>TQ: What is your favourite mount that your army can take?
Anonymous No.95875973

>TQ

I would love for juggernauts to return as mounts.
If they're not available, can't beat a trusty horse.
I'll probably have a game next week, is taking 6 dragon ogres to a friendly game ungentlemanly? I've no actual dragons, only big monster I have are chimeras, and they're still on oval bases.

Not sure what they could really get. Manticores have been attributed to Chaos/evil and Wyverns to Orcs of their original monster list. They have giant snails and giant leeches as weird native fauna IIRC but neither is really suitable for battle. A knight on giant snail would be funny, but presumably too slow to really be worth using.

Giants and dragons are right out. Bretonnians would rather kill than ally with them. How could you fight in the Lady's honour fighting alongside a giant or dragon? Sleipnir and kelpies are not French mythology. I have no idea what a mist swan is.

The bicorn, terrasque and questing beast all fit although two of these are not things that would come to mind for knights to ally with or ride.

We will only get Amazon's if GW bothers with a Lustria-based campaign for TOW, which is unlikely since the justification for Cathay is an expedition fleet coming to Marianburg

Arthurian legend is full of weird peoples who should be nominally enemies of Camelot and Christendom converting and joining Arthur so I don't think such things should be denied to Bretonnia either. Maybe only as named characters though. They had Saracens and a werewolf for one.

Pic from Skaven vs Daemons yesterday. This picture was just for narrative purposes. I rotated my army 90degrees to actually start the game.

We did the O&G narrative scenario with Daemons ambushing a delivery of Doomwheels. We just said that they didn't have any rats to push the wheels so they moved and acted like the pony carts.
I lost but a pretty good game overall.

The back half of my army in the picture got destroyed but held the line long enough for the Doomwheel in the middle to eventually escape as the daemon prince just pounced on the one in front and the dogs caught the one in the back.

The purple Hellpit got distracted fighting Furies then he failed to restrain so he was staring at the cannon for the rest of the game. He never did a single wound while the cannon just whittled him down. Very disappointing.

The Stormvermin and Aspiring Lord on Gorebeast (Large black rat) did great. Some multiple layers of buffs and hexes had my Stormvermin hitting on 4s but wounding on 5s against the Bloodletters but somehow pulled it off and overran into a tzeentch chariot. The DP tried to assist the chariot but the Asp Lord swept in on my turn as the last 7 clanrats gave their lives to redirect some bloodcrushers away from him after a lucky double 1 FBIGO reform move.

Hobgoblins, especially the Eastern ones never have been and were limited to the ROR and don't really have much precent for mixing with the western greenskins, especially after the animosity towards hobgobs from the chorf shenanigans.

the followers of khorne also hate with a passion the followers of slaanesh, yet it's still logical for them to share one book and to leave to the player how to limit things depending on what his army is meant to represent.

without a harness whatever pulls the chariot cannot slow down without the momentum of the chariot behind making it crash against it*, with a harness if the animal pulling the chariot decelerates so does the chariot behind at the same rate

Not everyone is a noble, so yes, but ulthuan is a paradise, chances are they have to work very little in order to get plenty of resources, plus it's probably approached as a bucolic hobby more than a backbreaking job, like one can imagine tailoring, forging and crafting other tools too being more about the artistry than the mass production of it, both because elven demographics are shrinking and also because elven craft is likely so high in quality to be very long lived so they wouldn't need to churn out stuff at fast rate at any point, they can always use some thousands years old dress or armor or fork that once belonged to grandma.

Also a little weird everything but miao ying is launching, but no separate jade warriors boxes? So if you miss the battalion you just don't have an army, and the only way to get more/less infantry, cavalry and artillery is to buy multiple battalions?

Fantasy/TOW is in a weird position because of just how much of the setting is pulled from real-world historical cultures. The minute GW tries to do "non-European" factions - like Ind, Araby, or even the Amazons - some cock sucking moral busybody (likely within the company itself) will throw an absolute shitfit about "offensive" this depiction of X culture is, and how GW participating in "cultural appropriation".

In the event we do get these facitons, expect them to wind up like Cathay - which is to say an extremely generic depiction of superficial, nondiscript elements of that particular culture as seen in other fantasy settings. An impression of an impression, you might say. Expecting some interesting twist on, say, the Ottoman Empire or one (or more) of the various Indian powers, is so far beyond the scope of what GW can, or is willing, to do.

I'll use one example to sort of highlight the missed potential of Cathay - the mandate of heaven.
The Dragon Emperor should be a distant figure guiding the empire, not really concerned with its daily operations. That responsibility should fall to his children/bureaucrats/generals who form factions and compete. The DE tacitly gives his approval to one faction, elevating them to the status of a ruling dynasty, which rules they lose the DE's favour, starting the cycle of competition over again.
For the period TOW is set, Cathay could be an a transitional period - like that of Song to the Yuan, or the Yuan to the Ming. This creates an interesting narrative and helps Cathay mirror the Three Emperors' ordeal in the Empire.

>Sigmarines.
The lore and setting is abysmal and whimsical.
They keep reusing major characters from Fantasy, to this date, when they should be trying harder to get people to care about anything else.
Many of the armies are incomplete or relying on Fantasy models still.
Many players don't feel secure in it because many models and and armies got removed suddenly.

There's some good sides to it. Namely bouncing off some gameplay ideas (Spear Head, Warcry, gameplay consolidation, etc.) except almost no one plays it. Sentinels sure, but the Ballon doesn't follow. Sure it's a flying warmachine but I doubt it moves fast or has good melee. A flying firing platform with a couple of infatry missile weapons isn't guaranteed to be a must-take given the current state of the game. I think terracotta sentinels might be special with jade/warpstone ones in rare. We might also get a full army list in this AJ just not with all the units released yet. GW has shown more willingness to have units that exist without models in TOW than in their other games. I think the balloon will be reasonably fast, reasonably tough and its bombs will be good, which is why I default think it'll be a good unit.

Unfortunately I doubt the magistrate or gate keepers will be much good outside of a BSB. GW hasn't really been willing to give support abilities enough oomph in TOW either.

I'm not looking forward to seeing more flying units in the game. That's a terrible thing, really. Gyrocopters are oppressive and impossible to actually deal with aa chaos unless you make a sorcerer cast magic missiles at them (and skirmishing marauders will just get shot to death immediately, so they're not a solution either), I can only imagine how annoying those stupid lanterns are going to be.
Overall, I'm not very interested in this Cathay nonsense. It's fucked that they added a new army before bringing back all the real ones. Maybe I'm just a pessimist, but I don't think the anons creaming themselves over this will actually a) paint the models, b) play a game, and c) stick around and contribute to the threads. It's more about how ranked up units simply cannot catch a flying unit. Gyrocopters can just repeatedly fly over & behind a unit if said unit keeps reforming to face it. Fly (9) and swiftstride is also pretty disgusting, don't get me wrong, but lots of things move that fast and aren't as annoying to play against. Skirmishers (and especially skirmishers who happen to fly, which are the real scourge of the meta right now, see the pegstar and also gyros) can turn on a dime and charge them, as I explained, but they're likely to just get exploded before they do anything.

The last 11 games I've played and posted about have been at 2000 points. I never said anything about getting dogres, I actually really dislike them and I don't want them in my collection. My meta is not flying units, my point is that I find them annoying to deal with. I certainly don't hate them, but I do dislike the effect that flying has on the game. I think Steed of Shadows (and Travel Mystical Pathways, for that matter. TMP is actually way worse.) shouldn't be in the game, for example. It's too centralizing, it makes or breaks the army, it lets you ignore terrain, other units and encourages you to deploy like a bitch, and, even if it's really good and nice to have, I don't like it. Flying units can also break out of a complete encirclement. Even if you play well and charge a unit in both its front and its rear, it won't matter. It makes sense, but it's not fun.
If anons disagree with me about Cathay, then that's another matter. But my opinion on flying units is something I'll stand by. Also, what do you mean by a fresh screenshot? Do you want more pictures I've never posted before? Here's one that shows what I mean by flying units being annoying, those screamers just kept flying over my knights for the whole game. It's thematic, and it makes sense. It's what a screamer of tzeentch would do, but it's not very fun when it happens to you. Again, I'm not complaining. I get it, chaos doesn't have shooting, so flying units are a bit of a counter. That's fine, my problem is more about what flying does in a vacuum rather than against my army specifically. I should have been more clear about that.

I got you confused with the khorne maruader anon then. Still the amount of whining you are throwing down about mechanics that have been in the game since forever (albeit dragonlords and eq in TOW really spot lights it) but has never really been that breaking. Harpies and carrion, flying monsters, I remember when Pegasus knights came, never fully broke the game moreso than chaos warshrines or certain Heros did. Because as you noted with gyros, generally flying shit breaks easy and is lighter than ground based stuff. Like 1 cannon can probbaly dirt nap the new Balloon over 2 turns.
As for moving through stuff ethereal has been less prominent but I have numerous memories of my friends high elves going ethereal due to some magic and running through me, or chaos moving my units, or the warshrine doing some weird shit. Oh and slann flying ethereally into the centre to drop a purple sun into my beastmen line. Etc. Flying (10) spell is dumb tho I agree should be flying (movement)
I'm just saying for flying to cause this much heartburn it's probbaly duento your army limitations. Dwarfs never have much issue taking my jabber or cocktrice or harpies down despite me usually getting a good position or 1 good round of fighting. The baloon could be more annoying in that it's going to sit back instead of fly towards kill zones, but until we see stats we don't know if its going to have the speed or toughness or points to do anything your described or just hover menacingly before artillery or a dragon pops it.

I'll admit, I was being a bit hyperbolic about flying units being "impossible" to deal with. There are ways, I know, and they're by no means the devil incarnate or anything like that... I just don't like 'em! I should have been more clear about that.
>Pegasus knights came, never fully broke the game moreso than chaos warshrines or certain Heros did
I can't speak about the 8th ed meta, but really? Warshrines? My cursory reading of the 8th ed chaos army book did not indicate that they'd be anywhere near meta. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'd just really like you to elaborate. I thought they just made your lords and heroes roll on the eye of the gods table more often. On the other hand, I have heard many accounts of the flying circus/pegstar demolishing the game back in 6th. It's also uber-meta right now. When you combine flying with skirmishing, bad things happen!
>As for moving through stuff ethereal has been less prominent
I think you're thinking of Walk Between Worlds. Travel Mystical Pathways is the one that lets you teleport a unit anywhere within 12". It's arguably better then Steed of Shadows depending on how you use it, but it has the same effects on the game. Ignoring terrain and other units, etc etc. The problem with Steed of Shadows giving a unit Fly (12) is that you're effectively getting triple the amount of movement you normally would. That's three turns worth of movement and you get to fly! What chaos army wouldn't want that? You're essentially forced to always bring a level 4 daemonologist to every game because the other lores just can't compete with that.
>flying to cause this much heartburn it's probbaly duento your army limitations
I really don't think so. Flying units could do what I've described to any army, even one with a lot of shooting. The thing with flying is that it allows you to bypass a lot of restrictions that prevent certain kinds of fuckery during the movement phase.

Again gunlines bret and elves are less suseptible. Also ambushing can allievate it as your one of your units is off the board. Flying is mentally annoying but should infantry no longer break so easily to monsters the reality is you'll have to be ready to take a charge and counter charge your turn and that should beat most flyers. Dragon lords are breaking things because they can reliably kill 5 to 10 infantry a turn and then fly away in their turn or break stuff in 2 turns. If that stops, flying becomes once again more mental. Plus as I said I think the baloon will be slow and not able to do this but we will see.

>orders 100 boxes

I hear about LGSs doing this often, but isn't that a terrible idea if they actually got 100? Unless they're in a high population density area there's no way they're going to sell out. Having 100 warhammer players spend out through all of the different game systems seems reasonable, 100 local TOW players seems like a stretch and 100 people wanting to get into cathay, or even enough players wanting to buy multiple seems absolutely crazy.

no
the spirit dragon was slain before the others were even born
then there's the storm dragon, who's the eldest alive
then there's the jade dragon, the older out of the sons
we don't know the relative ages of the fire, iron and sea dragons, but I'm going to assume the iron dragon is the youngest of the 3 because he's the moon empress's favourite, and the other 2 have misbegotten middle child vibes
the light dragon is "one of the younger" children, so someone must be even younger
the shadow dragon and the dragon who has no wind assigned (so he must be chaos, obviously) would be the 7th and 9th respectively to me

why is the shadow dragon not mommy's favourite? dunno, but he sounds like he left cathay too (bets are he's playing rebel in nippon and trained ninjas)

making the chaos dragon the absolute youngest one would also explain to me why the second youngest, and kindest, could leave cathay, to go search for her little brother up in the north wastes, past kislev.

Hearing some more rumors about cathay. To compensate for the limited depth of the range all cathayan infantry models will have "cloud stepping" which lets them behave as Fly (9) skirmishers on their own turn, to represent their powerful wuxia abilities.

>sat back and never died all game yet it wasn't the end all. Artillery spotting is at least less gay than helping EotG pop off every fucking time.
My concern about the balloon is not that it's just going to sit there doing nothing. My concern is that, like all other flying units in TOW, it's going to be flying too fast! When a unit flies, it can ignore the leadership test required to march when within 8" of an enemy unit. That means it can very reliably fly right past whatever is threatening it, forcing that unit to either ignore it and go find something else to kill, or waste a turn reforming, only for the flying unit to repeat what it just did and fly right on over it again. That's what gyrocopters (while having a 4+ T5 W3 statline btw) do, they just keep flitting back and forth over your units. Again, that's fine. Thematic, even. But it's really annoying! Even if you had an army with a lot of shooting, what are you gonna do about that, just keep reforming and firing with the to hit penalty that come from doing that? Also, anything with a Fly above 5 just cannot get charged by M4 infantry, mathematically. Think about it! And has there been a single flying unit in TOW below Fly (8)? The only thing I can think of that even gives Fly (8) is the magic carpet. So, with most cavalry being M7... cavalry units don't get to charge fliers either! Let's take the example of the pegasus knights. They have Fly(10) and swiftstride, so their declarable charge distance is 19" vs. the 16" declarable charge distance that M7 cavalry units have. And no, you can't just shoot them down, because they have heavy armour, shields, barding and a 6+ ward save. They're even skirmishers, so they can charge backwards!
I resent the notion that talking about flying units in a bad light is just chaos whining. Flying units are a problem that affects every army, not just chaos.

>cant get shot
by guns if they are forced to reform often, but most the time hitting on 5s or 6s (elfs 4-5 of better) due to move and over half range wounding on 5-6 will whittle it down. then ofc unless the rumors are true, poison bow blocks can probably 1 round it the same as any monster. and yes, pegusai do get shot to shit by the poison bow spam the same as anything really. Also gunpowder armies tend to have access to cannons which again, shouldn't have much trouble hitting the baloon. I think nuln even if empire is weak shouldnt have trouble tagging the baloon. Elves will probably be fine as well. orcs have gobbo archer spam, TK have always hit on 5 and poison, bret has a hsitton of archers and their aforementioned flying cav, beastmen... well have shit for shooting nayways same with chaos. theres always RRR to equip and pitch damage. Basically, im saying if gyros havent been unstoppable, one floating baloon shouldnt either. But if they are somehow cheap i can see it being a problem.
>-cant be charged
do you think the flying baloon is going to get swiftstride? do you think a chaos knight is going to be unable to catch the baloon on open ground? this is assuming its somehow above speed 7 which would be pretty crazy. it also will likely have cumbersome on its guns, so its not contributing if its moving making it a 250pt paperweight. As for other infnatry examples, generally flyers and skirms cant be charged by infantry due to speed but whop knows, maybe the matched play scnearios force them to commit or you use magic terrain or something etc. I dont think flyers are "that" bad and I dont think this baloon will be that bad but we dont really know what its stats are quite yet.

Right has a bit more brighter red.

Personally, go with both, paint your unit 50/50, or even got with 3, 4 different sets, it'll give out more the impression of unruly mob than a 'united' unit.
