Would you rather play against sloppy, really hideous "thin your paints" type models from a guy who keeps telling you how proud he is of the paintjob and you have to hold your tongue, or unpainted plastic from a guy who just bought a new army?

If the atrocious paintjob guy is early 20s or a teenager him, being enthusastic but retarded is acceptable at that age, if 25 or over, bare plastic, being terrible and lacking self awarness is just crazy embrassing, especially when painting information is so easily accesible.

That said I would willingly play neither, I play with miniatures instead of video games because I like how decently painted models look on a table.

armchair psychology is that both require lack of introspection and self awarness and a certain kind of entitlement

So the paint is too thick? They must have changed since I was doing it in the early 90's, I was pretty proud of how my eldar Avatar turned out considering my inexperience, carefully brushing gold over the raised runes, adding splashes of blood to his sword. I should see if I can find it.

Put some paint on the palette and add water or medium so it doesn't obscure details.
Paint straight from the pot/bottle will be too think and gunk up some parts.
Happens with every brand from my experience with the exception of speed paints/contrast.

First of all decide the kind of shit you want to paint. If you want small detailed minis like warhammer, you want thin water-based acrylics. Good brands are vallejo, army painter, atom/ionic, two thin coats and AK 3rd gen. GW/Citadel has contrast paints which are actually really nice, unlike basic stuff, but they are a thing of their own you should look into.
If you want to paint vehicles and robots like gundams, you want to go straight to airbrush solvent-based paints. You can make do with the acrylics listed above but the solvent stuff is so much nicer. They self-level extremely well, dry instantly, have perfect coverage and look great. Good brands are mr. hobby, gaianotes, revell, tamiya and humbrol.

Bullshit nigga. Look at this lil robot guy I painted just now to prove you wrong. This is 100% dry atom paint in 2 coats. I didnt even have a humid brush, shit was completely dry.
Does it look awful? Absolutely. Was it a terrible experience? You bet it. But does it obscure detail (other than the obvious horrible brush strokes)? No it does not. You can even see the support points that made me bin this model and the tiny aquila detailing. It looks nothing like the citadel horror stories.

I have never once in my life played with a single unpainted miniature.
(Though I've played AGAINST gray tide more times than not)
Naturally, I prefer the guy with a poorly painted army.
You can't really tell how badly something is painted from the other side of the table anyway.

You dont paint your army you dont have a right to play. Simple as, no amount of money spend will change that. You can buy 20 armys and I still dont give a fuck about you. That one guy investing the time and making effort is more true to hobby then the hippster throwing money to gain validation.

It's not just a game. It's a hobby. There are game components, but there are also painting components and you are expected to do both.

If you want to roll dice, buy a codex or get a pdf of rules and some dice. You can roll them as much as you want at home.

I played with a guy like that all through my teens that maybe learned an imperceptible bit of brush control by accident, there was a guy with no arms on the tournament scene at the time that was a better painter
If the greytide is brand new, sure, but if there's not any effort to make a start on painting them soon, then I'd rather the guy that at least somewhat tried to paint

At a tabletop level an awfully painted army is infinite times better than a grey tide. A golden demon winning army is better than poorly painted, but the difference isn't that large at tabletop level

Always always always painted.

People should educate themselves though. It can be really fucking easy to paint tabletop standard miniatures these days. There's many more tools to do so than in the 90s.

I'm talking coloured primers and Marine Juice, with selected drybrushing and choosing the right paints out of the bottle for coverage.

A lot of the time I think the problem is people kind of run before they walk and start "experimenting" with highlights and freehand and weird basing schemes and stuff without stopping and thinking. And that's all good and well, I did it when I was 12 too.

But there are routes to painting stuff that looks pretty good.

This is my best work ever. Everything just seemed to align while i was working on him. My brush kept its point and it wasn’t too humid out. I’m really proud of the detail i was able to achieve on his face and the wires leading to good apothecary thing. Also notice how well the shading came out. I had tried a new technique here where i mixed ink glue and water.

Tournaments require 3 colour minimum, if I see someone with grey armies I know they have limited time for the hobby or some kinda ADD/autism shit keeping their brain from focusing on it but still enjoy the wargame. If it's the latter, they're probably a pretty good opponent due to the 'tism kicking in on tactics.

Shitty paint says to me "I don't give a shit about the hobby, I just like the endorophins from an easy win and was too stupid to get into a cheap hobby, so I copied a broken tournament list I have no clue how to actually drive."

Those fuckers have no grasp of tactics, worst of both worlds. I can run rings around them in terms of actual gameplay whilst they get mad their overpowered list doesn't work if used by an inbred mouthbreather who doesn't grasp the basics of target priority and board control.
