How practical is using Neverwinter Nights to run your sessions, have you ever used it?

it's essentially a 3d VTT, with all the huge prep requirements multiplied
finding models, you're shit out of luck if it's not made already
meticulously applying stats
designing 3d maps (at least it has prefab tilesets so this isn't a monumental task)

also you basically need voice, because text is too slow with real-time combat

You know what else had multiplayer early VTT? It was also totally and utterly unusable.

I use it to map-out dungeons and such, but that's about it.
My group can't be half-assed to pirate it so I can run our sessions through a server.

Absurd levels of busywork and would require you to basically completely script your games
That said RP on NWN is really fun, just a shame there aren't any good servers for hardcore any more

Base NWN is absurdly limited in class choices. I remember finding it funny how like half the players were Champions of Torm or Red Dragon Disciples, red dragons were quite busy during that time period and Torm was really popular I guess

if you don't want to pay for something or use something like roll 20 you can check out MapTool from https://www.rptools.net/toolbox/maptool/

Had somebody run a few session during covid with it, it works well once it's set up and can do anything the popular paid alternatives do.

If you want something 3d then TableTop Simulator might work as well.

Are NWN RP servers even alive in 2025? Is there still that nostalgic early 2000s RP cringe? Are there cliques of high level PCs and usual admin buddies circlejerk sessions?

Genuinely yes to all of the above, they're still going (though lesser in number)

Did people actually try to use Redemption as a ghetto VTT?

People have made modules that are remakes of PnP stuff. https://neverwintervault.org/tags/classic-pnp-conversion
