>Previous thread:>>95904716>What is /awg/?A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.
>Examples of games that qualify.A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, Judge Dredd, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, Stargrave, Sludge, Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.
>Examples of companies providing rules for alternative wargames.Atomic Mass Games, Black Site Studios, CMON, Mantic, OnePageRules,
Osprey, Para Bellum, TTCombat, Wargames Atlantic, Warlord Games...
...and many other publishers.

>>>95939340Oathmark Anon. Are you specifically trying to keep it a low fantasy kingdom? Monsters and Monster Infantry are very, very good in the game. Also for archers it is usually better to run them in groups of 5 as supporting units behind your infantry (using the fire over special rule).
Also this excel army builder is better than the one designed by Osprey: https://www.scribd.com/document/601751157/Oathmark-Kingdom-and-Army-Builder-XSLX-V3-0

I am new to the hobby so it's hard to pick a favorite, it's like a new drug.
Also someone posted Alternative Armies sale in prev thread so I looked and found some cool sci-fi lizards called Ikwen at 15mm scale and I want to grab a bunch but I need to stop myself from starting too many things.
>>95951659I don't quite get how there are another 5-6 months worth of releases for Cephalyx, given how little is left to port to MMF. I just had a thought. Why not play skirmish games like Mordheim or rangers of shadow deep with chess pieces? There is enough veriety to display various troop types, and a clear distinction in factions.
>>95955921You can if you want lad.
But for a lot of us, a large part of the appeal is the miniatures themselves. They're kind of the point in why it's miniature wargaming.
>>95955921>>95955996When I was a young un I enjoyed the wargame part the most. With standees, bits of paper, literally drawing circles with arrows, and unpainted minis. I tried painting, even poorly painted an Empire army but I never went further than base colors.
These days I spend at least 90% of my hobby time building, painting, and watching videos about painting. I'm improving a lot as time goes on but still getting there. There's something so relaxing about painting, and looking at my creations even when they're not perfect just feels nice. It's fun to come up with color schemes, watch videos about different layering techniques, people's favorite metallics etc.
You can play the games with anything but most of the fun for me is the actual modelling and painting. I prefer not to look at the painting like a chore I have to do to get to the fun part. It takes too long to be worth it if you do.
>>95955996>>95956235I think I brought it up because im traveling rn, and I cant really justify bringing space intensive and delicate miniatures. while chess, especially those travel versions, are much more convenient to put in a bag.
Today the new Fireforge Kickstarter went live. Its for a box of Sohei Monks.
>The Warrior Monks box will allow you to build 24 models with these combinations:
- up to 18 models with yumi (bows)
- up to 18 models with teppo (guns)
- up to 18 models with naginata
Parts are compatible with all the models by the Samurai Wars range, in this way you will be able to mix them together if you want.
But again, they (maybe for logistical reasons) do not offer a small pledge to get a single box.
So again, like with the Samurai, i will wait for the release.
>>95956271Standees would work better. They take up even less room and you can print whatever art you want or some places sell them. There are guides on youtube if you need.

I am impatiently waiting for Alternative Armies to change their freebie mini of the month. I want to place a small order but I dont really dig the archivist.
>>95956605He's cute. I'm waiting to see what the quality is like on their swap to resin with the model line.
>>95955921I was running an En Garde! game more like an rpg with some people and using chess pieces and a variety of npc illustration playing cards for visual reference. Each character was an index card and a playing card. Worked well for the vibe. Main difficulty was the chess pieces had magnetic bases which made them annoying to place in close proximity until I put a metal sheet under the map.
In previous thread I was asking other /awg/ regulars who are parents if they got their kids to wargaming and what games did they start with.
I speculated that hobgoblin could be a good starting game, as it has simple and consistent to-hit tables, streamlined unit profiles, no individual model removal and units are only removed at end of turn so that every unit gets to do something during a game. Other good intro games I think would OPR and merseyverse games.
>>95956916It will 100% depend on the children. For some, a colourful game like Arcadia Quest might be a better introduction.
>>95956916If you scratch out schizo measuraments Hordes of the Things should be nice for the kiddies.
>>95956916Heroscape maybe? If you're like me and have a massive stockpile of the old stuff kicking around.

>>95956916Depends on the age, necromolds are neat
>>95956916HeroQuest. Board games that are wargames are such a convenient bridge to more complex concepts, and require less adult intervention. The adult in this case plays the Evil Wizard.
We have also played Ritual 28 (no combat, but dice rolls, measuring, and movement), Monster Maker (Dungeon Diving card game), and Space Hulk. Kids are from 5 to 11 and the hardest thing so far is keeping focus between turns, not rules or complexity.
Bangarang in the Gutterlands is next, because it has an arts and crafts aspect. Tonks and Dungeon Tonks too. Probably a lot of those rules lite indie wargames would be pretty good.
>>95956916Buy those $5 bags of toy army men from the dollar store in two colors, green and tan. Each side takes turns setting up their men an appropriate distance from each other. Take a single small rock or marble, take turns throwing it at the other players army. The first player to have all his soldiers knocked down loses.

>>95961188People who said 3D printing was going to devalue miniatures were unfortunately not remotely correct.
>>95961188Sadly true. 3D stl files cost as much as miniature used to, and miniatures cost even more than they used to. Clown world, all the britoids blame it on brexit or trump or some other Looney leftist excuse, but really they just wanted to price gouge more
>>95961257Well, when I pirate the 20 dollar STL on telegram and then print 20 copies of it and sell them on for 5 bucks each, someone's work is sure getting devalued.
I assume most digital modelers are baking in the piracy to the cost of the STL. That and I can print a sculpt I actually bought as many times as I want. Also baked into the cost.
And with scans of old lead, I'm depriving ebay sellers of scalper money too.
>>95961768I buy STLs, but I think scanning old and out of production models and making them to 3d-printable models is a public service.
>>95961768I mean even that you're personally putting in the work for selling pirated prints for 5 bucks each isn't that massively devalued. I could already get reaper minis or those bulk chinese/russian ones for prices like that. 90% of the price of buying resin minis is that it's not worth making them for any less because it still takes time and requires a process to work through.

I can never get over how Conquest just wholesale stole Ermor for their wargame and nobody ever called them on it. I sometimes wonder if the Dominions guys even know.
>>95963262Don't think they care, also lots of the Dominion 6 nations are generic enough than would be very hard to fill a copyright strike even if they cared. Undead Rome and lizard egyptians for example, are kindo f generic.
>>95963273That's true, I can't imagine how you could ever C&D it. It just bugs me a little when people go on and on about how imaginative the Old Dominion is and internally I'm thinking "It's just Ermor, it's literally just Ermor, they even stole the backstory from Ermor".
>>95963289Well, you know illwinter would have never made a mini line anyway, in that way even if you don't buy it, you have art for ermor! I want them to make some of the wierdest races, like the Agarthans and Abysians, than would be kino. Becuase I know they will never make my main faction, Pyrene.

But at the same time, i'm offended by releases like pic related.
How are 3 bodies, one "victim", 3 arms with knifes and some other poses and 2 backpacks supposed to be a proper command squad for any game?
And dont get me wrong, i totally understand that this "set" is supposed to be used together with the other raumjäger stuff, and i would not say anything if they would sell that set for like $5... but they do charge $12 for this. Its a joke, especially compared to other $12 command squads like these two for example:
https://www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-napoleonic-infantry-female-command-475207 (not sci-fi, but gives a large amount of bodies, options like drums, banner, weapons, and yet.. would it have hurt to include a pair of arms with a rifle?)
https://www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-desert-rats-command-537458 (also not a huge amount of individual parts, but at least some variety, with the banner and at least two weapons included instead of just knifes)
>>95965357>But at the same time, i'm offended by releases like pic related.Seems random whether or not a set is a good bang for one's buck. I suppose their pricing strategy is meant to maximize interest for their subscription based system.
>>95965428>Seems random whether or not a set is a good bang for one's buck.Absolutely. They have some really good sets, with 5-10 body poses, different helmet/hat-options, a variety of weapons and options in general. If such a set would fall into my interests, i'm willing to pay 15-20 for it, but for the same price they sometimes sell barebones stuff that consists of less than 20 unique files.
>to maximize interest for their subscription based system.Probably. Its fairly pricy tho, and way too random for me to consider subscribing. I like to buy stuff i like here and there, preferably during sales, but some of their sets are simply not worth it. And its just weird how they decide how much a set should cost, because "files included" is clearly not a factor.

>>95960831>I printed a pretty nice metal slug and am going to paint it up. Found some STLs for a bunch of metal slug characters and some other vehicles. If I wanted to play a war game with them, what would be a good ruleset? There are quite a few basic-bitch platoon-level wargames that you can write up stats for. SF and hypermodern both. In Spectre or Asymmetric Warfare you could do it up as a light IFV with an MG and howitzer, for example. It's going to be extremely powerful until a drone strike or ATGM shows up, but ain't that always the way?
By the same token you could stat it up in WarEngine, or Renegade Scout, or any of the half-dozen early 40k heartbreakers, as some kind of Walker/slow tread vee. Mechanically it might as well be a Dreadnought. Hell, a couple of the vehicles in 1e Warzone are effectively just Metal Slugs, and the big Bauhaus tank is an MBT-sized one. For more skirmishy games you're probably best-off toning it down a little and using the stats for whatever mid to heavy robot equivalent are in the game. TNT's got big assault droids that can take heavy weapons, that sort of thing.

Anyone here following the sorta-reboot of Leviathan from FASA Games? I got to play it at Origins Game Fair last weekend, and the only thing keeping me from going all in are the painful post-tarriff prices. Nice hex grid naval maneuvering with a really satisfying power management mechanic.
Going to be getting into Deepwars soon, anyone have good mini recommendations? And I REALLY liked running RoS. Its super quick and intuitive while also being really flexible AND tactical once you get a hang of it. first time running it for othersas the referee. DESU it had everything I need for a flat out rpg too, think I will use its rules again. The combination of the ranger phase allowing you to coordinate actions, successful attacks allowing you to push enemies/retreat and the bonuses for multiple units in combat makes it a really engaging skirmish system! The adition of skills also allow for a good bit of rpg style creativity. “can I lasso the zombie”, “collapse a house”, “throw a hand weapon”, etc. just make an appropriate skill check.

>>95979175Ey cool, i'll have to read it. It did feel like a fitting sub-theme for spires. Think they already hinted on that with some of the concept art. Fun that my own take on it is more believable in the world too
>>95978724Even putting aside changes to poses to make things easier for assembly, the basic quality of the sculpts is also way down. Look at the fucking shoulders on that new model, the muscles just clip through each other and the collar like every limb was made by a different person and nobody even checked how they'd line up.
>>95979205I believe it's a lost spire, since the lore is it discovered a rift into Famine's prison and unleashed Greed, a fragment of Famine. The whole part is very Lovecraft, with corrupted sea critters and influence from space leading a cult, since Famine's prison is in space. Their end goal is to kill Jormungandr, a dragon that sacrificed itself during the Primordial Wars to literally hold the world together.
There's also a bunch of Weaver Courts stuff, with each court being lead by an actual fae character, like Titania and Queen Mab.
>>95979908Baller. I know Famine is waaay off in the future, but a space/water themed faction does sound cool. Didn't like a whole caste of exiles go there and never return? Rumored to join the forces of Famine. Think they've shown one model of it and it was very samurai, retainer inspired. Don't like that very much. But i've probably jumped on the Hel faction before then
>>95980091I think the retainer one they showed was the Quiet, the soldier and worker castes that left. I have no idea if they are involved with Famine.

>>95956916I started wargaming when I was around 10, and my brother was 5, and while he didn't really understand all the rules, he was very excited to play MESBG with me, and he liked heroes beating hordes of orcs/uruks. I remember I used to set him up with the Fellowship to see how many orcs he could kill, and he had a lot of fun. Rules are easy enough, but honestly you can guide them and they will just enjoy the results and imagine how the combat goes and all that. I feel like being into the fluff/idea of a game is much more important than the actual mechanics for younger kids (and for most people, honestly).
I have two kids of my own now (one was just born last week actually), and my almost 3 year old loves to see my models. I always tell her to be careful, but I let her pick them up, and, while I've had a couple of scares, 95% of the time she's surprisingly careful with them. She's even helped me fix some old metal MESBG recasts to the bases with putty, and she's learned the word "phalangites" from me working on my latest project.
I feel like you should first introduce them to the minis and they will grow to like them. Who wouldn't? And then starting with something like what
>>95960198 mentioned is a good idea as well. I used to play like that when I was a kid.
>blogpostYeah, maybe, but I think it's an important topic to consider. I think it's really crucial that kids are interested in stuff so they can become interesting and functional adults. I feel sad (for them) when distant relatives or political family visits my home and they don't show any interest whatsoever on my display cabinet full of miniatures.
>>95980838I like the idea, but the execution seems bad.
Like why is the box broken? Why does the animatronic look so bad, when the real life ones went out of their way to look at human as possible?
>>95980873If I remember right, Ampersand is a town made up of discarded robots, so they have the whole Junktown thing going on with their aesthetic. As for the style, that's just how Malifaux does civilian robots. I do wish it was a little closer to the Collodi style puppet robots.
>>95977514This is the one model that I think is a straight up downgrade for the box. I don't mind the changes to the rest of the box, but that one just sucks compared to the original.
>>95980779I wish the poses were a bit more dynamic, but considering these are going to be fucking pre-assembled, I see why they kept them bland. I do love the cooking bot, though.
>>95980312>Grand Cathay doesn't really look like Yuan or Ming era armors, they took the kitchen sink aproach when designing their range.Hence, why they're called "Proxies." A lot of people famillar with Chinese military history have said that the Jade Warriors are way too armored and that the average Ming grunt weren't given full body lamellar armor as standard issue gear. These are normally reserved for high ranking officers and bodyguards.
Except, your average Jade Warrior weren't just expected to fight your historical horseback steppe raiders and pirates from Nippon. At worst, they were also expected to fight powerful foes like the Warriors of Chaos and Daemons of Chaos. You know, the same Daemons that also give Space Marines trouble.
I wonder how well something Rollerball, like the James Caan movie, would translate to the tabletop. The problem is, as always, finding minis that would work for it - and the niche appeal of Fantasy Sports as a genre.
>>95981201Iirc Dreadball is pretty close.
>>95981201You could borrow some shifting mechanics that racing board games use. Your speed is determined by rolling a die and you can choose to shift up or down each turn which increases the size of the die. You have to move your entire team at one time so it can be hard to maintain cohesion around the ball carrier. Maybe add a turnover mechanic like Blood Bowl has.
>>95981189>Hence, why they're called "Proxies." The Jade warriors don't resemble Song-Yuan cataphract armor or Ming lamellar because the designers fundmentally don't understand what historical lamellar looks like.
>the Jade Warriors are way too armored and that the average Ming grunt weren't given full body lamellar armorNo, the issue isn't the amount of armor(fairly common during the Song-Early Ming) but that their fantasy armor doesn't even resemble historical armors.
>>95981333It would be interesting to incorporate momentum into it, and maybe turn the track into an oval so you have some guys that are good in straightaways, and some guys that are good in the corners.
>You have to move your entire team at one time so it can be hard to maintain cohesion around the ball carrier.Maybe something like Rampant-style activation tied to some sort of "Initiative" or "Game IQ" stat.
Or maybe a hybrid system with a pre-plotted movement, and then a phase of more reactive and free flowing play. Rollerball seems like something that would have 3 periods like hockey.
>>95981353Not just armors, the weapons don't really fit the Ming either. Over 85% of the Ming expeditionary force was cavalry, most of which were armed with bows or handguns with a sword as a sidearm and some lancers. Just compare and contrast the jade warriors cav with WGA.

>>95982946They're some of the very first CAD-designed plastics. They have quite stiff poses, and they're cast in 25-year-old molds. As the other Anon says, getting everything lined up on models with multiple open hands is kind of a bitch. On the other hand they do rank up much more nicely in blocks, if that's what you're after. They also match scale with the older historicals a lot better than Fireforge should you be going that route. For skirmish games it's harder to beat Warlord/WGF stuff into shape, especially alongside metal character models.
>>95984137>Any chance for a cheaper maker? Metal or plastic I don't care. The only other people I know of making large numbers of Sengoku and Edo-period civilians is the Perries. There are a couple from Bac Ninh (it's on the spot of blog that 4ch still thinks is spam if you link it). Reaper has a couple geisha and no other civvies. Grey For Now (and some Warlord importers) has a set of models with similar shipping and price to the kuros called "Unlikely Allies" that has several basic middle-class civvies. One of the sets North Star makes for Ronin has a couple armed peasants in it but I can't find them individually and the whole set isn't really worth it.

also, good luck on your undead roman sculps.
Found some old "finished" generic scatter terrain in a bin today. Touched some of it up and have been clear coating them while I was waiting for other things to cure and dry.
The wheelbarrow loads were done by filling the barrow bed in with a texture pace while leaving room for a reasonable amount of scatter mix to get tacked in afterwards. I thought the barrow with the stones in the bed turned out better. It's just more visually interesting, I tried to mix in different colors and sizes of stones to create some more variety on top of that. The other loads are just earth, as you can see and while it looks better in person I think the cart loaded with stones looks better. Maybe I will try giving them a wash with a dark brown or something to try to draw out the earthen texture.
I used the Kraut Cover Copious earth and light earth for the loads, secured in with their scatter fixing system. Highly recommend it by the way it's how I do all my bases now. Better than superglue and the mixes are top notch. I'm sure some people will scoff at the idea of paying for what is basically dirt and small rocks mixed with other basing material. However the variety and quality is well worth it, in my opinion. I don't have time to sort out rocks by color and size by hand and all that hoopla. I just want to work on my stuff not be a geologist and allat shit.
It sells out fast so if you can get some, get it. Get the scatter fixer, get the tack glue (it's very versatile, I use it for a ridiculous number of things in my workspace). Best mixed are Tale of Grimdark, Ruins of Persistence, Snow Highland pass, kodama woods, and meadows of purity. I'd also recommend getting some of the earth mixes, depending on what you're looking to accomplish. I have all of these things, and have applied most of it to finished figs so if anyone is curious and wants to see finished results let me know and I'll post a picture of a base done with the mix and even drop some advice on applying that one.
This is the "Meadows of Purity" mix. It's good for like a rock pocked grassy plain, Plains of Rohan kinda feel. Would work good for most fantasy stuff, or north america/Europe if you're talking something historical or based in a realistic setting. I've posted some of my stuff here before on occasion, you guys may have seen a lot of the mixes already.
>Tale of Grimdark
Really excellent mix. Includes a variety of skulls and bones in various states of integrity. Some are split open, some missing a jaw etc. You can see a couple on the base there. If you want an evil or foreboding sort of feel it is excellent. Would be great for an undead army, or a necromancers base etc. pair that with some of the burned Tufts from gamers grass and it looks pretty awesome I think. The mix is mostly washed out greys and whites with darker soil. With some chips of wood and leaves or something. Either way, highly recommended
All of this shit sells out really fast too btw so if you want it get it when you see it in stock.
And just to be clear I'm not a shill i just like to share my solid finds with my awg bros because because
>the ruins of persistence
Pretty self explanatory. This isn't a great example of the variety in there. There are bricks, concrete style chunks and a lot of other stuff. The overall appearance is obviously city ruins. It reminds me of the last firefight in saving private ryan, or carentan in band of brothers. That white concrete dust sort of look.
I clipped up some clear plastic from a blister pack to make the glass on the ground. Also, AK interactive ice crystals can be used to create a pretty believable shattered glass effect when paired with that. You could use clear sheet styrene instead of blister pack plastic but you'd be wasting your money imo unless you need it for some other reason.
The fixer system is actually insanely good. You won't lose any of the material even with regular handling, in my experience
Anyways I'll stop drumming on. If you like basing or want a quick way to dress up your minis bases grab some. I recommend throwing a layer of texture paste down as a base before applying the mix, so it isn't noticeable if there is not total coverage or you want a sparser look to the foliage, debris and what not. AK interactive makes the best texture pastes imo. Dries rock hard, sandable when dry, fully paintable.

>>95999810>>95999725>>95999832NTA, but.. I have a bunch of issues with the KS-3DP churn in particular. Everyone has their own skubby opinion on the level of greebling it encourages, so I'll ignore that. That said, it's already hard enough to find people who actually design things that are meant to exist in meatspace. 3D sculpting makes it much harder. The KS/Patreon churn model incentivizes turnover and quantity, so both the sculptors and the buyers frequently halfass their shit and don't test it first. The guys in my group who are all-in on printing are constantly bitching about having to tweak models or being dissatisfied with them once it's time to put paint to resin. They never have all their shit painted. Frequently none of it. The solution to a hole in their collection isn't tweaking rules or conversions, it's hunting up a patreon, flinging another half-cup of resin into a hole, and dumping more grey plastic into a shoebox on the back of the shelf. But what a value it was!
Which brings me to the personal problems. The first is the same reason I don't do Minecraft or MMOs anymore. It's far too easy to hoard thousands of theoretical miniatures, print hundreds, and abandon them the instant they aren't poking the reward button. Likewise, I don't want 50 copies of the same 10 sculpts. I want to convert and kitbash until every model's unique. Yes, you can do that with 3D sculpts, but I enjoy the physical process more. I don't like having to handle everything with kid gloves. Or a dust mask. Let alone painting them
The price/value argument for printing means jack shit when it's never quite what you want and half the shit you buy never exists as a physical object
>>96002714That printing press is a pretty weird take.

>>96003107Very weird take, but whatever.
>>96003107Your post is less about printing, but more about the bad spending habits of your mate. If that guy would not have a printer, he would hoard boxes of plastic or metal mini blisters in the shelves of his hobby room.
The point of being not satisfied how a mini looks "in the flesh" after a shiny render image made you print it is something I can understand, but I had this happen to me with plastics too. I bought several sets from WGA and Northstar only to find out that they do not look as nice as on some pictures I saw before, and I sold the stuff on eBay again. With prints, at least I can skip the hassle of reselling and just throw them to the trash.
But what I really disagree with is your statement about the lack of kitbashing potential, specifically physical kitbashing. You make it sound like that it's not really an option any more, but it is. There are countless of multipart sets. Not only you can combine them with each other, but also with plastic sets, and printed bits from all kinds of other sets. If I have a sprue of 6 knights and they come with a variety of weapons, but I want 6 maces, I would suffer with plastic. But I can just print 6 arms with maces.
All in all, it gives me a ton of additional options, with basically no downsides. And no, a guy who does not paint his stuff is not a valid point.
