Anyone know about that "sword world" game?
Apparently it's "D&D but Japanese". I tried reading the rules, but they're so oddly explained (and split into THREE core books) that I got lost instantly.

>Sword World 2.5 - Core Rulebook I.pdf: File too large (file: 30.2 MB, max: 8 MB).
Well, fuck me.

To learn the game and play you only really need the first one.
Add the Standard Combat Rules from the second book and that's it

The rest in those books are mostly reference tables for item and abilities for the players when they grow beyond certain levels in the different classes

No, that "gods" exist. A pantheon, rather than the one true God. Because it's a fantasy world.

Aren't these "games" meant to follow the text of the campaign 1 to 1, with even characters' actions and words pre-defined for them?
How is this different from just acting?

There are campaign books and regional books for the general setting of the continent
The campaign books are meant to be played alone or in group.
That way you can make use of the material even if you're alone or test the scenario yourself before bringing it to the table.
Some have randomized map generation and events and they're certaintly not a walk in the park

Lot more non-combat skills encouraging a balanced party and more interesting roleplay, as opposed to D&D where everyone is a seasoned adventurer. Also a character is required to multiclass, otherwise they suck.

Mmm.
Because classes are extremely specialized, like a swordsman only know how to swing a sword, and will have no idea how to scout an area, look for traps, or even identify monsters, which is required to use their weaknesses (like fire and the like).
I don't remember, been a while. I think they're d6s, but I'm checking.
Heh, depends, of course. When I played it a few months ago, fights were very short and bloody.
Dunno, haven't got time to try any.

NTA and haven't gotten to actually play but:
>2D6 based system (no platonic solids in japan)
>"Classes" are really "skill kits" that each get leveled separately, non-combat tasks are 2D6 + attribute + class level
>"flat" progression (spending XP to increase a class from level 2 to level 3 does not affect how much XP other things cost)
>feats
>3 different combat systems with increasing complexity, first seems fine to me
>damage is done by rolling against a table for your weapon's power, rerolling on criticals
>rules mainly focused around combat and dungeon exploration, there's a non-combat expansion but that's clearly not where the heart of the rules are (this makes it feel very D&Dlike to me)
>rabbits are unloved by gods
>dwarves are immune to all kinds of fire damage

2d6+modifiers
Multiclassing is a must. You build getting skillsets from different classes
Lots of classes and races to choose from.
Very interesting to mix and match
Combat is a bit weird
Critical damage can explode
Physical armor reduces physical damage but not magical damage
There are lots of magical classes (4 in the first book alone) and many non-magical classes with magic-like habilities

Correction: I RAN it. It was months ago, and it only lasted 3 sessions before my workplace fucked me over and set me to work whenever sessions happened.
It's all about buying skills, and because so many non-combat skills are still mandatory for combats and non-combats, losing anyone is a big loss. I played a tabbit hunter modelled Ernest Hemingway, an old humanoid bunny hunter who tried to write a compendium of all the monsters around to restore his reputation. It relies a lot on the "frontline", which is a rectangle on the map where all melee-oriented character will rush in. If you're in it, anyone can target you. That's how Ernest Nessingwary got a nasty wound from a dire wolf.
Not really? Making a character is easy, but balancing the party is a lot harder. If you don't have anyone with an identify skill, you're forced to brute force your way through encounters.

Most spells can be resisted for half damage or negated completed with a Willpower check, and in case you fail, you get full armor piercing magic damage (or just whatever the spell does). There are some consumables, equipments and accessories that helps mitigate that type of damage or increase Willpower during a check.
...But again, the best solution would be to just kill the wizard first.

The game combat is fast in general, as Mob fights often take less than 3 rounds to finish (sometimes even 1), this for a few reasons:
> Initiative and action is team based, so if players win initiative, then the whole party goes first before the enemy team can act.
> Enemies can either roll with their standard values or use default values (Standard values + 7). This makes it easier to fight enemies around the party level, as you literally just have to roll average to hit/evade
> All this not considering the buffs the party can have, and as this is a 2d6 based system, even a +1 is enough to make your character strong enough to take on higher level enemies.

That doesn't mean all your fights will be that fast, as it really depends on your luck, your party build and whatever you are fighting against.
> You are a single marksman on the back with 3 muscleheads on the frontline
> You are fighting a few kobolds, with a Goblin Shaman as support on the back
> This should be easy
> Wait, nobody took scout class
> You lose initiative because no scout
> Goblin shaman uses Nap on everyone in the frontline.
> Everyone too dumb to pass the Willpower check
> They fall asleep
> Meatshields are gone
> You are now facing a horde of angry dogs alone, while their greenskin leader laughs at you from the back.

No, it iterates on the first edition. The first edition though is based on old school dnd, and it is actually kinda neat. I recently read through the complete first edition and it seems really nice. Old school with a giod amount of crunch but also more tidy that the actual BECMI without turbing into modern "rules light" slop

That's dnd. Sword coast separates class and race. The basic character creation is that you roll dice for stats, and then you use experience to buy levels in different classes. Experience points works sort of like a currency and every class you buy into levels independently (so a level 3 fighter pays the same amount as a level 1 fighter to take a level of sorcerer).

Scaling-wise you can improve your skill at evading by leveling fighter or thief, and you can also buy stat increases for HP. You don't get HP just by leveling up though, but you do get a little bit of damage resistance.

Classes are overall very specialized. Kike mentioned you need to level fighter or theif to improve evasion in battle. Only fighter can fight with heavy armor and full sized weapons though. Some classes improve specific skills when leveling up, while spellcasting classes basically only get access to better spells when leveling.

As for spells, the actual selection is very similar to your usual dnd fare, but the system uses mp and metamagic is a built in assumption.

A final quirk to mention is that the system avoids having the GM rolling dice. GM basically never do it unless they are running an npc using as a character or if they have opted into an optional rule.

I did mean D&D first edition. There's a game I like, Chronicles of Mystara, who is apparently based on it.

>Experience points works sort of like a currency and every class you buy into levels independently
Ha, I see. Sword WORLD kept a similar system. And so did Warhammer, which is why I like it.

And it seems to fit, fights don't feel "fair" in the meaning that monsters and characters seem to follow different rules.

Yeah Chronicles of Mystara is based on actual dnd rules.

And I'm talking about sworld world rules. In original dnd you are stuck in only one class that you level automatically as you get experience.

As for Sworld World monster rules, even though the monster use different stat blocks from player characters and the GM doesn't need to ever roll for results because of this, the stat blocks just extrapolates the monster's stats if it had been a player character. Instead of making the GM roll 2d6:s, they just add +7 to the monster's stat and call it a "rating" instead which the player rolls against to avoid getting hit or taking damage. It is surprisingly elegant thanks to how Sword World leverages the 2d6 and its one "rating table" that you often refer to during combat.

fyi the race as class was only in the basic d&d line set (sort of like the essentials line in 5e) which simplified things, because the optimal choice as an elf in original and advanced d&d was to always play a fighter/magic user, so they just made that be the only option in the beginner set

Instead of making different worlds for different campaign themes the world have different continents and kingdoms for the different flavors of campaign. This mean there is a low fantasy edgy continent or a dragon rider kingdom.

Races and classes are mechanically different. Not everyone is a different favor of human, instead you have weird races like midget shotas who become hulks.

The combat mechanics are inteded to be a game and not a simulation of real life combat, so its focused on been fun instead of retarded.

Multiclassing is a de facto. There is no "Men I dont want to waste my levels on another class but I want x feat for them", instead is more like "so next adventure is gonna be around the same level right? I want to branch out to a different class".

There is no aligment faggotry. You are civilized or barbarous and both can be good or evil.

You can play as monsters. From vampires or lamias.

Instead of skill like acrobatics or sleight of hand everything is concentrated into minor classes like range, scout or sage.

The big con is that the book are explained like shit.

I gotta say that Sword Coast 1ed is a really elegant system. I can see how it beat dnd in the japanese market. I'm actually loving the table they use for damage and damage reduction. With the advanced rules for weapons it leads to some really neat ways to express your character in choice of arnament without you having to gimp your character for a concept (the changes to attack, strike and crit rating in the advanced rules kinda maths out to everything being equal). The way characters develop will also keep everything relatively grounded even as you hit the high levels. I assume that means spellcasting might become incrementally stronger, but since spellcasting classes get 0 defense development I assume that kind of keep them in check (compared to dnd 5ed where a level of spellcaster gives you a not insignificant hp increase)

Fun note too, by RAW you can take as many weapons as you want, and since holstering and unholstering one-handed pistols/swords is a free action, you can swap between a sword and pistol with a shield freely. You avoid reloading too by carrying enough pistols to compensate.

So long story short, Raxia (the SW2.5 setting) doesn't have blackpowder, since they can just use magic to shoot their bullets (i.e. the Artificer "X Bullet" spells). However, just 'cuz you know how to make gun go bang, doesn't mean you can hit the broad side of your mom with a shot, which is where Marksman comes in.

*However*, because you need magic to shoot, guns deal magic damage, which bypasses Defense. That's a BIG FUCKIN' DEAL, so there's gotta be some tax in order to balance that shit out (i.e. having to level both a major and minor class).

If you don't wanna shoot, there's still enough utility with the various artificer spells to be useful, you just won't get the most out of the class.

There's also the recent supplement which TECHNICALLY adds in rules for Miakis for SW2.5.
a Race of cat people, not native to the Alframe continent, but some can show up as travelers from the Terastier Continent. As such, they are a rare race that if you can find one, usually in the city of Harves on the rare of occasions.

That's probably because almost all official rule books are translated. Not counting replays they are only missing like 5 books on 2.5 (1 supplement, 2 world guides, 1 campaign book and a scenario magazine). This month another supplement releases, so 6 books total and they should be up to date.
People can complain about the translators and all, but fuck do they work. I wish more games had autists as dedicated as those

yeah, Core Rulebook 1 is pretty much everything you need to play. the other books just add more stuff to the mix. Hells, the recent Bubble World Book only NEEDS Core Rulebook 1.

Also, the Duo Adventure Campaign book (The Princess of the Sparkling Sun and The Prince of the Dazzling Moon) can be played stand-alone by itself. It has some simplified rules included.

Surprised nobody has posted http://sw25.wikidot.com/ yet.
It's a wiki that simply collects all the "data" from the books - you've got all the races, classes, spells, items, etc available in a more easily browsable format here.
There are also APIs for querying spells and monsters

use core rulebook 1 and play a campaign book like vice city with it. all of the campaign books are written to be played gmless almost like a gamebook so you can easily get a feel for the game in action. you can solo a campaign to familiarize yourself with it and then gm a spiced up version of it later for a group of players.

old school did it the best. later editions have so many fucking archmagi shitting up the settings that its impossible to swing a cat without hitting 20 fucking khelbun's or what have you

with OG DnD, it was so much faster and easier to level thieves and fighters etc it explained why the mage was such a rare class, why high level mages were so vanishingly rare. especially since GP was everything.

all the GP loot fighters etc used on fancy cool magic gear...

was GP the magic-user had to blow on spell components or spell research.

Have you not heard of the musashi volumes? each is like 100 USD because they're super manga, with utterly fucktardedly beautiful traditional japanese ink painting watercolour art, telling the story of miyamoto musashi.

and just for shits and giggles, beserk released a series of ultra manga volumes where, again, each volume is like 100 USD and HALF of the original volumes, doubling the run count, thanks to insanely high detailed super-art.

some manga can get downright fucking crazy with the 'lets just do art and call it a story later'

Gold Peices.
GP is XP in OG DnD. you slay some monsters, cool, you get some xp, but their loot is also xp.

so you kill the evil dragon? your party survivors get a gorillion xp from the dead dragon and its hoard. hence why that was commonly the end point of a campaign.

ADnD had the mean income of a peasant farmer who was well off be about 100 gp annually.

then the adventurer's come along and survive fighting some goblins lead by an orc, and now have a bunch of armour and crap to sell worth about 500 gp.

it was all about who even HAD currency. so instead they had the worth of shit in GP, and earning gp also translated directly to xp.

so if your party, cased a rich merchants place, the fighter takes out some guards, the magic user sleep's others... then the thief breaks in and steals all the merchants gems.

instead of only getting the xp from the guys you killed, you split the GP as XP and get it.

it allowed you to earn xp with non combat far better.

In theory getting a larger treasure means you had to fight harder or overcome harsher obstacles
Bigger treasure = more challenges and experience = leveling up
Another way to do it is more treasure = better teachers, training resources to learn = leveling up (but you need to left time pass between adventures to invest training time)

That means the GM should scale treasure with difficulty ALWAYS.
It's more direct and sincere in a way
But from a roleplay and campaign building standpoint, it's very limiting in what you can put on the table

Most of the time you didnโ€™t level up instantly either, and it was assumed to take a week with both training and carousing

The party was also assumed to by the mid levels have a warband similar to mount and blade, that they led in the overworld
It was hard to bring all of them into the dungeon or similarly tight spaces

Put not so simply...

TSR released a book called the Rules Cyclopedia in the west to end cap the Basic system.

The Japanese translation of this book got overly simplified made into 3 separate manga sized booklets. Finding any dice other than d6s in Japan was almost impossible. So the books converted everything to d6.

These books became pretty popular and so the Japanese TTRPG scene sort of spun off from there instead of AD&D.

Sword World in one form or another has been going for quiet sometime now and is kinda like their own variation of D&D (like The Dark Eye in Germany).

But is it good?
Yeah it's pretty fun. It's a rules light system with a focus on constructing custom combination clases and loot hunting.

The translations that are available now for Sword World 2.5 are actually really good (on the level of the Double Cross translations) so it's much easier to pick up than it was 5 or so years ago.

This is actually something I really like about the races, they impact things pretty heavily instead of just being small adjustments to ability scores.
Napkin math, best case is 5 + D6 for your starting strength so probably 10 since you three rolls for your base stat as per character creation rules suggestion. Would take an average of 17 sessions to get you up to STR 15 for the most basic metal armor, so definitely a struggle. Another 30 to get you up to STR 24 for the highest requirement armor. Your elf would definitely be pretty unique at that point.

An elf could actually start with 14 Strength, by grabbing a Body 6 Background, rolling max on the d6 for Strength, and buying a Super Strong Bracelet (+2 Strength Ability-Enhancing Bracelet) for 1,000G. But more importantly, they could actually just grab Armor Proficiency A
/Metal Armor as their starting combat feat and be able to wear Steel Guard which has a Minimum Strength of 12.

Oh, I missed the Body 6 background.
You do only get 1200 GP starting out (and do need things like a weapon) so the 1600 Steel Guard is a bit out of reach, but probably within one adventure.
Would definitely be an interesting character

Gold that you got back out of the dungeon was equal to your exp earned AND you needed gold to pay trainers to level up. (gold you didn't retrieve from dungeons/challenging wilderness adventures doesn't count toward your exp)
Sometimes you had a Thief quickly get the required exp to level from a good score but they didn't actually have enough gold to pay for trainers so you'd sell off off magic items or get a 'friendly loan' from your local thieves guild to get there.

Oh yeah. Elf Warrior Lord is coming along great.

you CAN put weak races in heavy armour in goblin slayer ttrpg. you need to buy the adventurer skill [encumbered action] as each rank adds to your strength and endurance so that your strength endurance score against the heavy armour's 'Heavy X/Y' property is bigger. +10 at legend rank. and if you're wearing a strength +2 ring, well now you're much much more able to wear heavy armour easily.

IF your strength endurance is less than X, you double all fatigue. and if it is at least Y, you can halve the dodge and move modifiers from it.

you also don't have to post the spell list. A thing to know is that you can instead just replace it with what spell level you have available to.
In the case of this Elf Lady, it's Truespeech 1, and in the case of your Human Lady below, it's Divine (Zaiya) 2. But if you want to jot down the spell list, then go ahead.

Shame we'll have to wait for something like an animated adaption of Daikatana for even the chance of the Supplement to be brought over.

it just makes so much logical sense. you know where to find shit. and then you look up something like the BMM (battletech) etc and you have to look through like ten different rulebooks for the rules on ONE fucking action / event. fucking madness.

but here's these guys, whose language is not even english, and their book is just so fucking well designed and set out. so legible and readable. it just flows. there's good whitespace, topics are organised sensibly. and whenever something is referenced, it never just assumes you know where to find it, it ALWAYS fucking tells you the page to go to when it references something.

I'll have to see if there is an English version. I watched a drama of it back in 2009 or so. When I told a Chinese guy in one of my clubs about it he got real excited and told me some version from the 80s was better. I go over to his dorm to check it out and it's in fucking Chinese, I had to tell him I was watching the newer show subtitled. I don't know what either of us was thinking.

Is it assumed I am controlling a full part of (4?) characters? Is it balanced to work with a single character?

The campaign books have settings for each encounter depending on how many PCs there are (enemy count and type, extra conditions like support damage, enemy buffs, etc). You totally can play the books with a single character, but its recommended to use a character that atleast has some points of evasion (a Warrior class) and hopefully some class for Initiative (Scout or Tactician, tho tactician is kinda useless solo).

This is rejected art for shadow of the weird wizard, or whatever they named the !not poop setting they created for shadow of demon slop. Let this be a lesson is how 90% of the posts here are made by retards that know absolutely nothing about what they are talking about and speak exclusively in blatant falsehoods. I hate wotc to but being retarded about shit like this just gives the wotc paypigs ammo.

course, Sword World and GobSlay isn't the only Group SNE games that have been translated. There's also Scrapped Princess and Dragon Half (which are just Sword World with small changes), and also Embryo Machine. (The board game was brought over here by Lion Wing and the TTRPG was translated, you can find it in the mecha monday threads)

Is it just me who feel 2ed is a direct step down from 1ed? 1ed is actually goated, the way npc and player rules are perfectly exchangeable is fantastic for GM economy and the damage/defense rating table is actually a genius way to get more nuanced results out of a 2d6 roll. Your damage resistance being a roll is also really unique and actually solves a lot of the funkiness that the flat damage resistance tends to have (where it makes it pointless to attack for some weaker attackers)

Chronicles of Mystara, and the Mystara setting, is based on Basic/Expert D&D. "First Edition" usually refers to AD&D1e.

After the first publication of Dungeons and Dragons ("OD&D" is usually the term nowadays), TSR forked the line in two - "Basic" Dungeons & Dragons, released ostensibly as a clean-up of the original D&D rules, and then a forthcoming "Advanced" Dungeons & Dragons to be written by Gygax. The demand for Basic was so strong that TSR ended up releasing an "Expert" set to follow up the Basic line, and Gygax's Advanced ruleset ended up being significantly different enough that this essentially split D&D into two separate games.

WoTC combined both lines back together in 3rd edition after they acquired the D&D brand from TSR's bankrupt husk.

No wonder I never heard of Mystara if it's AD&D's "sister" game.

There was also some well know politcing behind the scenes you can look up. Gygax changed writers to stop royalties so you have variations in boxsets and stuff even inside OD&D, Mystara kept getting changes and updates that delayed it until years after modules set in it and AD&D had already released so a lot of people played AD&D set in Mystara and remember it being officially that way (TSR was aiming to deforest the amazon by printing setting books for AD&D).

It's an interesting thing. You can ask the osr general for people very angrily explaining their biased takes and slowly getting mad at each other or look for some articles.
