I can't see a possible world where running anything but modified 5e is a good idea. Here's the thing. I know 5e is shit, it barely works for the actual genre it's trying to emulate, and WOTC is a wallet sucking fuckfest of a company. But consider this: As much fun as an RPG is to read, ultimately we are here to play. Maybe you want to run Unknown Armies or GURPS, but when are you actually going to be able to get together a group for them? All anyone plays is 5e. You can type all you want about how x game is better or 5e is bad in x way, but matter of the fact is the only person who's going to be able to actually play table top roleplaying games is someone who runs 5e

I have. Hundreds of times. Almost every week for like six or seven years. It's really easy, people are willing to put effort into spending time with their friends. You probably learned how to play football once so you could enjoy it with your mates, or something similar.

When I was uni, 5e didn't make up even half the games in ttrpg society. And given the oversupply of players vs GMs, any niche game was pretty much guaranteed to attract enough players to run.

I find it hard to imagine things have changed so completely in 5 years.

I started a BECMI campaign with my old pals.
Already 2 character deaths (we are rusty) but it's a blast and the survivors will grow stronger.
I never felt such sense of adventure for a long, long time.

OSRfags in here are cultists psychopaths but OSR games are amazing.

I've been playing an ongoing 3.5e campaign with some dudes for the past 3 years.
They were, at the time, complete strangers too who invited me to their table via a common friend.
There's people out there willing to play anything, even if 5e is the vast majority of the TTRPG pie.
