I'm gonna need someone to explain to me what's so offensively "non-warhammer" about the Cathay minis, because I really fail to see it. It can't be that it isn't grim enough, because that would disqualify the entire High Elf race, and like 90% of Dwarf and Bretonnia units; and it can't be that it's asian inspired, because that's the whole fucking point of introducing a race from the other side of the world with its own culture.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not particularly happy about the jade warriors. I was hoping for MIng era brigandine, but the armors not being to my liking doesn't make it not-Warhammer. Lacking any convincing reasoning, I can't help but think this is nothing more than the second coming of the Tau seethe when they first came out. The complaints sure seem similar.

This is also 99% of modern GW sculpts.
Sure they are pretty point as far as historical Chinese armors, especially compared to the travesty of the new Empire stuff. But there is a lot more to sculpting miniatures than covering mnis with drybrush and contrast friendly texture.

The truth of the matter is this: The reason they (the Slavs) are actively shitting on the Fantasy Chinks is because they're angry that Cathay gets the honor of becoming the first newest official Warhammer Fantasy army to come out in over 20 years. You'd be logging around stolen, mismatched and scrapped off looted trash if it wasn't finished with dark opaque hues, and painted over or covered in other decoration, sometimes textiles.

Polished pieces were never a fucking thing, a field piece won't survive a month of campaign when polished without visibly rusting.
Polishing armor is a georgian-victorian aesthetic choice, which destroyed the original black or russet finish of the vast majority of pieces.
That black finish is iron oxide, /the spanish treatment/ was more expensive than the form of finish that turned them russet.

I'd hazard a guess that population replenishment isn't a threat to Cathay, and the maths works out that the losses to female population from war are less than if they didn't call upon them to be soldiers to begin with. Warhammer humans are built different and are suffused by the winds of magic, so strength differences can be assumed as minimal. S3 goes from goblin to horse in game terms after all. Overall I'd just say it's a stylistic choice that marks them as culturally different from traditional Old World human factions.

Tbh I dig it, the Lady of the Lake is a female war goddess who is co-opting a culture to war aginst the forces of darkness, and originally from the elven race who have near-zero sexual dimorphism. Warhammer humans aren't irl humans, imposing Medieval European gender norms on all factions not even from the same world as Europe -a world with active magic and gods- feels less interesting. Not him but I feel it is actually more important. For Skaven and Dwarfs I feel it's more an afterthought like "By the way, where are the women?". For Bretonnia it's one of the most and few concrete and telling examples of how exactly its society is retrograde. But I guess that's a "let's agree to disagree" matter.

I'm actually somewhat in favour of female Bretonnian knights, though. I'm wary of retcons but as far as I'm concerned, Warhammer is built on aesthetics, and the "Joan of Arc" aesthetic is very cool and fitting. I would just like a way to include it that can coexist with the pre-existing lore, like a special order that follows the path of Repanse or something.
