I only ever played psionic in a 3.5 eberron campaign, and it is just a different type of spellcasting there. Like it's point based instead of vancian and you can customize spells more like picking damage type. It never felt removed enough from regular vancian casting to justify itself at all, and I've seen other players play sorcerers fluffed to be psionics and it works equally good to having a dedicated class.

Were psionics much different back when they were introduced (which was Dark Sun? I think)
