What does /tg/ think about spider man, avatar, and sonic being shoehorned into mtg?

There's an MtG General you can ask.
Opinions are generally divided though, and you can expect negativity to rule a place like 4chan.
Approval seems to be highest for Final Fantasy, lowest for Spider-Man, and Sonic here is just a Secret Lair so it gets ignored along with the previous likes of Walking Dead and Miku and Godzilla and whatnot. Secret Lairs aren't worth getting vitriolic over. It's not a standard-legal set like Universes Beyond, and yes there is a difference.

The LOTR set pisses me off specifically because the various race swapping of characters was almost certainly done to distract from the ongoing controversy of how WOTC was mauling DnD again and trying to fuck over third parties with licensing. And everyone fell for it.

Long story short is that Time Spiral was a big shock internally at wizards because it was the first time the popularity of a block had any noticeable difference between the completive players and the causal ones.
It was mostly because Time Spiral was a weird and complex block which required a higher level of mechanical understanding to get the most out of.
Then you add in that OG Ravnica which while being popular was also relatively complex and Coldsnap which was a experimental one off set in of itself were also in standard, led to a brewer and competitive players paradise filled with weird but viable decks.
This however was just to much for your average causal who was mostly running whatever they could open from packs and unlike Ravnica which bundled everything up into cool color combos, Time Spiral was an anniversary block that didn't hold your hand when bringing back old mechanics and the like.

Needless to say, this caused a paradigm shift within Wizards as they could no longer just make thing under the assumption that everyone would like it the same which led to a greater level of appealing to different markets in particular, which has snowballed to how things are today.

I'm a fan of Sonic but this is the kind of shit that makes me not want pic up MTG again. The crossovers would be good if it was ONLY fantasy. The fantasy theme is dead now. Also who designs the cards now? Most of the cards have boring rules on them. And why the fuck is Sonic a warrior?
What I hate the most is that my local shop only wants to play WotC, GW and Pokemon/Yugioh.

This bullshit doesn't belong in Magic and everyone fucking knows it. Know how I know? No one in the community before these dog shit söykike fake gamers joined, was asking for this shit. I was looking at WOTC timelines as part of posting in a different thread, and I noticed something. Time Spiral lines up pretty well with 4th Edition D&D. The relevant part is that WOTC acted like it's customers/players had no options but to do what the company expected. Public backlash against 4e + Magic sales faltering must have panicked WOTC behind the scenes. Lorwyn's Planeswalkers were already planned for Time Spiral block, so they weren't a response (production cycles used to be longer), but New World Order and rarity = complexity was. Mythic rarity likely came of it, especially since justifying "crap" rares with complexity and less draft impact was already a thing in the late 90s. Then we get OP Jace as a mythic and suddenly WOTC has its $ answer.

The most insane thing is the MtG players are the most normal looking people at my LGS even with all the Secret Lairs. The Pokemon, Yugioh, One Piece, and Lorecana crowds look exactly like you'd expect. I don't think I'll ever be able to switch TCGs because of that fact alone. That said the second someone makes a half decent TCG with a high fantasy setting I'm quitting magic. The Holo Live TCG is set to release soon. Can't wait to see that crowd.

This. I never understood people sucking off MtG as if it has 40k levels of interesting lore. The vast majority of planes are either 'real world mythology with the names slightly changed' or 'the plane where everyone is X job'. I stopped playing paper Magic in like 2013 when I realized that Theros was indicating it wasn't going to get better from RTR and Innistrad blocks being garbage, and only briefly tried arena a couple times before quitting for good. Game has been increasingly nauseating since Lorwyn-ish with only brief pockets of interesting bits (like Rise of the Eldrazi limited - constructed fucking sucked). I just hopped in here to laugh at how it's degraded into cardboard fortnite complete with your average dudebro playing it rather than it being the domain of weird spergs.

was one of the skeeviest lies they ever made. It wasn't too complex to follow, it was too complex to follow for the braindead idiots they wanted to be their target market. The self-contained stories post-Invasion Block were alright, but obviously had less long-term character investment.

Returning to "long stories" but making it fucking follow the Marvel formula was lobotomizing the brain they had previously sedated, and now discarding all of it is beheading the corpse.

They were right. The vast majority of players never really cared about early MtG story because it was just not very good. MtG''s writing is at its best when it's just one or two lines of flavor text, some interesting art and maybe an evocative name for the card. The moment you try to jump into a book or, god forbid, a website article, it reveals itself for the drivel it is. This is the case now, and was the case back then as well

It was far better back then, and you had recognizeable characters that would stick around for more than 1 set while not being entirely godawful.

Planeswalkers were not superhero wizards, they were people cursed with near-immortality and power beyond what their mortal shell could reasonably handle and frequently insane to the point that several tried to come up with ways to NOT go insane. It was infinitely more interesting and I have several of the old novels that prove it.

Yes anon, I've read those novels as well, and they were no different from the pulpy fantasy dreck that could be found fucking everywhere back in the day. It failed to capture the audience back then, they tried to change it, and it failed again, because nobody plays this game for the lore or the plot. Like I said in my first post: It doesn't really matter

NTA but obviously Magic's strongest point was its worldbuilding but I find the issue is that unlike a project on the level of Black Library Wizards never had the infrastructure in place to do more with it outside of paring a novel with a fatpack at best.

Like there is nothing on a raw conceptual level that prevents Magic from having good stories, its more often that Wizards by tying them to set releases, set up a system where they were putting out 3 + books a year by the same roster of authors where Jeff Grub was the most accomplished one among them.
its telling that the best books they wrote were tied to sets so far in the past that the writers could breathe (Brothers War, Jodah Cycle, or were allowed to do whatever (Agents of Artifice).

The Multiverse isn't a worthless setting nor are the characters within inherently worthless, it just needs to be freed from the expectations of market the upcoming set.
But we both know wizards will never do that.

Time will tell. FIRE turned into "print OP thing, let it win games while boxes still sell, ban it when we're selling the next OP thing" - Oko > Uro > companions > Tibalt > horizons >... but the real $ is in Secret Lairs because it's basically all directly going into WOTC pocket. They're no longer worried about formats and balance, only saturation and consumer fatigue.

If you believe the leaks the entire season why the spongebob secret lair exists is that they were trying to get the rights for Star Trek for the upcomming space set in the style of the Godzilla cards, and since they're all owned by the same parent company, the Spongebob and Avatar cards are the end result of those talks.

Even worse was how inconsistent the race swaps were. Eomer was white, but Eowyn (his sister) and Theoden (his blood related uncle) were black? Arwen was white, but Galadriel (her grandmother) was black? And those are just the ones I know off the top of my head.

Anon, RtR was part of this era too, even if Ravnica is historically one of the better parts of Magic. I say that not because it's Gatewatch-related, but because the same bumbling through trying to make the new planeswalkers into everyone's favorite mascots is exactly the reason why they tried to make poster boy Jace Beleren the Living Guildpact.

Jace is a fascinating example of trying to push a character over... Because it worked, but not for any of the experienced veteran fanbase and then much of that goodwill was lost with the gatewatch.
Jace and Chandra were basically perfect marketing bait for with i would call the "young fat guy in a hoodie" demographic if your get what I mean. And so they rode that popularity hard and they still ride that popularity to this day.

I grew up in that era and it was kind of cool. pirate jace was a bit lame. but the gate watch and even the war of the spark was kind of cool as a background battle going on you could see in the cards. old wotc even had felicia day play a chandra deck. in the pc game you could play through gideons backstory and all that. but now something about chandra being in a race car and tezzeret in space feels like they’ve completely don’t give a shit and let post malone print his face on cards.

Different Anon here, I quit during the Gatewatch period since I thought it was just way too bland, then a few years ago I noticed by chance they were doing new Phyrexian sets (ONE/MOM, even MAT), and thought they were quite cool. Also the Kamigawa tech set and Duskmourne I liked a bit… I mean, the 101% quips flavor text is awful everywhere. But some card art was nice.
Last couple sets I wasn’t even interested in looking at all the cards anymore, seems something has gone completely off the rails, flavor is gayer than ever and somehow every card has 8 lines of text with super specific triggers and payoffs guess that is what they call "design space"

Regarding the "magic story was never good" argument, I think we can all agree that TCG flavor works best in terms of just being "world building," as you will usually not have/see all the cards in the sequence they’d form in a story, but you can easily learn what Llanowar is from a few glances, and so on, character can also nicely be built, but more in a general sense, put some guy on a couple cards saying sage things and then obviously it is a wiseman, and so on. But quips everywhere and obviously all characters are clowns.

Ironically Pirate Jace redeemed him as a character in the eyes of most the people reading the story.
Turns out giving The Blue Player TM amnesia as reset the character as a buff confident chad with a Gorgon GF before giving him all his old memories back so the new development sticks works wonders.
Now is is an edgy Ugin style ghost man apparently.

I am 100% sure wotc doesn’t give a shit about color pie. They just look at what colors a character is and print it. They made the GOAT FF black mage blue red because he’s blue and red in the art. Literally no other reason. The white mage is just white, the dark night is just black and zidane who is mechanically a strictly worse assquatch rogue is boros.
