-axis because there's no reason to move up or down relative to the ecliptic plane as everything in a solar system is on that plane.

Also because we're playing this on a two dimensional table.

I'm in two minds about this, if you manage to capture lighting in a bottle you'll have greater reach with your own setting, but if you don't then something agnostic might be better. That said though, it's quite an open field at present for space games with attached settings and model ranges, while it's the setting agnostic ones that have competition.

>>95896165
>because space ship also needs to worry about movement in z axis
Without wishing to be too harsh on you I do see similar posts not infrequently on 4chan and it seems like people think "space is 3D so a space game should be 3D" without thinking about how it might be achieved, how practical that solution is, and how necessary.
Unless the X & Y axes are physically small and/or low res it's very difficult to come up with a practical system for the Z axis in the same scale and the same dimensions. Riser blocks, telescopic flight stands, some sort of clear acrylic Star Trek 3D chess bullshit
With air combat, well, there's an energy advantage to altitude; there's performance ceilings; there's performance advantages or disadvantages with different aircraft at different altitudes if you want to be that granular; there's also the ground with its flawless KDR. Space combat has none of that. For all practical purposes it's another dimension the exact same as the other two, but with a huge amount of fiddly bullshit that has to be introduced in order to include it

Anon has come up with a very elegant way to represent inertial combat. A further dimension would throw that elegance out, and for what?

I have toyed with minis agnostic but part of the logic is, I have an in with a fairly well known designer of files and his business manager who is already plugged into the wargame business and successfully manages one line for the designer, and they've mentioned launching a space wargame and that I'm the logical guy to come to for rules. Hitching my cart to theirs makes a lot more sense than trying to push it on my own.

Yeah, well, like I said, open field. Might as well, my opinion was pretty divided even without the backing, you could easily disappear into a Wargame Vault black hole with an agnostic game, and if you create enough gameplay archetypes it's as good as setting agnostic anyway.

Firestorm Armada has been dead for a long time, that whole vaguely Trekky, Twilight Imperium, space 4X computer game thing seems a pretty solid aesthetic. Not exactly asking for my opinion but I'm killing time before I go out anyway, my gut feeling is that space Napoleonic humans is a bit trite. Having them be stocky norf FC brick looking aliens is also trite, but somehow it seems better, at least to my taste. Maybe it's the verisimilitude, if you want to expand on this I feel the whole galactic bazaar aesthetic has got longer legs. Stray too far into Napoleonic Humans and you're running up against people printing BFG

That's a good point about space Napoleonic humans, I'll consider it, but regardless, I'll definitely have a faction whose gimmick is broadside combat, since that's a pretty natural evolution of the rules.

I'm not a fan of the generic blocky Halo ships, but they're popular for a reason and they will probably exist anyway. I'd love to include a faction with a strong Art Deco inspiration. My basic ideas

>Human faction themed on broadside combat with lasers and kinetics, aristocracy, I might make them space Spaniards rather than space British
>Human faction that mixes spinal guns and fighters in equal measure, basically carriers with particle accelerators that run the full length of the ship
>Water breathing colonial organism alien faction that uses ships that are broader than they are long, relying on banks of forward facing beams (rough visual inspiration from klingon birds of prey and romulan warbirds)
>Alien faction that heavily uses missile swarms and relies on mobility control. Still working on ideas for biology
>Robotic faction of AIs that killed their creators Terminator style. Their gimmick is to ignore the requirement for a capital ship that everyone else has, so they field six or so cruisers of about the same weight instead of a battleship, carrier group, or destroyer group

I’m glad someone else noticed.
Ok folks, saying this out loud for the people in the back:
If you represent your dilophosaurus with frills and human sized, it’s a dead giveaway that you just copied Jurassic Park, because it’s a pure invention from the movie. Dilophosaurus are pretty cool in their own right damnit, they were basically the apex predators of their time.
You can make dinosaurs weird in unexpected ways, but damnit try to be original about it at least

See, I'm basing this on the fact that in real physics a vector can be split into two component vectors at right angles to each other. That means a hex grid will do more harm than good, since with that they're at 60 degree angles to each other. Otherwise this would still be a Battletech homebrew instead of an independent game idea.
