Why don’t you just use regular spray paint and acrylic paint from the art store? The cost of these are just jacked up. Also… Anyone ever get high off this as a kid?

I do it for some stuff but you have to be very careful not to overspray and ruin the details. I’ve never had an issue with chaos black. It’s like magic how easy it is to use and get great coverage. I’ve had less success with wraithbone white but like to do zenithal highlighting. In terms of acryllic paint from the art store sure you can use it but you’d better know how to properly thin it or you’re going to have a disaster on your hands.

>You get high
No, I’m not a degenerate

>regular spray paint
No precision, too expensive, likely to get too much of it in the model.
>regular store paints
I use them sometimes but they suck. Their color changes a lot as they dry, usually becoming some weird gray. Very little saturation. And the medium is a russian roulette whether it’s fine or completely awful.
>Anyone ever get high off this as a kid?
With acrylics or sprays? You can only really get high with shit like lacquer paints. Idk why you would want to do that.

People try save a buck and paint their premium luxury goods miniatures with dollar store craft paint and obviously, it just doesn't work as good. Stop trying to cut costs everywhere, you spend money on this stuff cause you think it looks cool.
Also a lot of other spray primers bond directly to plastic and can't be properly removed if it fucks up, which it sometimes will.

Depends. Priming? There's nothing wrong with Rustoleum 2x Ultracover. It just works.
Base coating? I just airbrush if it's something like a mono-colour Space Marine or vehicle.

Over the years I've seen so many people who think they are the chosen one who can paint nice looking minis with Appel Barrel paints, and every single time it's the thickest, shittiest paint job you've ever seen. Just get some Army Painter paints. They're actually pretty good now and won't fuck your shit up.

Even good artist acrylics are cheap by the ml compared to "official" hobby paints. The only thing you need to do is thin them appropriately with medium.
I don't understand the $1 store mentality myself. A heavy body white acrylic is like $12 and the tube will last you a decade.

It depends, but you're not going to go wrong paying up for dedicated mini primers. They have a premium price because they're good. You can find cheaper alternatives and some will work great, others won't. For example when I used Tamiya spray primer and followed with Vallejo, Citadel, and Army Painter paints they tended to bead and draw together on most surfaces and required an extra layer. It did the same with Tamiya's own brush paints so I guess that's just how their primer is. It is super-fine though, you have to try pretty hard to spray too much on. I don't have that issue with the Army Painter primer I've used for the last year. My shit-hot opinion is try the cheap stuff to see what they're like but don't shun the name brands out of misguided principles.

It's a matter of convenience. If you paint 1-2 Warhammer armies over the years, you need not many hobby paints anyway. Any regular 17ml dropper bottle will last forever for that purpose and you only need to replace your main colour maybe once.
Sure, if you paint excessive amounts of miniatures, some high grade acrylic might save some pennies over the long run, but compared to a single bottle of Vallejo white, it's more expensive.
As with the cheap craft paint crap: people are usually not experienced enough to really see the differences. Their hobby paint-painted minis look bad, and their craft paint-painted minis look equally bad, so they think it's the same stuff. Only with experience they will start to notice different behaviour in paint, and how it affects their paintjobs.
And don't get me wrong, artist grade stuff is good, but for the average Wargamer it is overkill.

Not all paints are the same, work the same, and dry the same.

A cheap spraycan costs like 5€
A normal hobby spraycan costs like 11€
Expensive (GW) Spray costs like 15€.

Realistically, I can save 30€ over some years of hobbying if I buy 5 times the cheapest spraycan instead of the hobby version. And with that I can probably spray 150 miniatures. Savings this "big" are not worth it to even think about for most people.

This is the best primer I've ever used. Price has more than doubled online since I last bought a can (4 years ago). Still got one full one left.

Their white sucks to paint over but the grey is a dream.

Amry Painter being good is one of the biggest shocks I've had coming back to painting. Their old stuff was mostly unusable (washes were decent).

I really do not get the "you can use craft paints" mentality.

Painting is tough enough as it is without tying one hand behind your back.

Automotive primer is an underrated tool.

I exclusively use Dupli-Color Sandable Primer. They also have a filler primer that I use for 3D-printed terrain (although if I'm being 100% truthful the layer lines are still right there even after 4 heavy coats).

It's weird, because ~10 years ago it was common for people to recommend automotive primer for minis (over craft/household primer). Now you don't see it in the conversation much. I think it's probably because all the paint brands got their own sprays out there, and a lot of the contrast painters don't want to stray from using the GW undercoats.

Anyone been using Revell primer, is it any good, I'm asking cause I could use a primer I don't have order from a different country.

You get what you pay for in primers, and the first layer is the most important. Getting a good even coverage that doesn't obscure detail and is matt.

Craft paints vary between brands. They tend to be transparent not opaque due to less pigment, and also have more chalk in them. They can paint fine if you paint in glazes and washes in multiple layers over white, i.e were you are using the transparency. Otherwise they barely paint at all. Individual paints in the same brand can be garbage as well, like blacks labelled matt can still have a glossy finish.

I use hardware store spray can paints and gw sprays interchangeably. For matt black and white I don't see any drawback with the hardware cans. For other colours the shops near me rarely have matt, usually it's glossy and even the ones that are labelled as matt are actually satin. I have single gw can and a handful of hardware cans at the moment.
(Good) hobby acrylics are basically ready to use with a little water. Fine art acrylics I want to adjust with medium. Cheap craft acrylics have terrible pigmentation and consistency. So there's a convenience to using hobby paint that I prefer over art acrylics. Craft paints are ok for low demand tasks, like making washes for terrain.

I've used cheap rattlecans forever and have had zero issues with it.
