The nature of the system makes any significant change to the core rules worth calling a "new edition" create a nightmarish backlog of content you NEED to rebalance in the reprint.

Good games don't need new editions, the reason Warhammer gets a new edition every 3 years is for marketing hype, DnD gets new editions every 10 years because it is not a good game.

I just want Mecha 4e. I would bomb many brown children for it.

It's going to be an unholy mess regardless
It should recognize certain legacy issues like swing damage progression, retarded weapon lists and skill bloat AND manage to rearrange them in ways that don't simply create more problems down the line

There are a few theories.
Your average GURPSfag will say it's the apotheosis of gaming.
Your local realist whose actually played GURPS instead of just making characters and fantasizing about the games they'd like to play will say it's fine as is. No real glaring problems if the you're the right kind of autard to mesh with it.
People who've been SJG will just say the company is basically braindead. Kept alive on life support without anything actually going on.

SJG makes all their money from Munchkin, it's not worth the writing and editing resources.

The amount of content they were pushing out cratered after they started Dungeon Fantasy, which is just GURPS tailored to a generic Fantasy setting.
There hasn't been a major book like Martial Arts or Low-Tech for so long I just consider the game largely abandoned, with newer books being something I download purely for archival purposes and never actually read.

It is pretty good as is. I've only had a few issues that were resolved with a few google searches like players making dodge tanks or forgetting to omit disadvantages like colorblind.
It's a pretty decent catch-all system that works for what its worth. Only issue I have is stuff like combat reflexes gets thrown onto everything and seeing it every setting no matter what the campaign is like.
Any new edition would probably just tack on 3-4 pdf's worth of extra rules like -1 on consecutive dodges or more detail on things like animal riding, driving, and meta traits like ghosts or spirits. Even then, the 20yr old core rulebook explains these enough to homebrew it all yourself, only issue is you almost always find someone that breaks the system in one way or another.
