TQ: Older games or Newer games?
Anonymous No.95914593 [Report] >>96008884
>>95914300 (OP)
>TQ
Older games are secret gems in the rough, from a more pure time where people were breaking into a budding industry and everyone was new & shit a trpg design, but did their best. Could be I've just grown tired of middle-modern systems like 3.5e to 5e and indie slop, but older western AND japanese trpgs are proving to have a lot of novelty to me.

Maybe I'm jaded, but newer games feel like they're "designed" first, and written after. Could just be the prevalence of 300 page "rules lite" games, where most of the pages are bullshit data tables. I enjoy lots of data and options, but it feels stupid when slapped onto a 2, 3, 4 "stat" system with simple dice resolution.
That said, there's plenty of newer JTPRG games (say, after 2018 as a random cutoff date) that are "pretty neat" and feel like a whole complete package, rather than just a board game with extra words added to the manual.

Don't expect any fancy new Sword World 2.5 stuff anytime soon, aside from the Core Rulebook Deluxe and maybe the Eusiz book.

because of a sudden churn of interest, there'll be a bunch of Sword World RPG related content from the Kobold going forward.

With the potentiality of translations of the other four Forcelian TTRPGs.

Repeating again from the previous thread, the 1st scenario collection for Dragon Half TRPG was translated a smidge ago. For the second scenario collection, the translator wants Five play reports as "Payment" before he translates it.

Other then that, for the Ninja Slayer TRPG demo.

When it comes to Mektons, IMHO, the combats are definitely faster and less fiddly for both. However, once you expand into the Technical Manuals (separate books) the design process can become very fiddly because you can absolutely nail down what you imagine for the mecha with the system.

Both Mekton II and Mekton Zeta play equally well, but the mecha in II are more fragile than the same size mecha in Zeta. Zeta also has base rules for Roadstrikers, Mektons, and Starships in the main book while II has them in three separate books. Overall, it will depend on what you use it for, but the II core rules is a more self contained ruleset while the Zeta core rules is a more versatile ruleset.

If you are introducing new players to the system, Mekton II may be preferable to Mekton Zeta because it is more self contained and thus easier to grasp.

Unless you’re talking about “Jubensha” or doing a murder mystery dinner party, you might want to get the exact name of the game, since “murder mystery” is more of a literary genre. But presuming you mean your friends roped you into a game where you’re detectives solving a murder case, just treat it like a game of Clue. Take notes, ask questions, and generally have a pulse.

>I literally cannot RP, everything ends up monotone as fuck
Shouldn’t be a problem unless you’re being demanded to affect an accent or something. Got plenty of friends who just talk I’m their normal voice for this stuf. Just have to know the difference between in-character and out of character thinking processes.

Okay, so bad news, this is legitimately the first time I've heard of it as a westerner
But good news, this looks like part of a general group of game category called "social deduction" games, like what we call Mafia or Werewolf.
In a sense, it's two games in one. You'd all be secretly assigned a role at the start as ether an investigator or a killer role, each with competing interests. The investigators have to pick out which one among them is the killer pretending to be the investigator by investigating clues and interrogating each other, and the killer has to lie and make false accusations on other investigators to convince the other investigators someone else is the killer.

Giving a specific tip isn't going to be easy just cause each scenario presented will be different, and looking at all the scenarios from what I'm googling up a lot of these scenarios get elaborate to the point of basically being an entire script, but in essence it'd a game about bluffing and spotting inconsistencies. Which some people will naturally be good at lying and some won't, but in essence just don't be afraid to ask clarifying questions or put yourself out there if you think you've found an important clue and want to discuss it. I'm admittedly bad at social deduction games myself, so someone else might have better advice.

But yeah, don't go in expecting to have to put on a completely new facade just to play, just joining in and trying your best as you are will usually be enough.
Anonymous No.95963181 [Report] >>95963202 >>95963521
>>95963165
Also, to briefly touch on the other bits,
>Clue
Clue, or Cluedo, is a board game where you're doing something similar to a social deduction game, but the crime's mastermind/weapon/location are initially unknown and all separate pieces of info placed onto cards that you need to collect while traveling around the board. The goal is to deduce who's the criminal based on deductive reasoning garnered from the clues gathered by the cards. Social games like まだみす would be a lot more free-form than that.

> Just have to know the difference between in-character and out of character thinking processes
Given that you'll choose or be assigned a role inside the scenario, it just means that you need to keep in mind the roles of the other people around the table don't reflect their real-life selves to a T. Like someone who's assigned the role of killer that lies to you isn't doing it to be malicious, he's just following the rules of the game.

Looks like they're talking about something that translates to "Madamis", which is the moon rune equivalent of "murder mystery". Which I'd gathered by making a quick glance at a bunch of madamis scenarios and comparing it to Jubensha, is pretty much a more scripted version of Mafia they play over in Japan. So I tried my best to answer, unless Mafia is no longer considered /tg/

>most of the pages are bullshit data tables.
Have you read the adnd dungeon master's guide? No? It's mostly very abstruse tables. Tables on tables on tables on tables. Here's how many days you have to search to find a thief of a certain level. Here's how much you have to pay these types of civilians for their services as a part of your warband, etc.
Does 5e even have reference tables for people to use?

>newer games feel like they're "designed" first, and written after
You're at least correct about this.

1e and 2e dnd (2e dnd is here mostly by technicality, because it's by and large the same rules, even if there was massive shift away from play as neutrally interacting with a world. "Plot" reigns supreme in official material during TSR's declining years) were largely a series of tables meant to give concrete answers to problems to cut zines out of having a say in what made up the game. They were not actual descriptions of how to play, but instead a series of suggestions at how to play and what would be an appropriate ruling to give players. They're rabbinical commentary to guide a judge on what fair arbitration would be.
It's well known that Gygax did not actually run the ADnD rules, after all.

Anyways, you're a retarded faggot who can't read LOL

Shin Megami Tensei Devil City Tokyo 200X will be an urban (circa 2000's) occult mystery/action game depending on how you run it if you want something with lots of crunch, stats, and options.

Stellar Knights is good if you're all onboard with roleplaying your favorite character tropes/interactions with a sweet combat puzzle to capstone a session, and it doesn't require much commitment (easy to pick up, run, and decide if you want to keep going or not)

The real answer though is every TRPG is designed to be beginner friendly, so pick one based on theme, setting, or book length.

The translated books are either very verbose for something really simple (Kamigakari, never read the fantranslation though), or bombards everything at once and/or weirdly formatted (Double Cross doing all of these). TBZ might scare people with the 400+ pages when it works like smashing Sword World's books into one big book.
Out of his options, especially with his group being from DnD to not scare them, Ryuutama is the easiest to chew through. And then maybe TBZ.
I'll also toss in Dracurouge and Ventangle.

The timing of the journey checks are not properly explained
You're supposed to roll in the morning when you wake up. Ok. Fine
Then travel and direction checks. When do you do this?
At the beginning of the day after the first check? Or at the end of the day before the camping check?
If you do them first of the day, you'll know how good or bad the travel is supposed to be and you can describe what happens and events through the day. BUT you have effects on health and status before the events of the day happen at all. It make little sense waking up, rolling and suddenly be reduced to half HP on a bad roll.
If you do them before camping, they have little impact. You're about to go to bed. You can make up some events to justify the loss of HP due a bad roll but you're about to rest.
Orientation roll I think should be a hidden roll. If it comes a fumble and you go back to the starting point, you don't want your players to know until the time to search for a camping spot

So there was a bit of changes between the two systems, and also Mizuno shipping Parn and Deed's characters.

An official English release of Sword World could be big. It's always been assumed that Group SNE never directly acknowledged the fan translation because it would, in some capacity, imply they and Sword World are willing to go toe-to-toe with Dungeons & Dragons itself, and that's a fight they didn't want to have. With D&D floundering right now and more direct alternatives hitting the market, maybe they've decided now is the time for SW to go truly international.

This is absolutely not the tack you want to take. Lodoss has no cultural cachet among the western public and the number of weebs who'd be enticed by Thing, Japan is not going to get you massive momentum. You need a hook for Joe Public that isn't country he doesn't care about or franchise he's never heard of.

But that's the whole story of the system. Sword World was born in 1989 because Record of Lodoss War needed a rules base after abandoning D&D. And so, for over 35 years, Sword World has been Japan's go-to domestic alternative to D&D, it and Lodoss War being one of the defining and foundational building blocks of Japanese-flavored western fantasy. What else is there to shill? That the system runs on nothing but 2d6 and is basically an extended exercise in multiclassing?

The mistake you're making is thinking of this as simply Sword World vs 5e (2024 revision). You're also competing with every other edition of D&D, because they're all available on DTRPG (even original 5e via those Roll20 plugins) and people discover them via their dad's books. And you're technically also up against Pathfinder and 13th Age, since they're also derivatives of older versions of D&D, especially Pathfinder with its catering to buildfagging.
Not to mention that if you're trying to sell it as "based on classic AD&D" you're also going to get lumped in with all of the OSR games.

Also AD&D isn't OG D&D, that's OD&D.

Who are you going to play with? Native speakers? TTRPGs take long enough without it being slowed down by having someone there with a vocabulary comparable to an infant, so you are unlikely to be an appreciated precense at the table. Even if you have JLPT N1, that isn't remotely close to what you'd need to be able to play a TTRPG without significantly delaying the progress of the game.

You'd need to find a bunch of language learners like yourself who want, as you do, to challenge themselves by playing in Japanese.

Machine translation is generally adequate at dry rules text and setting information so long as you don't give it too much at once and supervise it to keep the pronouns, paragraph tense etc. in line.
It'll fumble with speech and slang terms, though.

Another Update:
>If they do continue translating 2.5, they will do so under embargo. That means that they will only be available for the people that have proof of purchase of the original copy of the book.
>They won't translate everything new from 2.5, just the stuff they consider interesting.
>2.5 Core Rule Books will be under embargo after the official release
>Terms will be updated to match the official translation, so the fan-translated books can still be used.

Sort of what anyone should have been expecting for if an official release was to be coming, any official translators would likely be ready to sue the shit out of the fan ones as soon as the licensing happens after all, though them saying they won't panic wipe the 2.5s they already translated and will keep working on 2.0 and 1.0 is more than I'd have expected these days.
I'm sure that we'll still end up getting PDFs of the official versions in a pirate-able way the same as we do for anything for those of us wanting to check quality before paying any money to the official licenser, and if they're bad just to avoid giving them money at all, of course.

As someone on the "inside", I can tell you that the publisher for the english version hopes for coexistence with the fan translation.
The hope for both sides is that new releases keep getting the fan translation treatment, while Sword Worlds official release in the west becomes a success so that more material comes out in an official capacity. Ideally, of course, the whole library is eventually released in english, though that of course is pretty far fetched.

Naturally this kind of necessitates a delicate approach, but I think the compromise everyone arrived at is suitable.
The main obstacle is really the japanese side. Where Group SNE feigns ignorance (seemingly content and happy with there being any sort of interest in sword world), Kadokawa remains the real elephant in the room. Everyone hopes that they chill and don't throw any cease and desist but you never know with big corporate entities.

Read your own posts you dumb nigger. The usefulness of the machine translation comes down to the skill of the operator, which can be enhanced by learning from the experience of others.
Given you can't even recall what you've written yourself, I shouldn't think you'll be able to contribute no matter how detailed the instructions you're given are.

there will most likely be years between a book releasing in japan and the official english release, so I mean you are not wrong that you'd have to buy the book twice in effect, but i mean its your choice at the end of the day.
Do you want to get the translation early?
Then buy the japanese release.
Do you want to support the official release?
Buy the official release.

The translation team has since the very beginning taken the stance that they would much rather have people support the official release, that the fan translation only happened because there was no official english release.
An official english release puts them in a very weird position where they want to continue bringing people the latest books but that also risks the whole translation project getting nuked.
So this is why its like this.

It also only affects any future books that get released in japan.
As stated previously though, the books that are already up (which are a lot) will stay up. You can still get them for free until an english version releases, they will also continue to be updated if errors are found.
They will not be taken into indefinite embargo until an english book releases.
So when Magus Arts releases officially in english, that will go in the vault.
If you bought an english copy of Magus Arts, you get access to the fan translation too.
That is the idea, at the very least.
SW2.0 and 1.0 content will also stay available indefinitely, so like I said, this only really affects anything released/translated after yesterday.
If they drop a new cool supplement in japan, you may or may not wish to purchase it on bookwalker or something, maybe grab it on sale later. Thats when I personally got most of my japanese rpg books anyways.
I can have a chat with the translation guys to see about any currently in progress translations.
Other then that, it's what it is.
Download the whole translated library in any case, nobody can take those away from you.

as far as it seems, they're putting specific titles under special embargo as/if they receive official localization. like when the eng loc book(s) come out, the core rules fan PDFs will be delisted in solidarity. i think.
supplements yet to receive official loc will stay available (BUT not new releases?) and even get their terms revised to match the official ones.
the reason why you'd do that is because theres no way in hell the official localization effort is going to penetrate the hudge amount of supplements, not to mention replays, any time soon.

>hoping
if what's available now is acceptable, then that should answer the question. i know it wasn't your post and im nta eiter, but i'd say 99 to 100% of fan translated jtrpgs in the last 10 years are primarily based on machine or AI translation.

>>96192815
the SW fan translators also don't circulate or allow raws posted on tehir discord, so you gotta buy them outside of what's on the trove. especially since they dothat whole embargo thing, most people do not know how to rip from BW or spread them around.
most people just wait on the fan TL and/or buy for their embargo access. most untranslated stuff is replays or such for the older versions anyway, which will still probably be getting fan translated at some point.
Anonymous No.96197257 [Report] >>96197306

The official release is done from the ground up, with the fan translation team in an advisory role. So it may take a while till everything is out, understandably.
>>96197178
I can't say too much, my hands are tied in that regard.
Obviously the core books will be coming soon enough, after it is officially unveiled.
I know the fan translation team will be focusing on SW2.0 content for now, but is planning on taking on any major supplement that releases in the future, as long as people seem interested.
One 2.5 region book I know is actively being worked on, as well as one minor supplement is being considered.
To note, of course, is that most of the 2.5 books out currently are also translated, so there isn't much left on the 2.5 front to translate for the fan translation team.

Kadokawa is specifically the reason that I'm pleasantly surprised about the no panic wipe of the existing translations. Kadokawa is litigious enough that some people would shred their entire project and burn the online identities they used to work on said project, so seeing the fan translation take a more measured approach instead of panicking is nice.

Here is their current stance about the situation (from the Kobold himself):
> Translations will remain free as they are rn.
> As soon as the official books gets released they will put the equivalent into permanent embargo. You would need the book on any language to get the fan translation.
> New SW2.5 translations will be in embargo forever. You will have to buy the Japanese books to get those translations.
> All new SW2.5 translations will have a free public PDF previews, same pages as in bookwalker app. Usually first 10-30 pages (8%). So you can check those, look at the table of context and see if you want to get it. The last page shows how to get the full translation
Also they will still work on 2.0 and SW RPG.

the starter boxes are different. for the "Water" box, it's a scenario based in the city of Harves in the Burlight Region, the Guild Box is similar, but takes you to various other areas in around Harves, it also expands on the previous two boxes by adding higher level versions of their starter box pregens.

I unfortunatly don't know much about the "Build" box, but the "Feast" box is set in around Kingsfall in the Dorden region, where the goal of the sorta mini campaign is gathering ingredients for a magnificent feast.
