I suddenly remembered this game exists and went back to delve into it.

Possibly the most infuriating lesson in why total RNG dungeons are awful, but I can barely find discussion of this game anywhere.

It’s basically Gygax’s AD&D map generator turned into a roguelike dungeon crawl. Complete with classic bullshit like taking five steps and instantly dying to a 20 damage poison trap when you have 4hp.

I played this a lot in 2014 when I worked at a call center. I remember that the backtracking mechanics make no sense. Also one of my coworkers was like "what's blog of holding" and even though it's completely innocent, I was super embarrassed for some reason.

I can't even imagine getting that high right now. The game is utterly infuriating on Advanced when you'll literally sometimes start the game, press E once, and end up in the trap loop before dying to a spike pit with a 4+ success needed.

Here's some tips:
Ditch Dungeon Robbers as soon as you can. The only good classes are Clerics, Thieves, and Fighters.

I've done better with Dungeon Robber on some runs than thief is the thing, just by virtue of being able to use platemail, shield, and sword so that I can actually kill some of the things at lower levels.

Mostly I've noticed that having food and oil flasks is optimal to just run away and distract enemies.

The thing with Thief is that there looks to be a glitch. If you go to use an item and then return to the main battle stage, then you can usually sneak attack again. That might be why I'm thinking Thief is better. Also, traps are always the fucker of my ass so only getting fucked on a 1 is nice.

You attacked with your fists instead of using an item. The Van Helsing kit is a consumable item.

Also why were you deep enough to find werewolves at such a low level and not running?

Should've used the wolfsbane.

>why were you deep enough to find werewolves at such a low level

>enter random room
>room is an elevator, deposits you 3 floors below, no up button, also you're now lost
>ohfuck.jpg, time to go back asap
>there's the staircase back up, thank fuck
>staircase brings you a level up, then immediately slides you 2 levels down
Agreed with running or wolfsbane instead of engaging the furfag in any other way.

Nothing about the kit's description indicated you had to use it mid-combat, I wasn't running because the item indicated I could take it.

Gonna piggyback off this thread to list late oughties/early 10s rpg blogs I used to read:

Blog of holding
Dungeonmastery
Gnome Stew
Grognardia
Chatty DM
Critical Hits (might be misremembering the name of this one)
John Rossi's blog

A lot are dead but some can be found through Archive.org, and some are still around.

I tried to equip it when I got it, it had no option. I guess you have to do it when you encounter the enemy but before you engage it?

In other words, game fuckin sucks

Nah, it works like the oil flasks. You have the option to (u)se an item and it's in there when facing a werewolf, medusa, or vampire.

Oh man I used to love this fuckin game.
I swear shit like this is more fun than a lot of videogames you could pay for.

Yea it's a poor substitute for actually playing OSR D&D (as most implementations of them in vidya form are), but as a videogame it's super based.

Yeah, I remember having a lot of fun turning RPGs into text vidya back in my school years. I didn't even know what actual RPGs were, just had access to stuff like the Death Maze boardgame. Still, the very possibility to have a computer create worlds and adventures to your ideas was no less amazing than AI is now, probably more.
