I never played 3rd, but I've only played spearhead and it's fun. I know Seraphon had coalesced and starborne in 3rd, which were psychic themed and saurus/dino themed respectively.

I looked at their rules on wahapedia and I'm wondering what a psychic heavy Seraphon army would look like. A slann starmaster seems mandatory, but how many is too many and when is Kroak worth running. How many kroxigors and saurus do you run, if any, and how do you synergize with your mages? The psychic side of the army looks cooler to me (skink starpriest, starseer, and slann) but I don't know how the current spearhead boxes fit into a psychic heavy army.

The starmaster looks like an intimidating paint job but Vincey V said they're actually deceptively simple to paint with drybrushing and washes.

Nighthaunt are sapient, so they can be friendly, or at least cordial, under the right circumstances. Vampires are basically no different from regular mortals, they don't even really serve Nagash, they're just out for themselves. Ossiarchs are also perfectly sapient, if pretty uniformly devoted to the cause of Nagash and Katakros. But there's no reason a mortisan couldn't shoot the shit with some dawnbringers as long as they've paid the tithe and I know there's fluff about Ossiarchs enjoying strategy games.

I did talk about doing unified colors or different livery, but I think the lore of Freeguild Cavaliers implies each individual guy can just kinda do whatever. They're usually the last survivor of some big battle who takes the best gear available, so I guess you could just kee going with the symbol and colors of your regiment. But it isn't particularly clear if when they arrive at a city and become part of the military if they're forced to adopt that particular cities livery or what. Seems to kinda defeat the idea of a unified front if you're all guys from Greywater and suddenly Ser Bumblefuck from Gnashpit of Buttrape (Formerly Cove of Flower Fields) turns up and goes 'Yeah fuck you, these are my colours, NERDS' and goes and joins the other guys all sporting their own livery.

My guess is it is left up to you, the modeller to decide. Bit like how in TOW they made it possible for you, if you wished, to make your Knights for Bret be all one colour or have the mixed livery ala WHFB if you wished.

In AoS, the hobgrots were created like other greenskins by Gorkamorka. They were very materialistic and cunning and liked to strike deals and bargins even at this time. When Gorkamorka split up and fought each other the hobgrots offered to betray Mork to Gork in exchange for compensation. Gork was disgusted by their profiteering ways and turned his back on them, draining their skin of their green colour.

However Mork was impressed with their cunning and sneaky ways so blessed them with enough intelligence for them to hoard their power and wealth and outsmart simple brutes like Gork and other greenskins. He also made them quite aware that they are outcasts in the eyes of the greenskins (due to not having greenskin) and this gave them a sense of absurdistic nihilism, so they really don't care.

This is a terrible comparison but you’re sort of right, all the non-hero nu-CoS infantry are in the old empire model scale while the heroes + everything else are in the larger aos heroic scale. In practice there’s not really that much of a difference to the point that bits are still functionally interchangeable between the the different scaled kits, but you notice it if you kitbash or convert a lot as you’ll get some occasional bits that’re way too big or small to use. Also ends up with skeletons and zombies being physically bigger than the Steelhelms they’re raised out of.

It is actually canon that human size is pretty volatile though, it’s been mentioned that some ghurish tribes naturally grow as large as stormcast in the same way some chamonic peoples naturally have a metallic sheen to their hair and fingernails, or some Aqyshians can do things like hold hot coals longer than azyrites before they’re burnt by it.

that said, it looks like this upcoming season has missions and tactics that more favor smaller, more numerous units for chasing after the objectives or scoring, so you may have a wider variety of smaller targets to charge the cavalry into and might even prefer running multiple smaller units of cavalry to chase after flankers and lone objective holders rather than going in on a reinforced deathball.

Flavor fails are something I'll concede on but GW has been getting slowly better at it as the edition goes on. I think they reigned it in too hard initially but we're definitely seeing them open up a bit. Why would Squig herds do MW's when retreating unless they passed over that unit, which by the way, is exactly what Squig Hoppers do, you'll take the MW's for retreating, but you can do EXACTLY what you described in your complaint. Squig herds won't because they still have the herders, so instead GW chose to represent the risk of getting your arms close to a horde of angry meatballs.
All in all, I've been having the most fun playing 4e since I started the game in mid 2e even if it is just a few TTS matches and my monthly RTT.

Khorne in aos is often referred to as a techy sort of army with a lot of tricks. You can build it as a face smash aggro army, but its not the best iteration of that as other factions do it better. Some people were running 4 bloodthirsters, which is about as unga bunga as you can get. A bloodthirster with the 20 bloodletters and 10 flesh hounds is a solid half of an army list, with the other 1k points being khorne mortals. You can go all in on demons and it will be fun to play, you just probably won't have a high win rate (which only matters if it matters to you)

I'm currently trying to paint a 90s Blood Bowl team, and damn I totally suck.

It's not the games that hate basic infantry units, it's the players, gw simply followed that.

the first army to show that was chaos warriors in fantasy, since they were elite you needed to buy and paint less guys, the same success applied over to space marines with the added benefit of them being even simpler to paint for newbies.
Then the first revolution came with ogres in fantasy, they showed how an army of monstrous creatures wasn't just possible, but successful with newcomers for pretty much the same reasons (low model count, easy to paint).

That makes sense. After the success of Cathay it's pretty clear that new armies are what get people interested in the game. Both new players and people who do play TOW but it's not their main game got energized by Cathay.

At the same time, for the long term health of the game they need to give plenty of time to the existing armies, fill holes in their ranges and add new stuff that makes people want to start that army instead of just dusting off their old ones.

Yeah, if anything AoS has the most creativity poured into it of any of GW's settings. 40K just cranks out Marines and Marine accessories on autopilot and the lore sucks balls. I'm hoping with the backlash against the hyper woke now that everyone realises it's only a very small group who actually wants this, GW can move away from it.
