I'm shocked that they are packing 436 cards into the base supplement. Is anyone else a fan of Gwent? I'm pretty excited for this, but the deluxe version is pretty ridiculous, the standard should have an acrylic game mat instead of paper, or at least cardboard you know.

I just started playing the Witcher 3, and while Gwent is a welcome diversion, and I've generally been a fan of Triple-Triad style RPG side games, I'm kind of hesitant to go anywhere near a real-world product of it.

I think how half the cards have some ugly dude on them is the main reason, but the unapologetic "This card is just flatout 10 times more powerful than this other card" style of balance makes sense in a side game where you're roaming the lands, trying to find rare cards, but doesn't really make itself great for an actual game.

The balance is usually the rarity of powerful cards, however, Gwent is one super basic bitch of a card game. It baffles me to no end how people love it.

Crimson Company is incredibly awesome if you want a basic bitch card game. The thinky part is the card auction in a two player game.

Well as one anon said, it's like Triple Triad or Pazaak, it was a really solid extra game inside an already great game. As for how a real version would work, they already went about redesigning the game somewhat for a standalone digital version that has been playable for a few years. I imagine a few more revisions are going into this. All it needs to be is as fun and competent as Uno or similar party games, do you not think that this can easily pull that off? Extra strategy will certainly go into the deck building aspect, as again, there's 436 playing cards.

I'm going to guess that the irl version is based on their standalone digital Gwent game which was made and balanced for online PvP and functions a bit different than the version in Witcher 3

How many times have they released Gwent at this point? They tried and failed to make a digital version years ago. I think there was also a failed physical release.

this is the first physical release, there was a good singleplayer game, and their digital PvP version is fairly successful

Yeah, failed is a strong word, the game just isn't profitable enough to keep a constant dev team working at it. The servers are still up and it has periodic community-driven official balancing patches.
