I will sink my teeth into the obvious bait that is the plot hook to keep the game moving, rather than letting it stagnate when one player gives their opinion about a tangent's tangent.

We have that one guy in our group. It's all in-character, though. One player might make a half-hearted attempt to do something possibly disastrous, fully expecting the other player to shut him down, and he does. But sometimes, a PC will do something stupid, but in-character, and not totally derailing, and the straight-laced PC will make an attempt to stop it, but fail. Then he gets to RP being utterly exasperated at having to clean up the chaos that has been wrought, while actually relishing the opportunity OoC.
It's the sort fun you can only have with guys you've known long enough to have some measure of balance. Other groups I've played with would either have the GM shut down any attempts to do something different, or let problem players get out of hand by totally derailing the adventure. Either way leads to hurt feelings or pissed-off players or GMs.

You really have to respect historical conquerors who could get tens of thousands of solders and dozens of governors/generals/nobles with huge egos to follow their plan. Just trying to get 5 people to follow a simple plan is exhausting.

I always try to herd my group around when I'm a player because it's great to get out of the GM chair once in awhile. I have very little tolerance for fucking around. We're all busy people with other things in our lives FFS.
