Snakes and Ladders was an ancient religious based game, Buddhism I think, and the whole " you can't control shit" was kinda the point.

Everyone starts at the same spot spiritually but some people will just breeze through everything while others will get dunked on constantly and there is no real reason for either outcome besides the universe or heavens or what have you just wanting it to be that way.
