Do you incorporate any foreign or less represented mythology in your game settings? I am building solo adventures based on Filipino mythology because itโ€™s my ancestry and I have written various stories about folklore and monsters from the Philippines. I find it gives genres like horror a better edge and grounds it in something more human than cookie cutter monsters from stock and stereotype.

Nope. I find that it feels like someone mined wikipedia for obscure details then hyperfocused on to create "different for the sake of different" which feels less original to me than orcs and elves.

No. I am not particularly knowledgeable or interested and suspect that if my doing so was noticed at all it would be considered bad and wrong to "steal" their culture.

Sometimes I like to find out what random bits of mythology/world history/etc players in my groups are into and then work bits of them into the setting.
The looks on their faces when they work out that I've dropped <thing they like> into a game I'm running is always nice.

Honestly no, but on a side note till I zoomed I thought that was a stack of Palladium/Rifts books on the right.
Very similar colors and binding.

I know that the people trying to build a bestiary out of "obscure monsters from X culture" don't.

Objectively correct take. Muh subversion and muh like x but with y oc settings are so prolific and overdone now that a "cliche" fantasy setting with all the classic races acting like they were envisioned as with no gimmicks is so extraordinarily rare that it feels like a major breathe of fresh air finding one.

I don't care if it's represented or not, I just use whatever seems cool and inspiring to me at the moment.

the setting is the great dream, and there's important individuals who are dreaming it, they take the form of power wizards and immortals when they realize who they are

Fucks with game tempo sometimes but ooc tangents about niche passions relevant to the fantasy at hand are some of my favourite experiences at the table. Truth really can be stranger than fiction!

iirc it's a west African thing but there's a hilarious recurring motif of the creator deity getting fed up with humanity but then instead of going on a smiting-spree like we're used to just... fucking off. (cue humanity trailing them and whining / apologizing prompting him to get the hell away even faster)

Pagan bogatyr being reskinned in Christian tones is pretty awesome wherever it happens, same goes for Beowulf and such.

Why does doing what you enjoy have to be subversion? Like I get why "ackchewally my elves are fungus people" might raise eyebrows but if a GM is playing whatever distinct thing they're doing straight with no reference for or against the usual stuff then the only "subversion" at play is the expectations living rent free in your head.

not really, they're still common as fuck
I fucking hate elves and dwarves and struggle to find fantasy settings that aren't bootleg tolkien shit, the only decent bets are the few Conan inspired settings.
