Is this game any fun? Worth the $100 + expansion investment down the line? I rarely play board games but I am trying to develop a small library for family game night

I play a few ttrpgs which is why this appeals to me. KDM also looks swell but costs a lot more! I have read a few reviews but I’d like to know what anon thinks!

Any input is appreciated, cheers

It's ok at best.

It sucks dick when using roll to move (which is RAW) but is a lot more functional if players just take a 6 for movement. Escort NPCs should still roll to move as them being retarded is kinda the point.
Searching for traps is completely retarded. You can only search areas you have line of sight to AND are currently occupying. This means you can stand on one side of an open door, search for traps, and will NOT detect the trap right in front of you because that is another area. The game sets up traps knowing this is how the rules function so you kind of have to follow that bat shit logic or your party will essentially always know where every trap is all the time. Make sure the players understand that fully before it pops up and they are usually cool with it.

The biggest benefit it has is that it is piss easy to make custom adventures for and it is brain dead easy to play and run. That said, it has effectively zero depth.

I would recommend one of the D&D adventure board games like Temple of Elemental Evil over it pretty much every time though. For absolute normies? HeroQuest is about as complex as I would recommend going.

This is best for tourists and kids. I don't hate it and think it worth it for easing people into TTRPGs and helping people start out in DMing and all, however it's basically baby's first TTRPG

heroquest is what people play before discovering D&D

That hasn't been true since the 1990s, nowadays what people play before D&D is minecraft RP servers.

>KDM
>for family game night

That is inadvisable, anon.
The rules density and permanent character death is too intense for kids. Also the dick monsters.

It's still plenty fun. But >>95968963 is right that there are simply better dungeon crawling board games available.

Why would "family" involve kids anyway?
Just play with your siblings/parents/aunts/uncles.
Kids can just entertain each other in some other room idk

It's decent, especially if you just homebrew. We add mechanics for fun (or to fuck with gm)
Game is VERY simple but it's perfect for when you're way too tired after wageslaving

I assumed because you talked about being too cool to play boardgames with children. Which is ish.

If you're an adult, it's meant as a foundation for all sorts of homebrew stuff you can come up with. Being Zargon player is a blast . Beer is also okay for play sessions. It's a game to sit back and have fun with mates. Not worth it otherwise.

Heroquest is great and it just filters out all the normies because it's not trendy enough for them.

It's great for getting normies into the hobby, so if you're looking for something for family game night it's probably the right thing.
Also easy to houserule and expand, cause the rules are very simple.

there is the "Unthreatened Movement" rule available. your movement dice default to 4 whenever there are no foes on the board.

Kids enjoy it and the quality of the artwork is very good, which helps. Get boring for GMs very fast.
The Song of Blades and Heroes rules plus a flexible tile-set map would be the better pick, from a gameplay perspective.

If you want a DC with no need for a GM and for less money:
-Dungeon Saga Origins
With an App:
-Descent: Legends of the Dark
-Star Wars: Imperial Assault
-Mansions of Madness
If you want something more like a hack 'n' slash:
-Massive Darkness 2
-Cthuluh: Death May Die
-Zombicide: Black Plague
