Best version of gun magic was the castor gun
>>95997999 (OP)Outlaw star in general was a pretty good setting.

Wondering best setting where this would be for this.

Would only really work if there was a d100 table for surprise mishaps. And obviously Vancian materials requirements and memorization is replaced by haggling for caster shells and hoping for good rolls. Kills the magic user as a class, and takes away the toolbox of utility spells. I guess in a technological setting you would use gadgets for that kind of stuff.
Does fit really well in a the right kind of dying earth setting. A techno fantasy one where an actual caster is impossible, but distilling mana into charged shells is something plausible. But Dark Sun style where every spell you shoot kills the rainforest.
A hybrid of the diesel powered space travel of Lensman, the hyper polluted earth of Bladerunner, and a generous helping of late 80's shoulder pads. Would be cool.
Maybe someday the rest of the Outlaw Star manga will get translated too.
Guns can never be magical.Unless they're something enchanted by some devil so you can always land your shot, guns are simply just not magical.

>>95998105>d100 table for surprise mishapsIt's not that unpredictable. Load a shell, get a spell. Better spells are rarer and more expensive. They should definitely do bizarre things on the upper end, but it's not like you have to use those unless you're in a tight spot.

Personally, I liked how the Iron Kingdoms (d20/3.5) did their gun mages. They were either casting spells through the gun as an implement, which damaged the gun, or making their own magical rounds with spells imbued into the bullet, primarily ray and touch spells. They could create semi-magical guns that didn't take spell damage, like a rune-inscribed pistol or rifle. Lorewise, it was a new development, following the widespread production of firearms, so there was lots of resentment from entrenched magic users and great interest from national militaries looking to exploit the new thing. Lots of room to explore.
>>95997999 (OP)Give me a gun-witch that flies around on a musket or other long gun as if it were a broom, and then has a handgun as a sidearm or to use while she is flying on the longer gun.
>>95997999 (OP)>castor gunDo you clean it with castor oil?
>>95998017Sword World has spellguns that work very similarly to caster guns. The main difference is the bullet itself is "blank" until the Artificer charges it with a spell just before firing rather than the spell being stored within the bullet itself
>>95998604This is why I like the concept. Could be part of PC's background is maybe they are hunting for the rarest shells or maybe need to find some way to make new shells.
>>95998105>>95998604Casters aren't really unreliable. You get an occasional dud shell, but it doesn't seem that common. The screwball ones are the ones which require more ambient magic than remains in the cosmic background so they just drain some of the user's soul. That black hole shell was one of those.
Casters are rare because they're considered antiques, not because they're unreliable.
>>96003426There was an anime about that. Pretty gay one at that.
Gunwitches have their guns as familiars in Pathfinder 2e. Was a pretty interesting class. Hope my players suffer mightily from her hex bullets.
