>get massively into Interplay fallout and find Blackisle TTRPG system
>Read about 40% of the rules, friend gets all of it and thinks it's good and does light tweeking on AC
>Do too much preamble and irl stuff makes neither of us able to see the other irl to actually get the games going despite having made a whole skeleton of a campaign with characters set in the island of Sani-Bel, Florida
And also missing the finale thread of all guardsmen party

I'll be honest I mostly made the thread to encapsulate my depression finding out about this yesterday

>One friend of a friend finds out I'm into dungeons and dragons
>"Hey anon! That's so fucking cool! Would you like to DM for a party? I can get 3-4 guys and we can stard up something!"
>"Sure thing pal, round them up! What do you want to play?"
>"We'll play 5e!"
>I'm unfamiliar with it, but willing to learn, say "No problem!"
>Download all books
>Download some premade oneshots
>Study everything for a couple weeks, make maps and props and shit
>Third week in, check back on the dude "Hey how is that party coming up?"
>"So far I half convinced one guy but I don't think he'll stick..."
>Dreams shattering again
It's been 12 years since the last game and I'm starting to believe it'll never happen again

Should've learned GURPS, the rules are pretty simple from a GM's perspective, it's the players that need to learn a billion things to be combat effective and build a character that swings outside their point total.

Just play online.
Even if it's a complete shitshow, I'm sure you could've found ONE(1!) functional group in 12 years, instead of being nogames all this time.

It's the exact opposite actually, the players don't really have to know anything but how to roll 3d6

>Get invited to a game of Lancer.
>Game has alot of retarded political shit in the lore, but the DM says he will be running a homebrew setting he's been working on awhile.
>"Well, all right, finally a chance for me to play something besides 5e."
>DM never sets a start date, game never materialises.
>DM says he doesn't really have time to run a game any more.
>Two weeks later DM invites me to a DnD 5e campaign he's been running for a month now.

idk if greatest, but I missed some irl campaign that seemed cool partly because I overslept and felt sad and jelly about it the following months. Full story is that the GM was going to do a one shot related to the campaign before the campaign itself, and afterwards ended up deciding that only people who showed to the oneshot would be in the campaign.
But then I found out that the whole campaign had the worst possible ending imaginable so I guess now I don't feel so bad about missing it, but I still feel bad about the GM and the other players for how things turned out.
(Ending: the players got in a fight that was supposed to be unwinnable, but they won due to a bunch of super lucky rolls. As that pretty much killed the GM's plans, he just had some allies of the enemy they killed show up, capture and instakill the player characters)

What this guy >>95904017 says. If the GM is doing his job, then he's going to end up doing 99.9% of the work. The players should be able to just simply describe their characters and what they want to do, and the GM should be able to translate that into mechanics. The players should only be overwhelmed if the GM isn't doing his job right, or the players are just truly irredeemably retarded.
The only disconnect might be players coming into the game expecting to pull off cool stunts all the time, and then being disappointed when those things don't always pan out in reality, because GURPS assumes a realistic baseline. Of course, the GM can permit cinematic rules, skills, and advantages if he wants things to play out like an action movie.

Never trust a 5e DnDrone to actually play any other games unless you've SEEN them actually play other games before. 99% of the time they're totally full of shit.
