Is The Doomed good? Are there any other games that feel like Hunt Showdown?

There's been pirated pdfs of it for a while. Skimmed it, its meh. The difficult terrain rules seemed notably retarded. Wouldn't pay for it, nothing new or innovative, just trying to rehash the indi rulelite rpg onto skirmish wargames.

The rules are kind of at the level of "what if we got rid of almost all rules" which most people will eyeroll at but it's good for non gamers, kids, and as a house ruling framework.

All the ideas and tables in it for monsters and bands and missions are great and can be used as a splat book for a more serious wargame. They are vague but inspiring.

Of all the kitbashy, streaking grime, 28 tufts kind of games that preceded Trench Crusade this one is my personal favourite.

My understanding is that Sludge was the first but I could be erong, then Turnip came out then this and now you have TC. I'm sticking with this, Osprey has got stupid money from me over the years and their stuff varies but its to my taste.

It's so-so. The concept is good and there's a lot of fun monster rules but your units and your options are just way too simple. I dunno why it doesn't just have a custom unit builder instead of this weird "pick these bespoke factions with these exact units" when the whole appeal was kitbashing what you wanted.
Also a super simple pickup game and a continued, multi-session narrative are kind of at odds. If you're organized enough to continue meeting regularly then you're probably organized enough to play something with more depth to it. You don't need a single stat game then.

Hmm, not a fan of all the other games you mentioned. I dislike Sludge, Turnip, and TC for all different reasons.

Yeah I don't really like them either but this is a distillation of that kitbashing, grimdark ethos. To my mind WW1 is plenty dark as it is lol. But I feel like the Doomed is vague enough to be your iteration of that, not the people who called it "28"

Buy it if you want to make warbands of yourdudes and are stuck for ideas. It's not a "system" you're getting into. It's just a nice little book.

When you read a lot of the old, old wargames rules they are simple, too, but a nice read. This is a nice read.

Shrug/10
This game literally does nothing. It's like with those B-movies that have some cool poster, which is in the same time the best element of the movie. Here the cover is worth more than the book

It's fun, the monsters are well done and interesting to fight.

That said, it's a game to pick up if you're bored out of your mind or if you're new to skirmish games. Don't expect substantial rules or heavy customization, it's just a silly, fun excuse to kitbash and kill big eldritch monsters.

It's very good, in a non traditional way.

The core rules are the most stripped down you can get, 7 pages in total, but there's like a hundred pages of content in scenarios, loot, upgrades, achievements...

The best part is mission generation, which has you combine a monster (which comes with its own unique behavior table, minions and terrain, demanding vastly different approaches to tackling each encounter) and a mission (stuff like who has the most models on a particular terrain), there are 36 of each. Each slain monster and each successful mission unlocks new list building options, so you're slowly getting fed vastly more content that it first appears.

Cont.
Instant narrative is provided through the Shock table, which is the Injury table from Mordheim/Necromunda dialed up to 11. Literally I think it's 11 results as it's a 2d6 table and most of them result in somebody getting a free action - it might be the attacker, who got an opening for a finishing blow, maybe the target is riposting or just crawling away, maybe an ally of the target gets a reaction shot at the attacker, etc. It gives interest and uncertainty to each attack.

Never played Hunt Showdown, but knowing what little I do know of it Silver Bayonet if you're not opposed to playing in a later time period. Otherwise, maybe you could jerryrig Alfa Zona into it.

Call of Cthulhu with Pulp rules is possibly the perfect Hunt Showdown system.
