How do you make a scifi setting with unique classes that aren't just fantasy classes with a cyberpunk naming scheme?

>Tactical Assault Trooper= Fighter
>Neural Tech Netrunner= Mage
>Underworld Street Fixer= Rogue

etc.

No classes, roles. Look how Shadowrun did it (which is kinda dogshit but still better than D&D)

How was the quote? Grunts win skirmishes, artillery wins battles, and logistics win wars? Something along those lines.

You divide the classes in two - combat part and nom-combat part.
Instead of assasin class being sci-fi rogue, you have a
A fat-ass diplomat can be a Heavy Gunner of Explosive Specialist, while a skinny tech-specialist can be a high-tech assasin, or a sniper with camo-cloak.
A SPEHS MURHEN with dancing and singing as a skill can either be a fire-eater flamer operator, or a really weird librarian.
Your typical thug with small arms and brawl expertise can also specialise in streetsmarts, or decide to get a cleaver and become a cook.

You're mixing up two quotes

>"Infantry wins battles, logistics wins wars.
>-John "Blackjack" Pershing

...Or...

>Infantry win firefights. Tanks win battles. Artillery wins wars
>Warhammer 40k, unofficial motto of the Imperial Guard artillery corps

You won't unless you think way outside the box on what the class does. Most standard ideas and their combos have been done before. Take just the idea of a fighter.

>Fighter-armored guy with skilled with all weapons
>Barbarian-Melee fighter who makes himself stronger
>Paladin-Armored weapon master who adheres to a code to cast magic
>Monk/Brawler-Melee fighter who forgoes weapons and fights with his hands and feet

You can keep going with it, but that's the gist, unless you're going way out of left field, your Drone Mage is going to look a lot like a Summoner. Don't worry about how original they are, concentrate on if they feel fun to play.

I'm not trying to blow your mind Anon but the term "warrior" in real life has referred to everything from greek hoplites to germanic berserkers to fighter jet pilots.

With classes as broad as Fighting Man and Magic User, you can make anything feel like a reskin of them. At a certain point, comparisons can be drawn but they aren't important.

Yes. Works for cyberpunk 2020/red (yes solo is the best fighter, but every role can fight pic related is a news reporter) and Savage Worlds (buy skills and abilities with experience, you can commit to something or spread out). Classless systems are the new hotness. It's like modern small squad tactics vs yesteryear's massive military regiments marching into machineguns.

Also this.
