keep on the borderlands features a more sandbox like approach, players all stay at their "Homebase" are given a vague goal, clear the caves of chaos, and can explore the region at their leisure
most of the POIs you can visit arent even directly related to the caves of chaos, they are just fun encounters
it also encourages you to signpost dangers within the cave via talking to the denizens of the keep, the list of rumours helps here
its a good introduction to non-linear adventures and the rhythm of your typical DnD game
its also deliberately short on any proper nouns of any kind, further encouraging a DM to get used to naming people as you see fit
its certainly a very good choice for learning how to play campaigns that arent just one giant corridor of loot and monsters
