Is there an RPG that's a good fit for the kind of weird, surreal tv cartoons that were popular in the 2010s, like Gravity Falls, The Owl House, Amphibia, or Inside Job?

These are a kind of kid-centered, light-hearted mystery shows with overlays of magical realism, cosmic horror and the occult.

All I could think of were Absurdia and Public Access, or maybe Unknown Armies with kids.

Some of those shows are quite notable for not being popular, but also they are wildly different genres. Either way, Kids on Bikes would probably suit Gravity Falls just fine.

Monster of the Week is cute but more geared towards 90s shows such as Buffy. IIRC Adventure Time is based on a D&D campaign, so I'd say any vanilla system where the GM goes for that kind of tone is good to go. And as always,

BRP, and it's assocaited systems, can run almost anything. Savage worlds is good this too. You might even have some luck using a year zeor engine game other than the obvious ones with a little reflavoring.

Thereโ€™s an RPG called Academagia, not to be confused with the computer game of the same name, that I hear can be used for The Owl House with some homebrewing. Donโ€™t quote me on that though, and Iโ€™m not sure if there are other systems that might work better, if youโ€™ve got any systems that havenโ€™t been mentioned here yet Iโ€™d be happy to hear them.

Kids on Bikes is set in small town America before cellphones and internet with the option for the strangeness of Scooby-Doo, The Goonies, light hearted stuff.
You can turn it up and grim, such as 'It', Stand by Me, Stranger Things
It's my favorite game to date.

Kids on Brooms is geared toward magical stuffs and fantasy like Harry Potter or Percy Jackson.
I don't have this game nor was I ever an HP fan so I can't give you any information other than kids and magical shenanigans.

There's a third book, Teens in Space which is more akin to the academy episodes of Star Trek:TNG/DS9 or Lost in Space.
Young people's space faring and science fiction.

>what do you like most?
The game is free form. The players pick "classes" based on TV movie tropes
>bully
>popular kid
>line weirdo
The players flesh out the town by picking the year, towns name, notable industries, landmarks et al.
I'm free to use all or none of it.
If a story goes sideways that's OK. The players are kids/teens seeking fun and adventure.
All I have to sweat are the mechanics

Much as I hate to say it, my best idea for The Owl House right now is a D&D homebrew. I think that I heard somewhere that the Covens in The Owl House tie roughly to the schools of magic in D&D; Abomination magic could great refluffed necromancy, Bard magic is self-explanatory, etc. Please tell me that you have something better that might work that hasnโ€™t been mentioned yet, having no better ideas than 5e is almost physically painful to me.

how long have you kept the same adventure?
I tried running a campaign and it stopped after half a year of weekly sessions because of real life stuff, they seemed to be enjoying it, but pretty quickly I started feeling die results didn't really correlate to how the archetypes were supposed to go. The d20s had the potential of huge success, it rarely happened. The d4s consistently rolled better than the d6s, and the difference between either wasn't all that noticeable. The swinginess made them slowly mutate out of their archetypes because they only gave them chances of success, but nothing reliable to keep them in archetype.

Assuming that you didn't mean Kids on Broom, I can help with KoBk.

If you have the modules you will notice the lack of 'Win Conditions' on the rumors. This perplexed me until I realized that it's up to the players how to close out the story. Even if it's not what you want.

Set the bar for any general challenges lower than you think. Give the players the psychological boost of smashing a challenge, But not too many that they can't bank up Challenge Points. Player specific challenges are ok to be kept difficult. The reason being, Such tasks are the players wheelhouse. It's their shot at screen time.

Have or give an out when a main plot challenge fails.
>Kids needed to get past a security door.
>old school manual numeric lock requires a 4 digit code
>Kids fail the first check and didn't notice that the 4 most used keys show wear
>one kid searches the security officers desk and finds a worn copy of company protocols and procedures
>security officer wrote the code on the inside of the cover of company book
Work back to the main plot

While a part of the setting, it's just a "part" of it. In general unknown armies is good for running modern age, "weird" games. It would make a decent X-files agents game, for example.

It's a got a bunch of neat magic systems revolving around real-world magical traditions + post-modern bullshit magic like pornomancy, fast food, drunk mages, and money-magic. Also a high-lethality combat system so you really want to avoid combat and rely on your smarts, wits and strange spell rituals you cobbled together from McDonald's burger shells and Coke bottles. Never seen any other RPG offer anything as weird.

They should have some kind of mechanics to replicate the feeling of whimsy, exploration, and danger-but-not-fatal feeling that permeates them. Skills and feats should be limited to things that kids could mostly do. So no neurosurgeons or Navy SEALS. The magic should be weirder and more niche than typical D&D spells, with extreme specialization and complex rituals that have to be learned.
