IGN style review. It's Korean. I'm not sure if Nflx wanted W audiences to watch this show cause they actually did a dub with good audio and actors.
I just watched the first 20 mins, the rest tmr. We know nflx cares more about ratings popularity than quality. If you're interested then watch soon and give it a thumb rating after finishing it, not before watching or Netflix servers might suspect a bot farm by BY4M Studio. I don't want a sequel but remember Netflix didn't originally make it's alg push SG to us. Moving back to Netflix's intentions on the W, the dub didn't seem bad at all I'm not meatriding I swear. Plus it's not even western media and BY4M put a decent budget with really good lighting and camera work.
Now when I watch the whole thing I think my main gripe will be the bizarre decision to translate with no clear audience in mind. The dubs say "atari" using Japanese terms like we do but I'm pretty sure I heard a split with Korean terms. The only people who would benefit from the latter are Koreans learning English, and it would be cheap to replace the words. If you are on the English speaking reddit community for go (r/baduk ironic name) you know they really care about their media representation I actually think Netflix will soon read the critiques and swap out the words with the same cast, I think the sub is chill and if they make this happen there won't be death threats. Also outside of understanability I dislike the fact that they called the Meijins "Masters" instead of "Meijin" or what I contrastingly wouldn't mind "Myeongin". Either does sound pretentious but I think we are all chess fans here and we cringe when people call GMs "chess experts" or call chess hobbyists "chess fans" :). A bit of prestige for a Pro's dedication in the dub isn't much work. Also relating to Nx's intentions you have to search "The Match" to the last letter to find it (unless you are a Koreaboo freak); hence I am split on whether Nx wanted a W audience or not
