Is B2: Keep on the Borderlands a good starting adventure? I mean both back when it was included with basic, and the upcoming 2024 starter set

OP here, are you even sure that the new artwork looks any worse than vintage artworks? Also, the topic how do you feel about Keep on the Borderlands as a starting adventure?

Looks like the artist tried to give him/her/them/it a bronze age aesthetic but didn't know how to do that. The cone looks like a small version of pic related and the "leather armor" looks like a motorcycle jacket with short sleeves. fuck knows what the clothing underneath is supposed to be.

>the topic how do you feel about Keep on the Borderlands as a starting adventure?
unlike B1: into the unknown, which is a pure dungeon crawl
keep on the borderlands features a more sandbox like approach, players all stay at their "Homebase" are given a vague goal, clear the caves of chaos, and can explore the region at their leisure
most of the POIs you can visit arent even directly related to the caves of chaos, they are just fun encounters
it also encourages you to signpost dangers within the cave via talking to the denizens of the keep, the list of rumours helps here

its a good introduction to non-linear adventures and the rhythm of your typical DnD game
its also deliberately short on any proper nouns of any kind, further encouraging a DM to get used to naming people as you see fit

its certainly a very good choice for learning how to play campaigns that arent just one giant corridor of loot and monsters

The original is great. Going by the Goodman 5e version of it I imagine the starter set version will be caca.

>>95941328
That middle one is incredible and if they made a rule to just reuse it for every starter set instead of ordering new art it would be an unambiguous, objective improvement.

sounds like WotC made a good decision in incorporating this adventure into the starter set. from what I've heard about it, it encourages every player to step in as DM eventually. it also has rules for running games with multiple DM's

For Basic and AD&D 1E sure.
Doubt it for 5E considering it's a sandbox locale.

DM'ed the updated 5e version by Goodman Games a few years ago and it felt very bare bones, also the book is formatted terribly for actual play. The castle town area that the players are supposed to spend their downtime in isn't very developed, you'll have to come up with a ton of names for npcs and motivations for players to interact with them as the book provides neither. The maps are cool if you dig the retro pure dungeon crawler vibe, but you will have to put some loot into them that makes exploration more worthwhile. Honestly it was a fun campaign for me and my group but the module is borderline unplayable as provided and it took a lot of work to actually make it interesting as a backdrop for dungeon crawling, nearly as much as making a campaign from scratch.

This thing is going to be a disaster. Shame, because a 5E Keep on the Borderlands would have been an amazing thing to remind all the critical retards that this thing is supposed to be a game.

that is how the original adventure went
the idea was for DMs to invent all of those themselves

man I've come to really dislike this 'unfinished' digital look. Like, that wrap/cape/whatever around the legs just fucking scribbles of color. Pic doesn't even have the decency of being as interesting as impressionism.

Not exactly. Impressionism is based around the idea of catching the 'essence' of a moment, usually by focusing on light and color. Characterized by visible brush strokes. Pic related.
OP image just looks unfinished to me, since it's got areas of full detail (like the face/dragon) and areas that are just a couple lazy-looking digital strokes that lack the character of a physical brush.

What I mean:
While areas like the face and the dragon's head are rendered in much finer detail, smaller brush strokes, and blended together more completely, bits like the circled area are done in a few large strokes that are left unrendered- it works for the background, because that's not too dissimilar to how we see things that are far away (just blobs of color). I think it doesn't work well for a foreground element, because it clashes with the more defined areas that is sits next to. It looks like the beginning phase of the render- a sketch of color to establish form and value- so that's why I say it looks unfinished to me.
>>95950778
I don't like it. All the above is my explanation as to why I don't like it: it looks unfinished *to me*. I'm not trying to prove it's bad, I'm trying to explain why *I* don't like it. You can like it all you want, I don't care.
