>>95490340TQ: Older games or Newer games?
>>95914300 (OP)>TQOlder games are secret gems in the rough, from a more pure time where people were breaking into a budding industry and everyone was new & shit a trpg design, but did their best. Could be I've just grown tired of middle-modern systems like 3.5e to 5e and indie slop, but older western AND japanese trpgs are proving to have a lot of novelty to me.
Maybe I'm jaded, but newer games feel like they're "designed" first, and written after. Could just be the prevalence of 300 page "rules lite" games, where most of the pages are bullshit data tables. I enjoy lots of data and options, but it feels stupid when slapped onto a 2, 3, 4 "stat" system with simple dice resolution.
That said, there's plenty of newer JTPRG games (say, after 2018 as a random cutoff date) that are "pretty neat" and feel like a whole complete package, rather than just a board game with extra words added to the manual.

Just hope ye can read it, because the only thing translated for it so far is the demo.
I haven't even really been looking for it, but there's a lot of activity online about wares blade. They've got all the books up online for sale and they're selling 3d prints of the mechs. I dunno if it's a renaissance but it seems to be getting a lot of love.

Don't expect any fancy new Sword World 2.5 stuff anytime soon, aside from the Core Rulebook Deluxe and maybe the Eusiz book.
because of a sudden churn of interest, there'll be a bunch of Sword World RPG related content from the Kobold going forward.

When it comes to Mektons, IMHO, the combats are definitely faster and less fiddly for both. However, once you expand into the Technical Manuals (separate books) the design process can become very fiddly because you can absolutely nail down what you imagine for the mecha with the system.
Both Mekton II and Mekton Zeta play equally well, but the mecha in II are more fragile than the same size mecha in Zeta. Zeta also has base rules for Roadstrikers, Mektons, and Starships in the main book while II has them in three separate books. Overall, it will depend on what you use it for, but the II core rules is a more self contained ruleset while the Zeta core rules is a more versatile ruleset.
If you are introducing new players to the system, Mekton II may be preferable to Mekton Zeta because it is more self contained and thus easier to grasp.

So who wants more Sword World news? but this time not from the usual place. Needgames (The Italian publisher of Fabula Ultima) got the publishing rights for Sword World 2.5 and apparently will start releasing the Core Rule books next year. Now hopefully they will also do an english release of the game, but most likely it will be just Italian.
>>95950104Oh snap for real? I guess if it does well we could see an english release or we have to tell them on discord we want it in english as well.
>>95950600Yeah, they had new publishing announcements on yesterday official Twitch stream. >>95950820Would be cool if we could get an english release through them somehow. But I guess it will depend on how well the italian edition sells first. Best to keep an eye out in case people can send in feedback or something.

So complete noob here, I despise RPing (I literally cannot RP, everything ends up monotone as fuck) but I got roped into playing a TRPG with some friends. Its called murder mystery? Any non spoilery tips to make it easier on myself?
I honestly really dont know what to expect as ive never played a TRPG other than D&D like 20 years ago in high school if that even counts.
Im autistic btw and sorry if this isnt the right place to ask lads
>>95962812Unless youโre talking about โJubenshaโ or doing a murder mystery dinner party, you might want to get the exact name of the game, since โmurder mysteryโ is more of a literary genre. But presuming you mean your friends roped you into a game where youโre detectives solving a murder case, just treat it like a game of Clue. Take notes, ask questions, and generally have a pulse.
>I literally cannot RP, everything ends up monotone as fuckShouldnโt be a problem unless youโre being demanded to affect an accent or something. Got plenty of friends who just talk Iโm their normal voice for this stuf. Just have to know the difference between in-character and out of character thinking processes.
>>95962846The game is called ใพใ ใฟใ I dont know what version of it we are playing yet though
Ive also never played clue so I dont really know what you mean by that
> Just have to know the difference between in-character and out of character thinking processes.what do you mean by this
>>95962905Okay, so bad news, this is legitimately the first time I've heard of it as a westerner
But good news, this looks like part of a general group of game category called "social deduction" games, like what we call Mafia or Werewolf.
In a sense, it's two games in one. You'd all be secretly assigned a role at the start as ether an investigator or a killer role, each with competing interests. The investigators have to pick out which one among them is the killer pretending to be the investigator by investigating clues and interrogating each other, and the killer has to lie and make false accusations on other investigators to convince the other investigators someone else is the killer.
Giving a specific tip isn't going to be easy just cause each scenario presented will be different, and looking at all the scenarios from what I'm googling up a lot of these scenarios get elaborate to the point of basically being an entire script, but in essence it'd a game about bluffing and spotting inconsistencies. Which some people will naturally be good at lying and some won't, but in essence just don't be afraid to ask clarifying questions or put yourself out there if you think you've found an important clue and want to discuss it. I'm admittedly bad at social deduction games myself, so someone else might have better advice.
But yeah, don't go in expecting to have to put on a completely new facade just to play, just joining in and trying your best as you are will usually be enough.
>>95963165Also, to briefly touch on the other bits,
>ClueClue, or Cluedo, is a board game where you're doing something similar to a social deduction game, but the crime's mastermind/weapon/location are initially unknown and all separate pieces of info placed onto cards that you need to collect while traveling around the board. The goal is to deduce who's the criminal based on deductive reasoning garnered from the clues gathered by the cards. Social games like ใพใ ใฟใ would be a lot more free-form than that.
> Just have to know the difference between in-character and out of character thinking processesGiven that you'll choose or be assigned a role inside the scenario, it just means that you need to keep in mind the roles of the other people around the table don't reflect their real-life selves to a T. Like someone who's assigned the role of killer that lies to you isn't doing it to be malicious, he's just following the rules of the game.
>>95962812>>95962846>>95962905>>95963165>>95963181...what?
Unless you're going on about that one Devilman game, but how does this relate to JTRPGs?
>>95963202Looks like they're talking about something that translates to "Madamis", which is the moon rune equivalent of "murder mystery". Which I'd gathered by making a quick glance at a bunch of madamis scenarios and comparing it to Jubensha, is pretty much a more scripted version of Mafia they play over in Japan. So I tried my best to answer, unless Mafia is no longer considered /tg/

>>95914593>most of the pages are bullshit data tables.Have you read the adnd dungeon master's guide? No? It's mostly very abstruse tables. Tables on tables on tables on tables. Here's how many days you have to search to find a thief of a certain level. Here's how much you have to pay these types of civilians for their services as a part of your warband, etc.
Does 5e even have reference tables for people to use?
>newer games feel like they're "designed" first, and written afterYou're at least correct about this.
1e and 2e dnd (2e dnd is here mostly by technicality, because it's by and large the same rules, even if there was massive shift away from play as neutrally interacting with a world. "Plot" reigns supreme in official material during TSR's declining years) were largely a series of tables meant to give concrete answers to problems to cut zines out of having a say in what made up the game. They were not actual descriptions of how to play, but instead a series of suggestions at how to play and what would be an appropriate ruling to give players. They're rabbinical commentary to guide a judge on what fair arbitration would be.
It's well known that Gygax did not actually run the ADnD rules, after all.

OVA is a game that does not count as a JTRPG.
Can I have a quick rundown on Kamigakari? looks crunchy on a quick skim
>>96049017well, here's Notepad's video on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycLYCA-NHac
a few correction is that the publishing company actually fulfilled their objective despite having a bunch of hiccups. It's unknown if they plan on the rest of the supplements, but there is fan-translations of them.
whats a good time to play for first timers on jtrpgs? kamigakari, double cross, or tenra basho zero? or something else?
my group plays dnd so i think sword world is out for the first option for being similar.
>>96052161what do you mean similar?
there's a bunch of differences between 5e and Sword World!
or is it they think "oh, orthodox fantasy setting with a smidge of magitech, it's the same as D&D!" Clearly they're not to brilliant, are they?
but for those options, I'ld go for Double Cross. with Ryuutama and Kamigakari being my second options.
>>96052238>or is it they think "oh, orthodox fantasy setting with a smidge of magitech, it's the same as D&D!" Clearly they're not to brilliant, are they?pretty much this.
>RyuutamaI never done a Oregon Trail campaign before. I would like to try that regardless despite possibly falling on my face
>>96052161Shin Megami Tensei Devil City Tokyo 200X will be an urban (circa 2000's) occult mystery/action game depending on how you run it if you want something with lots of crunch, stats, and options.
Stellar Knights is good if you're all onboard with roleplaying your favorite character tropes/interactions with a sweet combat puzzle to capstone a session, and it doesn't require much commitment (easy to pick up, run, and decide if you want to keep going or not)
The real answer though is every TRPG is designed to be beginner friendly, so pick one based on theme, setting, or book length.
>>96053845Ryuutama is very much beginner-friendly.
oh, Kickstarter for LionWing's Wares Blade is active.
>>96053845>>96052161>The real answer though is every TRPG is designed to be beginner friendly, so pick one based on theme, setting, or book length. The translated books are either very verbose for something really simple (Kamigakari, never read the fantranslation though), or bombards everything at once and/or weirdly formatted (Double Cross doing all of these). TBZ might scare people with the 400+ pages when it works like smashing Sword World's books into one big book.
Out of his options, especially with his group being from DnD to not scare them, Ryuutama is the easiest to chew through. And then maybe TBZ.
I'll also toss in Dracurouge and Ventangle.

The timing of the journey checks are not properly explained
You're supposed to roll in the morning when you wake up. Ok. Fine
Then travel and direction checks. When do you do this?
At the beginning of the day after the first check? Or at the end of the day before the camping check?
If you do them first of the day, you'll know how good or bad the travel is supposed to be and you can describe what happens and events through the day. BUT you have effects on health and status before the events of the day happen at all. It make little sense waking up, rolling and suddenly be reduced to half HP on a bad roll.
If you do them before camping, they have little impact. You're about to go to bed. You can make up some events to justify the loss of HP due a bad roll but you're about to rest.
Orientation roll I think should be a hidden roll. If it comes a fumble and you go back to the starting point, you don't want your players to know until the time to search for a camping spot

I think that the staplebounds should hold up well to play. Don't know why more of them aren't sewn they look alot nicer.
>>96098431The cores are quite chunky anyway
I am loving the Goblin Slayer TTRPG book. it's so fucking ez pz to read. and this is a book japanese guys are writing in NOT their first language. it's fucking GENIUS set out. so fucking easy to understand and comprehend.
Just finished reading the first part of the Lodoss replay, the one with Parn and gang. It was pretty kino, looking forward to reading the actual novels to see it fleshed out.
This is a little adjacent to JTRPGs but do you all know whereโs the main place to go to for JTRPG replays in English? Interested in checking out other stuff besides Lodoss/Sword World.
>>96113229as far as is known, the currently translated replays are the two original Lodoss replays that use BECMI, the first three Sword World RPG replays, a couple of Sword World 2.0 and 2.5 replays, and I think two or so CoC replays.
also a Nechronica replay.
There isn't really a major hub for JTRPGs, though. You'ld probably just find something here and there.
>>96110360group SNE Quallity, that.
I'm gonna study Japanese in Japan for a year starting in a few months. I've been really into mechs lately, what's the go to mecha game over there?
>>96113466Thanks for the info! Then I guess the pastebin in the OP covers pretty much everything non-Lodoss/Sword World already. Shame they donโt get much attention but understandable since itโs pretty niche.

>>96121419Speaking of Replays...
Rock N' Role Vol.2 has been translated!
>>96113229The novels aren't as good as the replays somehow, but still really decent. Enjoyed my time with them.
>>96121623well, if it's a thing to know the Grey Witch novel is actually based on the 4th Lodoss replay. the first two (Parn's and Shiris' Parties) used BECMI, but after the rights issues with TSR, for the 3rd campaign, they used their sorta homebrew system that would be published in the Lodoss Companions, the system was used for the 3rd campaign (Spark's party), and then they decided to re-do the first two campaigns using the new system, so the 4th campaign was just a redux of the 1st campaign, but with the new system. So there was a bit of changes between the two systems, and also Mizuno shipping Parn and Deed's characters.
Are the raws for the AC6 game out there?
>>96123898Technically yes? You'ld have to buy it off of Bookwalker, though.
>>96120174I think it might be an even split of Metallic Guardian, Embryo Machine, and Battletech, with AC6 being the new thing.
>>96120174I looked at the AC6 sample and it looked very daunting, my Japanese isn't ready to read an RPG manual and feeding it to chatgpt would defeat the point. Hopefully I can find someone to explain the system in simple terms
>>96137033Despite it being shown as daunting, AC6 is well... ...not really much. The fact the scenario included REQUIRES 3 PCs, or if it's one player, controlling 3 ACs simultaneously. But yeah, Embryo Machine should be easier to learn.
>>96020657they should really translate the messian spellcasting prestige class as 'magi' and not 'magus' . I think that mistranslated is an artifact from the big machine translated spreadsheet. These are meant to evoke Gaspar, Melichor and Balthazar, the three kings who followed the eastern star to see Christ's birth
Wheres the original Source book/ other supplements?
>>96143990>class as 'magi' and not 'magus'Magi is the plural version of magus, you wouldn't call one guy a magi
>>96144020yes I would. imagine a wizard only having one soul.
I generally only use the single tense for the tarot.
>>96144050Would you call a man a men then?
>>96143990bold talk, but you are incorrect. while magi might work, magus is in no way a mistranslation. they have also gone by adept, but technically a different unit.

>>96145158best not to argue with semantics like this.
>>96151380He's not arguing semantics, he was making a factual statement.
It should be obvious that the best way to translate ใกใคใฌใน (meigasu) is 'Magus'. It's not a semantic issue, it's a common sense issue.
Not sure is this is the right place to post this but any good systems for Sentai/Kamen rider?
>>96158168officially, I think there's Convictior Drive, but I did hear of a semi-official Kamen Rider TTRPG.
>>96103519yes, they are. and they just announced a big all-in-one core book!
It was initially gonna be printed without any monster data or a pre-made scenario, but the backer bonus added the monster data back in AND it'll have a unique scenario!
>>96162933I would be more interested on this if there wasn't an english release being hinted at this week:
> Founder and president of Group SNE mentions an official translation being announced this week.> Confirms the information will be found on the next GM Warlock Magazine releasing on 7/30, so a proper announcement should be before then.> Also says he was invited to a overseas event yesterday (Gen Con next week? could be nothing)I just hope its an actual english release and not just the italian version announced again by the Fabula Ultima publisher.
whyja look at that, the guy who was making a Nechronica theme'd Marathon WAD put it up.

>>96163101I just hope it means the fan translations will continue...
>>96163101An official English release of Sword World could be big. It's always been assumed that Group SNE never directly acknowledged the fan translation because it would, in some capacity, imply they and Sword World are willing to go toe-to-toe with Dungeons & Dragons itself, and that's a fight they didn't want to have. With D&D floundering right now and more direct alternatives hitting the market, maybe they've decided now is the time for SW to go truly international.
>This is Sword World, the #1 domestic TRPG in Japan and the home of the legendary Lodoss War series.Paired with the new SW 2.5 Deluxe Corebook that combines all three cores into one (
>>96162933,
>>96171328), and they might have a shot.
>>96171350i hope they do, NuDnD deserves to be killed, put out of DnD players misery, and sworld world, built off of ADnD, OG DnD, deserves to take the crown.
>>96171350Sword World would be better with Amano art.
>>96172982look at Sword World RPG (original version) for said art.
>>96171350I have been saying that it could be huge for a while. Well, now that we do have a sizable fanbase, and word is going around that an actual english release is in the cards, we might get Sword World to be a new fantasy mainstay.
Any amount of DnD players who stop playing dnd is a big win in my book.
