>>95968495>TQHas your hard work in D&D been paying off or have things been floundering?
>>95997356 (OP)Abruptly ran out of prepared material two sessions back when the players went in an unexpected direction, called it half an hour early.
Last session I prepared for this new path and seeded a bunch of lore and mystery and had all I needed and more to run a great session confidently with solid pacing throughout.
So there was a bit of floundering but we're so back.
>>95997356 (OP)>Has your hard work in D&D been paying offNever. I wish I had players who liked the game and not just the idea of it.
I need help as a DM. So I preety much allowed the players to buy items and select feats from 3rd party books in dnd beyond, we play level 18 and oh my god the paladin can slam 500 damage with a +19 to hit and the wizard has a DC of 30 so monsters get deleted fast but I wanna make a fight that actually last long, i plan to make a monster have 1500 hp with an AC of 30+ stacked with resistances and immunities to a ton of conditions. Does this sound fair? I wanted a high tier game myself but im starting to run out of ideas to throw at them.
Would a living lightning bolt and a beholder zombie fight each other if they were lured into the same room? Or would they just chase after the player characters who lured them together?
How would you build The Death Dealer?
>>95997356 (OP)How would you build Battle Beast?
>>95997983Human fighter (Champion)
We started a group with mostly new players and we are having a bit of trouble having to reference the PHB every time we use an ability or spell. I'd like to make a sheet with every player's abilities/spells in one place.
I was thinking on just cutting them from the PDF but wanted to ask first if there isn't an utility to make this easier?
Something like this pic or maybe even something simpler
Is there a dummy’s guide to writing a murder mystery adventure?
>>95997356 (OP)Do you believe in pure evil in your games?
>>95998211Only for supernatural entities.
>>95998193>I'd like to make a sheet with every player's abilities/spells in one place.Instead, make a sheet for each character, with just their own spells. You could call it a character sheet. But really, just have them look up their spells on 5etools, and print screen them on to some kind of paint tool, then print it off.
you/he also don't need to copy over every druid cantrip, just the ones he knows.
Should clerics be nurturing types?
Do you give your players a free feat at level 1? Why or why not?
>>95998482Depends on the domain and god of worship.
A cleric of Umberlee would not be.
>>95992916>I think enabling alternate rules for feats via downtime activities was a mistake. My Cleric is being a weirdo.>>95993516>How so?As a die-hard MMO Mom, she was extremely torn between Paladin and Fighter, neither of them really resonated with her much since they cannot do what she wanted. I told her about the War domain Cleric, and she instantly gravitated towards it. Since she and her husband (my co-worker), with my niece as the last player, are experiencing their first campaign in the form of a relatively short tier one adventure, I decided to take it easy on them with this ruling.
Now, for whatever reason, everybody has been deciding to pool their loot into getting the Cleric training, which has resulted in her having, at level 4, the following:
>Great Weapon Master>Polearm Master>SentinelSo, with her base+origin of 17 STR,12 CON, and 14 WIS, she used her 4th level ASI to get 16 WIS, and then 20 STR through the earned half-feats. Granted, it did take18 weeks of in-setting time (5 weeks, 6 weeks, then 7) and nearly a thousand gold. This woman's goals are simply beyond my understanding.
>local advisor was blackmailing nobility and was found murdered by a fine tipped, slender blade
Okay, I have my premise. How do I go from A to B?
I want multiple suspects each with dirty secrets they would be willing to kill over that the party unravels.
But how do I pick a single suspect to be my killer?
What the fuck from 2024 phb can i reskin to make a vampire character? Goddamn there isn't even a single life drain thing outside vamp touch
>>95998813You have 10 years of supplements, sis. Update one of the vampire races or templates.
>>95998813You might need to try using a book that has what you want instead of one that doesn't.
>>95998851>>95998915I can't because current campaign is phb only
>>95998813Strictly 2024 PHB?
>Species: Chthonic Tiefling>Class: Warlock [Fiend]>Your Pact was with a Vampire Blessed by the hells [Like a Vampire given power by Aclazotz]- you use spells like Command, Charm Person, Charm Monster, Dominate Monster, Geas and Suggestion to have enemies do your bidding, you've got necrotic touches and bites via Chill Touch and Vampiric Touch. You can also use Fire magic to burn down foes. You have access to Insect Plague and Summon Undead to summon creatures of the Night like a Ghostly Hound or Skeleton or Reflavored Vampire Spawn or hordes of Bats (instead of insects).>You can go Pact of the Blade if you want to have a Rapier that deals Necrotic Damage and eventually can get Lifedrinker from it too!
>>95998971Vampires have the bite, the charm, the shape shift, the summoning of bats, the gaseous form, and a few other things.
Sorcerer could work, Druid sorc could get them all but it’s a multiclass mess
>>95998998>>95999003Warlock comes with Gaseous Form as well- though no Polymorph to turn into a Bat sadly. But there are spells like Fly that can give you massive bat wings or Misty Step to let you turn into mist to teleport places.
>>95998998>>95999035Uh, gonna go with this. Thanks
>>95999035True, my first thought was sorc but warlock probably works a bit better w/ the invocations
>>95998777Multiple suspects may be confusing. Should I just go with one?
Everyone in my groups is switching to Daggerheart and PF2E..Why is everyone betraying D&D?
>>95999094Dagger heart just came out
>>95997905Living spells haunt the Mournland and other areas blasted by the Last War, somehow subsisting on ambient magical energy as they writhe and across the landscape. Though they have no need for sustenance, they attack any creatures they come into contact with, lashing out indiscriminately with their corrupted magic.
>>95992964Champion Fighter. Mechanically simple, and any team can always use a heavy hitter.
>>95998582Hey, if the party wants to pool their resources to afford it, then I'd just let it be. They seem to be cool with stacking up on the Cleric and letting her be a walking tank.
Don't you think there should be at least one core race whose native size is large?
>>96000519No, being large fucks with the game’s mechanical balance. That’s why every “should just be large” race has some kind of feat allowing them to push and carry more.
>>95997356 (OP)So, i'm between this Liu Kang build
>https://youtu.be/kNrCQz5UEVo?si=Ce1svSaYIFL7M5bbOr going full Monk with Warrior of the open hand.
for one side, i want to be able to use fire attacks, also the extra HP from warrior levels is nice
By the other side, i want the deflect energy and the Quivering Palm feat.
>>96000519Medium gets you up to 8 or 9 feet in height. You shouldn’t need above that, no.
>>96000519Almost every race in the game is large if you have a wizard in the party.
i need ideas for a ritual to resurrect a dol ghuldur whose soul fragments / lingering essence still reside in the blade that was planted in his back for years
>>96000519I kinda want to play in a party that only uses Small or even Tiny races. I imagine it could be fun.
>>96001695Short kings rise up
Play more halflings
In the new Dragon Delves adventure anthology, Wizards of the Coast presents the following special ability. Supposedly, it is enough to allow a single PC to complete an adventure meant for the entire party.
>Blessing of the Lone Champion
>• Heroic Inspiration. You gain Heroic Inspiration when you finish a Short or Long Rest and whenever the DM has you roll Initiative.
>• Temporary Hit Points. You gain a number of Temporary Hit Points equal to 10 times your level when you gain this blessing and when you gain a level.
Is it really, though? Is this truly enough to compensate for having significantly less action economy and resources on hand?
>>96001695>>96002046How do short races work with grapples?
>>96002147You can only grapple creatures up to one size larger than you
>>96002092>Is it really, though? Is this truly enough to compensate for having significantly less action economy and resources on hand? No.
>>95997356 (OP)>Reading through the new UAWhat in the world made them push Arcane Archer as a fighter sub? Even without going into the fact the subclass is shit, it stinks more like a Ranger than a Fighter who already has Eldritch Knight.
>>95998582if they pooled their resources, then they are all missing stuff so it should be fine, but how in the fuck do they have enough gold to pay for 3 feats?
>nearly a thousand goldBrother, I found your problem. You grossly underpriced your feats.
>>96002092...in theory?
If you're going to be running away, stealthing, and generally avoiding battles, the Heroic inspiration on tap that instantly recharges as soon as you enter battle means you can hide with Heroic Inspiration as either a 2nd or 3rd failsafe (like if you have a cloak of elvenkind), get caught, run, and then hide again with HI again. And, if you get caught again, more HI.
And, if you fail to immediately run away, the extra assload of THP means you can at least take one or two hits.
You can probably complete an adventure solo without it if you cheese things, and it definitely helps cheese things if you cheese the fuck out of it.
>>96002205That's bullshit.
>>96002547You can grapple larger creatures if you're using "climb on a creature" rules but It's for climbing, not stopping an enemy
>>96002205That's not too bad then.
are there any major power store and release mechanics, that player characters have access to without the need of items?
>>96002547Please don't post your selfie here
>>96002269Arcane Archer was printed as a fighter sub years ago, anon.
Running a Spelljammer game and I want a faction to serve as a sort of Helldivers/Starship Troopers sort of force, "liberating" planets.Should I go with >the Githyanki, saving world after world from the Illithid menace, whether that world wants saving or not, and establishing divine rule in Vlaakith's name,
or
>Astral Elves, conquering various solar systems and installing themselves as defacto "peacekeepers" while also draining the planets resources to fuel their expanding empire?
why don't sorcerer feel like avatars of magic?
>>96003433Because they're wizards but shitty
>>96003433play 2024 sorcerer, they're great.
>>95998532Good aligned ones? I guess that still depends on the diety.
>>96003643How are they better?
How do I get my players to simp for my villain? Also is that a good idea?
Do you think this would be a fun miniboss for a level 3 party as an ancient guardian knight of a storm tower? I'm going for the vibe of the dark nut fight from OoT where it gets faster and more dangerous as you cut off its armor. Its also going to have 3 or 4 Ice Mephit minions that I swap all cold damage to lightning.
>24 AC, 60 HP
>Speed 10ft
>Crumbling Armor: When an attack misses this creature its AC permanently reduces by 1 (to a minimum of 10). At 20, 15, and 10 AC this creature gets an additional attack and increases its speed by 10ft
>Innate Spellcasting (DC 12) 3/day: thunderwave (2d8 damage)
>Greatsword +6 to hit 2d6+3 damage
Am I overcooking it with the AC reduction on misses thing? Would it be better if I give it a lower starting AC and just say at certain HP thresholds its AC reduces? I kind of like this way because they dont necessarily have to get it to its most dangerous form if they roll well or the spellcasters focus on using saving throw based spells as those wont damage the armor.
>>96003721>mage rage 2/day>each subclass has spells known, so more spells known over all>ritual casting for free>short rest to regain 1/2 level sorcerery points 1/day
>>96003771if they roll poorly they can easily TPK, so if you play with kiddy gloves, sure, it's an ok fight.
>>95998482Clerics of Loviatar should make sure the party always starts the day with a morning cbt session
Is the unarmed strike of the monk affected by the unarmed fighting style of the warrior? I'm taking it to deal d8 instead of d6 by strike but in dnd Beyond it seems it's not reflected/applied (I don't have any armor/weapon/shield equipped)
Is it worth it or is it a waste of level?
>>96003931check the attack section
>>96003961Don't know if I'm doing something wrong, it only appears the option of a d6
>>96003731Don't dress her like that. She just looks ridiculous.
>>96004022it's probably on beyond's side. they're dog shit. just make your own using the customize option
>halfling world tree barb named sprout
Is that too cheesy?
>>96002269Arcane Archery has always been the domain of fighters.
Rangers tend to be portrayed as archers, but they are hunters, scouts, and trackers, first and foremost, only using archery as a convenient means to an end. For Arcane Archers, their affinity for ranged weapons is their sole, entire livelihood as Fighters. They favor the bow to such an extent that they will study the Arcane and learn to control magic just to enhance their already considerable marksmanship.
>>96003793You also get six metamagics instead of four.
>>96000187Champion is sleeper OP. Just build into crit fishing and multiattacks and you're all set. Even at level 5, you can attack 4 times a turn.
>>96003931The Unarmed Fighting Style is practically useless on a Monk.
>>96004309>You can attack 4 times a turnOnly once per rest though with action surge sadly
>>96003643>>96003793>>96004144That does seem much more powerful, but I've heard 2024 also changed a lot of stuff for the worse and isn't really backwards-compatible like they promised.
>>96004327dual wielding + nick
using a topple weapon/that other advantage mastery
it does work, albeit with limited damage dice
>>96004358It's fine, anyone with a brain can figure it out. It might be hard for people brand new to the hobby to see both versions and not be able to figure it out tho.
a lot of the rules for 2024 are ass, but the content is pretty good.
New DM. Should I use group initiative for identical enemies or per individual enemy? I put numbers on them so it’s not hard to do single initiative.
>>96004391they make encounter sheets
>>96004391Depends on the monster and how many there are in initiative, and the power level of the players
>4 orcs, with two attacks eachdivide them
>9 bug bears with one big attackput them in pairs
you gotta get a feel for it.
what would you have the party fight here? besides water elementals I guess
current context is short dungeon behind waterfall with a jug measurement puzzle in the room before or after. I was thinking a theme of ancient water healers, maybe corrupted, but I might change it so feel free to suggest anything
>>96004423oozes of similar level, they can squeeze through the walls when the water level reaches past the stairs, they can also drop from the ceiling as traps
>>96004358Here's a better explanation. A lot of meta magic got buffed or cheaper, twining got obliterated.
>>96003931Well you would have 1d4 unarmed strikes without it, so it's definitely working. Beyond probably doesn't know how to check the conditions for it to be a d8.
>>96004393>encounter sheetsWut?
>>96004395I left the last session at 4 level 1 characters against 3 mud mephits. Trying to decide if they should all act at once or individually. I’m thinking individually but unsure.
>>96004358>isn't really backwards-compatible like they promised95% of stuff is forwards-compatible (old material with new rules), 4% requires you to use your brain just a little (e.g. the subclass lets me use KI points but I only have FOCUS points!) and 1% is broken (e.g. Shepherd druid).
>>96004529>Wut?I misunderstood your post, nevermind.
>>96003771>Level 3>24 ACThe highest AC for a published monster is 25. Most monsters don't even have 20 AC. I assume they have about +6 to hit, meaning they need an 18 to hit, which is 15%.
>Am I overcooking it with the AC reduction on misses thing?I would use Mirror Image for the plating instead, that has a base of 15 AC. About 3 or 5 images should do. I would not give this thing 4 attacks though. I'd go with 2 attacks once its bloodied, and one Action Surge.
>>96004391I do all enemies at once, separate initiative if there is a miniboss or boss amongst them, and separate initiative for factions in case of 3-way combat.
>>95997885It sounds like you fucked up. Your players are acting on a scale the system was not designed for. Hp, saves and AC no longer have meaning. If you want a longer fight you need to add elements for victory that don't involve fighting to your encounters.
>>95998171Lion-flavored Tabaxi or Goliath Barbarian Path of the Zealot
>>96003731Well you could start by making her boobs bigger
>>96004529>I left the last session at 4 level 1 characters against 3 mud mephits. Trying to decide if they should all act at once or individually. I’m thinking individually but unsure.individually unless you're playing with kiddy gloves, mephits are
>Intelligent>EvilSo if they all took their turn at the same time, they should all attack the weakest person at the same time, possibly downing a player.
>>96005332I'm not that guy, but doesn't that seem more like something a pack animal might do? Like, "If any ally nearby this creature succeeds an attack roll with the "Bite" attack action, it may use its reaction to make a "Bite" attack."
>>96005339Yes, that would also be something a pack animal would do. But take, for example, a zombie or a gray ooze.
>abysmally low INTThis thing has no sense for tactics. It's looking for its next meal, which is usually the closest enemy to it.
>very low wis scorelittle to no sense of self-preservation, so it'll fight to the death.
no, when you go back to the mehpits
>Malicious Elemental Hooligans>Habitat: Planar (Elemental Planes)>Mephits are [mean-spirited tricksters] that dwell on the Elemental Planes. The six most prominent types of mephits resemble halfling-size gargoyles with wings, exaggerated features, and bodies composed of two elements. >Most live self-interested existences, [indulging their warped senses of humor] or overblown egos on their home planes of existence. Some serve as messengers or spies for genies or magic-users.>Mephits resent leaving the elemental extremes where they make their homes. If loosed on the Material Plane or other realms, [they lash out with nasty pranks] or by [tormenting weaker creatures]. When destroyed, mephits explode in a burst of elemental magic.Mephits are smart and cruel, and depending on the setting or circumstances, embrace death as a means of causing more harm and returning to their plane sooner.
>>96005400Okay, that makes more sense.
>>96004376Barbarian dip is probably worthwhile if you're optimizing number of attacks
>>96004529>3 mephitsIndividual. If you roll low on group initiative they'll all be destroyed before they do anything.
>>96005414yea, if you take a pack animal for example
>wolf>just as dumb as a zombie>but "wiser" than a commonerThey hunt by instinct, and they absolutely have a sense of self-preservation and should run after getting hurt
Also, a big fan of the LotR wolves and their "fear of fire" trait. A lot of normal animals should have similar features.
>>96004358>I've heardPlay the game nigger.
>>96005804I don’t have the books yet. I’m stuck in 2014land
>>96005829The rules are free. And what, are you playing off DnD beyond? Just steal a PDF online.
>>96005804I am playing the game, as printed in 2014.
>Nobody's schedules ever line up
Why do I even bother bros? The scheduling demon is the cruellest and most powerful force imaginable.
>>96003731Bigger bewbs.
Make her mute.
>>96006039I'm sorry to say, Anon, but some of those people have shitty jobs or are, more likely, lying.
>>96006039Felt. I and one friend work 7-4 Monday through Friday, the other two in my group have erratic schedules that make planning difficult.
>>96006039I just picked a prime time spot on Saturday evening and have been sticking to it for the last 10 years. Maybe 4-5 weeks out of the entire year get cancelled. Feels good man.
So how's the new UA? Anything useful or is it trash?
>>96006723Arcane archer is cool. I unironically can't remember anything else.
Will there be any problems playing a 2024 fighter with a party of people still using regular 5e classes
>>96007319other than that the fighter will have an incredibly unusual amount of utility compared to what is expected, not really.
I will also say, anecdotally, that dex-based Champions getting adv. on initiative is mildly frustrating, as you can expect them to be going first in the turn-order roughly 144,927% of the time assuming they have Alert and 20 Dex by level 6
You think a noble merchant lord being the worshipper of a god of trickery and deceit is enough of a reason to blackmail them and for them to murder said blackmailer?
>>96007500Murder seems a bit extreme. I would try to define how damaging, exactly, this revelation would be for the Noble Merchant Lord, were this bit of trivia to be made known to his:
>family>closest servants and confidants>allies>acquaintances>domain's public and its layperson>enemiesand then decide the appropriate response, based on your answer to the blackmailer's given level(s) of dissemination. It seems much more likely to me, given his religious prerogative and noble disposition, that he'd be more likely to entice them employment via a far more lucrative offer, only to then betray him at a later date.
>>96007628He’s also a racial supremacist but that doesn’t really seem like a big deal. The god is generally worshipped by criminals but “dark rites” are performed in her honor to grant the performer power in their life, in exchange their soul is devoured by her in the after life.
Should I add in some humanoid sacrificing to spice things up?
I guess I could make the nobleman a red herring if I needed too.
>>96007391They already did under the 2014 rules
>>96007681Anon, I have utterly zero way of knowing how pertinent all of this is. You know what's going on in your world, we do not. You can't withhold information like this and expect us to give you legitimately helpful advice.
>Racial supremacistOkay, what race? How racist? By chance, are every one of your players part of that race? This doesn't seem like a sincere plot point. It's half-baked and comes off as an epic dogwhistle for your buddies to giggle over. Nobody cares if you hate niggers, man; Nobody doesn't. Develop it properly and make it meaningful, or get rid of it. Half-assed jokes are never worthwhile.
>Short-term gain for unending sufferingAn eternity is a very long time. Human(oid)s are incredibly short-sighted, but this is borderline moronic. This needs to be explained, Anon. In real life, Nobility were extremely well-educated for their time and understood how to read, as well as had a reasonably complex understanding of logic. Consider the plausibility of this man being manipulated by her.
>Mysterious religion fuelled by "dark rites"I think what you need to do is take this all back to the drawing board. Not even Shar from Forgotten Realms is this much of a cunt with her willing followers. What exactly are the rites doing? How is this goddess being empowered by these rites? What does she gain from them? What kind of powers are so tempting that someone with a comfortable life would be willing to sacrifice everything for them?
>>96007717>Already didDid what?
>Advantage on initiativeNo, they didn't. At best, you'd receive a +3. That's quite a bit weaker.
>UtilityToo niche or too high level for it to ever be relevant.
>>96007764You raise very good points. I will have to think more about this.
>>96007764Nta but chill out fagoli. Cultist noble is like Plot101.
>>96007936The plot isn't the problem, the problem is lack of narrative cohesion. If the Anon didn't care about his story, he wouldn't have come here asking for advice. I despise unseriousness in writing. I didn't tell him that his story was shit, I told him to consider things he didn't.
>>96007964How is it unserious? He clearly just wanted more reasoning for the bad guy to be bad.
>>96003931You'll have d8 damage dice with unarmed attacks on monk in like one or two levels, I'm not sure why you'd want to go fighter for something you're going to get naturally when you could just go more monk.
>>96007500not really, unless your blackmail was harming their family. A lot of the other shit you mentioned is irrelevant.
what's a good reason for a female orc to leave her clan and be a murderhobo
>>96008289She doesn’t want to be a breeding sow
>>96007764>>96008273>just keep paying blackmail foreverI don’t want to be relying on movies for my narratives, but wasn’t this the motivation to kill Mr. Body in Clue?
Is it really so outlandish?
>>96008356Depending on how much the blackmail is, and how wealthy the nobleman is, yea. Another word for blackmail is bribery and people are always willing to do that.
What is important, rather than the god worship or the racial hatred or their title or their profession: What are they being blackmailed with?
>>96008388They are being blackmailed with information that could potentially end their career or destroy their reputation.
>>95998971Then play something out of the PHB instead, that's what your DM clearly wants.
>>96005829Unless they've been removed the books are in the OP
>>96008398>vague, vague, vague,So you haven't thought of anything, and that's why his motivation is weak. The other guy is right. Go back to the drawing board or if you want to give him a reason to kill his blackmailer, threaten the well-being of his family, or make the nobleman so powerful that hiring a hitman is cheaper than the blackmail.
>>96008398Also, this whole conversation changes if he worships lloth
>>96005116Did you forget that leonin exist, anon?
>>96004423Crazed nymph or water goddess, corrupted by some kind of dark magic. Once she loses enough HP, the spell is broken and she can send the party on a quest to stop whoever did this to her.
>>96005804I played 2014. Haven't had a chance to try 2024. I've just been hearing about things like all races being the same now, lots of stuff being sanitized or censored, and 2014 monsters and content not working right in 2024.
>>96008289Looking for a sorcerer to breed with to create children with her strength and his magic.
>>96008775It's hyperbole. The stats shift from races to backgrounds is kind of lame, but adjust as you will.
>>96004445Looking over the class description now. I don't like how they changed your sorcerous origin into a subclass that you choose at level 3. That's dumb. It should be there from the beginning.
>>96008942yea, that is the only retarded thing about it.
they should have added an optional rule that experienced players should have their subclasses at 1st level.

So are you supposed to be able to mix and match every individual aspect of 5e and 5.5, or are you supposed to go all-in on one or the other, or are you only allowed to mix and match certain parts? Sorry if this is a stupid question. I've been away from D&D for a couple years and only recently learned of 5.5's existence.

>When I worked at TSR, there was always basically a truism in cover art--the central figure had to be a white male. >So, when D&D was bought by WotC and we started working on 3E, we really felt that this was a time when we could break this mold. We worked with the artists to create iconic characters of different ethnicities (both in appearance and in name) and with equal representation of male and female. At some point in the process, someone said, "hey, you don't have a male human fighter in the mix.>Regdar intruded his way into 3E, empowered by marketing and sales people. At the last minute, in a matter of just those few short weeks, the old TSR standard reared its ugly head. Not only was Regdar on the scene, he was in the spotlight. This was the character that would be on the cardboard standees and other promotional items, and would usually take center stage in the covers. I was caught entirely off-guard and was far too late to even comment on him. Now, to his credit, the initial Regdar artist, Todd Lockwood, made Regdar's ethnicity kind of vague. (Regdar had shown up in Todd's earlier sketches when he designed the look of 3E armor.) It's only in later artwork that Regdar seems to be pretty clearly the white male fighter we tried to avoid. And to the credit of a number of people--artists, art directors, designers and editors alike--our disdain for Regdar made its way into a lot of art. If you look closely, Regdar is getting thrashed on most of the early pieces he shows up in. (Look for his ignominious fate on the original DM's Screen, for example.)TSR were based as fuck and I miss them.

As a writer, how dangerous is it for me to be running approximately 8 different plots at the same time? Does anyone know any creative writing resources that deal with multiple coinciding storylines? I am early enough into my Eberron campaign project that I could absolutely pull back on some, or even all, of the convolutions for simplicity's sake, but I am somewhat constrained by a time limit of about a week.
In a nutshell, I'm looking at:
>the storyline for the [McGuffin] (1)
>character arcs for each of my four players (4)
>two players sharing the same faction of Dragonmarked house (1)
>the other two belong to separate but similar military units in service of the same country, presumably under the same overarching chain of command (2?)
>the plot [of the Enemy] (1)
>the plot(s) of [the other Dragonmarked houses] (2-11)
So far, I've written about a paragraph at minimum for everything, essentially establishing their relevancy to the PCs and/or their factions. I intend to leave it here for now, and remain narratively flexible, following my players' actions, but my concern lies in both the near and distant future. There's also the sheer customizability of the setting; as the campaign progresses, I'm going to need to start weaning off of the established lore and start building increasingly more and more of my own. How does one even began to organize and manage all of that?
>>96010852i think champions should be one of those "sepcific beats general" type things. make it so that your champions crits are special and ignore immunity to critical hits or something. that seems like a simple if not balanced bandaid to me

How much movement does this take, the brown square being a solid 5 ft. ledge?
My reading is that it's 5 ft to walk up, then you have to climb 5 ft so that's 5x2 = 10 ft, but since you can't go diagonally through the space of solid objects, that only gets you to the middle square where you're sorta just holding onto the ledge and you still have to move 5 more ft. to get on top of it properly - so it's 20 ft total.
Is that right or am I missing something
>>96011402No? What? There is nothing to fix. Ignoring crits is such a minute and niche feature that hardly anyone has it. There no need top add it to the champion to ignore it.
>>96011539If moving diagonally costs 5ft, then so does climbing one 5ft ledge. thats how i've always played it.
>>96011539I'd agree, but I'd allow an easy athletics check to save some movement with the height and momentum of a running high jump to save some movement.
You'd need to fly or have 14 Strength and another 5 feet of a run up to get there in 10 feet.
>>96011544Unless you have a climbing speed, climbing costs twice as much movement.
>>96011566Even if you think you can go diagonally through hard corners, climbing costs extra movement.
>>96011544Here's what my understanding is based on
1 - climbing without a climb speed costs double movement
2 - you can't go diagonally through corners, like walls. And I think that still applies with vertical corners?
>>96011586>>96011588I've never seen a DM treat a 5ft ledge as a climb, but you are right, its technically a climb.

5.5 monster balance is decent within its own constraints. To figure the 5.0 CR of a 5.5 monster, you'll need to add 4 if it's tier IV or add 1 if it's tier II or III, and at tier I it's mostly ok but be aware of big changes like "5.0 is designed around creatures that resist nonmagical weapon damage and 5.5 isn't" and "many effects are delivered on-hit instead of also having a save in 5.5" (not a 5e philosophy but 5.5 imported it), as well as minor stuff like "having two heads grants immunity not advantage to a huge pile of stuff".
5.0's encounter builder also very quickly ramped up how difficult it thought encounters with multiple creatures were- a solo creature would count as its listed XP (often a bad encounter as well, with it possibly one shotting guys and being totally overwhelmed by PC action economy), two would be a 50% boost to effective challenge, and then like 3-6 would be double. But that's a huge range, and having three of something is often not going to be that big of a deal. Still, this logic was helpful for designing stuff that would eat your PCs.
5.5 changes this by totally leaving this step out, which is actually not great at all if you use it straight, especially at low levels.
5.0's high level CRs were never perfect at high level and 5.5's CRs are better there, but it was never hard to fix that in 5.0.

>>96017149I'm not doing all these acrobatics. You just ruined the DW feat for light weapons by removing its extra attack, all so you can add an extra theoretical 1 damage to your attacks with your battleaxe.

>>96017044Dunno why I thought handaxe had Nick, disregard that part.
Still, you can dual wield without issue; you just can't make more attacks with two battleaxes than you could with one.
>>96017087>>96017121>no, it doesn't count unless I say it does>>96017149>acrobatics to defendWe're simply explaining that you can in fact dual wield battleaxes, and I suggested how you could achieve your fantasy and get the same number of attacks as you used to by reflavouring, with a mistake that suggested you could get more attacks that way.
My 2014 sorcerer has War Caster and a decent weapon attack mod, and they could dual wield a spellcasting focus and a +1 weapon for opportunity attacks with Booming Blade using the weapon. They can't make any more attacks that way (in fact, they wouldn't want to), but they can dual wield for tangible benefit.
You're obviously not wrong that the new Dual Wielder doesn't enable something the old one did. The reason is that they redesigned the two-weapon fighting options and while it's generally now more powerful, you now can't proc AND make additional attacks with non-light weapons. Something changed between editions and you don't get the same options you used to. It is what it is.

>>96017378End at the crossroads and force the party to decide before the next session and let you know so that you can prepare. If ending at the crossroads is impossible, prepare quick filler and railroad or bait (high rewards) your players into it, so that the session does end at the crossroads.

Really your "enhanced dual wielding" could just be added to the real feat, and frankly this feat would be better if it wasn't a half feat and had more budget (another 5.5 oopsie-woopsie).

Two enemies, one is the has the eldritch spear + spell sniper combo able to attack the party from 300+ ft away, the other is his spotter with eyes of the eagle. I want to build an adventure around these two as the main antagonists. How do I build the encounter so the players get feeling of taking cover from sniper fire trying to figure out how to reach them without getting blasted that would be fun and engaing?
>>96019195Except Dual Wielder doesn't explicitly give you an extra attack. What the feat says it does is let you use two weapon fighting with one weapon that doesn't have the Light property, and does it in such a silly a roundabout way that you accidentally get an extra attack, but only if you combine it with a Nick weapon and completely disregard the ability it gives you to ignore Light for one of your weapons. That is, objectively, awful ivory tower design. Also,

Man, I wasn’t expecting the emotions here to be so complicated. The campaign has been such a fixture of our lives for so long, but I’m also relieved to finally be able to release the tension. One of the players is already talking about something he wants to run, and I have some fun character ideas for that, but I’m also going to miss the characters they’ve been fucking around with thus far. I’m going to have more free time, since I no longer have to write ten pages of notes between sessions, but it was such a satisfying way of spending it.
>>960197102024 has a few improvements, but it breaks more than it fixes. Based on the direction of the UA articles we’ve seen, the design direction’s only getting worse from here.

>>96019392>What the feat says it does is let you use two weapon fighting with one weapon that doesn't have the Light property This is not what it's for, it's for getting the extra attack when combined with nick. One attack from your action, a second attack from the light weapon property (also part of your action because of nick), and a third attack from dual wield.
That's what it's for, that's what it does.
>You don't know shit about 2024, do you? Turning everything into half feats was a big mistake 5.5 made. It's worse design than 5.0's feats by a lot.
Anyway, claiming that the real purpose of the dual wield feat is like +1 damage when it actually gives you an extra attack that can in turn grant you advantage sometimes? I'm not sure why you'd say that at all.
Anyway, the feat written I responded to SUCKS ASS because, as written, it doesn't do what the real 5.5 feat does- make an extra attack. It's +1 damage and it's worthless and no one will ever take it if you houserule that over the real one, because the entire point, the extra attack, is removed.
I want to be a charismatic politicking leader of men like Hernan Cortez. What is the best class that represents this?
If you were running a game where the modern and futuristic firearms were available, how much do you think would be a fair asking price for the ammunition? The DMG states that the bullets from modern firearms are destroyed on use, but at DMs discretion, Energy Cells can be recharged with the proper equipment.
If you were to have the energy cells recharge on a long rest, what would a fair price for each one be, given the high damage the weapons they fuel deal?
Bullets in the PHB state they are 3gp for 10. Would you use the same bullet pricing for Renaissance firearms as modern ones, or would you make them cost more?
How much would you make a frag grenade and the launcher cost?
