It's that time of the month again, post your favorite terrain and terrain making tutorials and ask terrain related questions
What are (You) currently working on?
>>96003614Really nice. I like them
>>96003650These turned out very well, and so simple too. Can we see the reverse side?
Hacked out some quick and dirty pipe terrain for Necromunda ( for a game that ended up being cancelled....)
It was an easy project. Assembled random pvc pipe connectors and kids toy pipes, glued them to an old clipboard, spray primed a rusty brown, then stippled dollar store craft paints in various metallic and brown hues all over to give it a mottled rusty look. Poured a shitty green paint through the pipes and let it run for the sewer effect.By no means is it a display piece, but if you think you are too retarded to make functional terrain, try this one out.

Some random boomers terrain I saw in a FB group. Note the mini at the front for scale
>>96009983That'd be good for something like Threnodyssey.
>>96002715 (OP)Still going on the ork terrain. Iโve base coated at least. Nice inspiration in these threads at least.
>>96005651Thank you, anon. I just put sealer on them right after this pic.
>>96010875Fucking angles, how do they work.
I finally have a table and will soon have a game matt so I need to get started on building terrain. Any youtubers you'd reccomend for somebody who hasn't made any terrain before?
>>96009983I would add more rust effect
>>96011663Is that a specific product, or do you mean paint on more rust? Currently I just stipple brown and use agrax wash mixed with orange.

These are from a Star Wars Doorables range of squishy toys.
>>96011845Looking good, I'm going to make some more paper terrain myself. Some of mine got squished recently (toddlers) but I can always just print more.
>>96011912These are the cheapest ones I've ever seen. >https://www.wargamestournaments.com/product/shipping-containers-28mm-terrain/
The shipping cost is a bit high to the US but if you're in UK or Europe you won't find any cheaper than this
>>96012157That's what I like about it. It's cheap, looks better than L shaped ruins, essily transportable and you don't care if it gets fucked up.
Bought a 3d printed bridge off of eBay. It needs the layer lines sanding, but fir ยฃ6.99 I'm very happy with it. Planning to update my terrain collection this year, and a new river is one of the things on the cards.

Not gonna let this thread die. Gonna post some of my other finished stuff.
Heres an altar/well thing I made for frostgrave.
One of my first projects was this bridge. Gonna try to do a newer better version at some point.
Bunch of stone walls i made.
>>96022140>>96022150>>96022187What are the bricks made from? Foamboard?
>>96022998Xps isolation foam.
>>96022187Damn, those walls are amazing
>>96011845Sick. Did you get it somewhere or bash your own?
>>96022150The walls are good, but the bridge is amazing imo.
>>96022140>>96022150>>96022187>>96023416How did you make the rough stony texture?
>>96025385Nta, but there's two easy ways. You grab some small rocks from outside and then either manually press them into the foam, or you make your bricks and then throw them and some small stones into a tupperware or bowl or something and shake it up. Either way, it imprints the stony texture into the foam.
>>96022140 That looks pretty cool. I take it you've never heard of dakhmas/towers of silence?
>>96025385Anons got the right of it. I Dump a bunch of cut bricks into a plastic jar with a hand full of rocks. Shake around for a bit. Instant stone texture.
My dog hates it when I do it.
>>96025385An aluminum foil ball run over the foam adds a nice texture too, imo.
>>96012546nice one anon, I'm too much of a pussy to sand 3d printed stuff myself, something in my brain says no to accidentally breathing that stuff in despite having destroyed my brain using plastic glue in an unventilated bedroom since my teenage years
>>96027576I agree, I think it also allows you to have more control of the texture too. But if you need to do hundreds of bricks in a short time a handful of rocks in a plastic container is the best way to go.
>>96013303Nah it's not ready to be shared yet, things are still half painted. Soon.
>>96015292>Shark Planet Okay, this game looks excellent. Time to get myself some shark miniatures.
>>96002715 (OP)I need to make more woodlands terrain for my old world Beastmen
>>96030863Very Nice. I need to do some trees.
Hey Anons, do 28mm scale tall trees exist? The trees I find on places like AliExpress barely qualify as mid sized trees at their tallest.
>>96034404The short answer is sorta. Small trees exist, but in 28mm a medium sized tree is easily a foot tall. You can find some on Ali/temu or Etsy, but they're $15-30 each which makes even a small wood very expensive.
>>96028445Dust mask and proper ventilation, fren.
>>96036631 I feel like there might be a market for cheaper plastic ~12" trees
I am finally making a proper wargaming table instead of using a neoprene mat like a bitch. Posted picrel in the WIP thread with a brief explanation of what I'm trying to do:
>>96041909
>>96041920There are some out there. Not they're not very good. Or cheap.
https://a.co/d/1E7uWJf
What is a good but relatively inexpensive material to use as the base for tiles for a board? Is there anything that is not prone to warping without being heavy?
>>96042994Two layers of cardboard hot glued together.
>>96042994Insulation foam, if you're not worried about thickness.
>>96042994Multiple layers of cardboard glued together (number of layers depends on what you're trying to do with the board). Specifically moving boxes from either Home Depot or Lowe's (or your local equivalent) since they are made to be sturdier and more durable than regular cardboard. They're cheap too. Their large size box (27" width, 15" length "16 depth) gives you a good amount of cardboard to work with and will only cost you about $3 a box at the most.
>>96042994Depending on the size needed, flooring tiles can be pretty good. The linoleum/plastic ones aren't gonna rip or tear, can be cut with a knife, don't warp, and some even have a gripping material on the bottom that helps prevent sliding.
>>96042994Cake trays
1 foot, thick, easy to work with
>>96044141Cake board.

Couldn't remember what it was called!!
Mostly working on miniatures at the moment, but I moved to my new place and finally got to use some of my terrains for a game.
Ok folks, how do I do ponds, lakes, marshes and such, so it doesnโt warp when drying?
>>96028445It's an ftm print (think that's it) so regular old plastic. I avoid messing with resin as much as possible.
Imo foams are way better than cardboard
Wet (after painting) cardboard tends to lose its shape and fall apart here and there, with foam you don't have to worry about it
>>96044692Your terrain warps because all the paint, glue, etc is applied to only one side, so when the stuff dries snd contracts, it only pulls in one directions.
Next time tkmd you make a pond, paint both smthe top and bottom of the base with some mod podge, let it dry, then paint on your pond.
Also use a sturdy base to begin with. I've been buying cheap clipboards from the dollar store for terrain bases. They work great.
Get the pic related kind.
>>96046138Sorry for the spelling errors, I am obviously too retarded to type on a phone.
>>96046144I'm convinced that phones change spelling long after you type something. Because even with an external keyboard anything typed in a phone always ends with random spelling mistakes and words missing.
On a scale from โUsed a teaspoon of my roommateโs peanut butter without telling himโ to โgave chocolate to his dogโ, how much of a dick move would it be to steal this sign from a company in the office to cut it in pieces and use it as a base for terrains?
It looks perfect
>>96046138>paint both smthe top and bottom of the base with some mod podgeAs in โboth facesโ? (Then how would you do that?) or โcover the full surface in mod podgeโ?
I've just finished my dwarven gate/side entry to a hold. If anyone is interested, in the process I can share some WIP pics. Although, as you can guess by looking at it, it wasn't a complicated process.
>>96047849I love dwarf stuff. Show me please.
>>96047997The main structure was built around two pieces of foam, a base from MDF, and a gate made by Archon Studio (the set is called Entances pack). Everyhing was glued together with montage glue and some barbecue skewers were added for stability between between the mountain face and terrace. In the pic you can see that the terrace is partially carved and partially covered by bricks and plates. With painting you can mix both styles easily. As for the gate it's balsa wood with plastic cross bars and nail decorations as rivets.
>>96042595 Yeah, those look pretty awful. Doing a little bit of digging, the wire based ones on Etsy can be found for a little bit cheaper and they look much better.
>>96048067After that I've used a bunch of rock molds, bark (in some cases bark was smashed with a hammer to get some fine grain), and sand. I've glued the rocks first (they were cast in tier III dental plaster), and then I was filling the gaps between with small and smaller stuff. After that, everything got a layer of mod podge mixed with black paint, then black primer and zenithal highlight with white. When it comes to painting, it was mostly a mix of undertones (red, green, blue, and brown) that were dry-brushed with grays and then toned down with inks once more after tufts and moss were glued on.
>>96047101Yes, both faces. Before I ever use a base, I paint both sides and all edges with mod podge mixed with a little bit of water, and set it up so that the maximum amount of surface area can dry out. After this, I find you can glue and paint the top side as much as you want with no warping.
-------
Question for the thread, anyone have a simple way to scratch build stairs? Grimdark/Sci fi stuff preferably
>>96042994You have a lot of options. If you want to go cheap, you can always hit up a store for the cardboard used to ship stock that's then discarded. Not sure if recycling centers will give away materials, but that might be an option as well.
made an mdf, aluminum foil, and hot glue base for these ruins
>>96048825I don't think the foil texture is a great fit, but it'd make a great freshly-cooled lava flow.
>>96049050I ran out of tile grout, had a bit of a deadline to get it done for a game last saturday
>>96048179Butโฆ likeโฆ how do you prevent it from sticking to whatever itโs laying on? Do you suspend it with clothespins?
Or do you paint one side, let it dry, then paint the other side?

>>96049902nta but poking a small hole and suspending items from that with string on a stick or chunk of threaded rod works well enough if you want to paint both sides of things. Works for machine parts too. With the carbboard you can fill the hole later with a bit more of the modgepodge, spackle, whatever you're up to.

I brought it up with a mate of mine once while we were playing a campaign game of warhammer and he reckoned it may be to do with the standard software on the phone, he uses 3rd party apps for his keypad and never has this issue, and we both use the same brand(Samsung).
>>96069211Nowadays it's probably the AI autocorrect going extra haywire. >>96044692>ponds, lakes, marshes and suchOne quick way to make these is to cut shapes out of a plastic tablecloth cover. You paint a water gradient on the reverse side, and then you get the gloss of the plastic cover on the presentation side.
They don't look as substantial as water features made from 3D materials, but they are also as close as you can get to water features that exist at the correct height without cutting into a tiled board. Water features that stand above the surface of the board always look a bit off.

>>96015292If you don't mind spending maybe a buck a sheet, go to your local crafts store and look in the scrapbooking section; they sell corrugation with the cladding already off one side (and other weird textured papers you might be able to use).
>>96042994If you have access to it, foamed PVC sheet (AKA Sintra). Only thing that can warp it is heat. Big box stores sell it for @ $10/sq ft, sign makers might be willing to part with scrap bits.
Does anyone know a good sealant for cork? I was planning on using some to make lava and a volcanic region, but I need a good sealant to paint them first. I heard there was a really good water gel that simulated cooling lava, but I forgot the name of it if anyone could help me.
Heat gunned some styrofoam and then glued it to an MDF backing, hit it with a base layer of acrylic caulk and brown/black acrylic paints, drybrushed with successively lighter browns over a day or so. Got it to where I'm happy with it, really like the texture the styrofoam emulates with that sort of bogged down muddy terrain that's seen a lot of foot traffic through it.
Next up is making modular grass to lay over the top of it once the stuff arrives in the next week or so, plus other bits of scatter terrain. The idea is that I can lay this down as-is for a muddy battlefield or put down modular bits to convert it to a muddy-ish field with plant life etc.
Got another two of these unpainted that I'm thinking I'll do up in a gray stone and brown-red stone with additional texture from sand to create different surface textures on the other boards, plus a bit extra from foamcore glued ontop.
>>96069558Its a mix of foam board, insulation foam, and cork board
>>96002715 (OP)Thank you for being here terrain thread. We need this.
To any terrain board makers, how have you made forests work for rank and flank? I don't really want seperate scatter terrain because it will look ugly. Pins seem like they would degrade foam really fast. Magnets seen like a good idea but getting them to not rip up foam seems annoying.
>>96091439Im looking at making terrain that has slots for me to set a tree with a base into it so that I can add or remove trees as needed.
>>96091485Do you have an example you're working off of?
>>96091569Nope. I'm in the planning stage. I haven't really look though.
>>96091439If your forests are going to be flat and you have a jigsaw and a set of hole cutters for your drill you can make bases with insets to take out individual trees. Easy to magnetise if you have overly large top-heavy trees. Probably some premade laser cut ones out there too.
Many people use cloth to outline the forest and have individually based trees or copses that they plonk down on top of that.
>>96091439Use non-neodymium magnets. You don't need insanely strong forces to adhere a piece of scatter terrain to your board. If your magnets are pulling up foam when you attempt removing your scatter terrain, that's using the wrong magnet for that purpose.
People default to the extremely strong magnets because a strong bond force is preferable on, say, individual miniatures having equipment swapped out. There's zero reason to use them for terrain. Magnetised terrain features are to hold them in place against jostling the table, not to essentially glue them down.
Find a suitable variety of magnet for your usecase, figure out the goldilocks zone on how far below the foam you need to embed them while retaining a decent amount of attractive force on any magnetised terrain and then do up a jig tool that pre-cuts that depth into your foam for easy removal and then gluing back in.
>>96091439Literally just sit the trees on the forest base.
No magnets, no pins, no insets.
Just build a tree on a miniature base, dress that base so it also looks like forest floor, put lead under the base if you think it will be topheavy, and then place the tree base on the forest section.

>>96080804Very very interesting. I painted a plastic tablecloth on my first attempt at making battle mat, but I got the impression that the acrylic paint never really dried (it stayed a bit sticky).
Should I prepare the surface somehow?
>>96112054I bet you wanted to kill someone when you finished those tiles and realized one of the roads didn't line up.
>>96103922Great job anon!
Not a criticism of your work, but a minor pet peeve of mine is seeing these plastic trees looking like perfectly kept palm trees used to represent wild/prehistoric tropical jungles.
Palm trees left to themselves should look like pic related.
But when I built my own jungle scatter, I only had toy palm trees from a dinosaur toy set, so I had to swallow my pride and use them as is, because I genuinely have no idea how to easily model unkept trees without spending multiple hours per tree and keeping them useable in game
>>96115877Mine feel like they "stick" to themselves but don't feel sticky to the touch or stick to anything else.
I don't do anything to prepare the surface. If you are paranoid about it I would just try a varnish after the paint is on.
>>96115980NTA but if he's going for actual jungle trees they won't be the more arid climate palm trees like that. Just check out many of the trees in the amazon rainforest, they look a lot like his terrain piece with thin trunks and long fan-like leaves.
How important are things like rivers? I want to make my terrain a little more dynamic.
>>96119044Depends on the setting and available tools.
Do you have jump jets, airborne troops, aircraft, bridge layers? Or maybe flying monsters, magic carpets, teleportation spells?
>>96086108Consider an acrylic sealant/caulk. Works really well on a variety of applications. You can mix paint in with it as well as other materials like sand to change the colour and texture also, making it an all-in-one texture paint/primer/sealant.
>>96115738Tips to avoid bubbles from resin pouring; if you don't have a pressure vessel, look up tutorials on how to pour your resin onto a stick to minimise bubbles. Also get one of those little handheld butane torches; a quick flick over the surface will pop bubbles present.
Hey guys I've got two questions.
1. If I mix craft glue with black acrylic paint does that really work as a primer?
2. Can I use acrylic paint on XPS foam?
>>96120177To the first; yes, but it requires either grabbing other people's ratios or experimenting on your own. Depending on how you value your time versus costs it might be preferable to just buy a ready made primer instead. There's also the risk of getting your mixture wrong for the purpose and it screws your project.
To the second, for paint on xps foam, yeah. There's no problems with that. Be aware that if you're using rattlecans, some of the propellants may chemically react and melt the foam.
At the end of the day, I recommend doing test pieces. No matter how much anecdotal evidence is given out by people online things can turn out contrary to their own experiences. Try things for yourself and see if they work.
>>96120245Thank you very much
>Depending on how you value your time versus costs it might be preferable to just buy a ready made primer instead.you might be right about that, I wanted to avoid spraycans that's why I thought about mixing it myself but there are some to paint (just very well hidden on amazon).
>>96120177Army painter has a set of spray paints in a few colors that are foam-friendly.
As fort me, I prefer the paint + modgepodge combo.
Can I just paint over MDF terrain or do I need to prime it first?
>>96120177Modge podge and black apple barrel paint is what I do. Its easy, fast and works really well while adding strength to your build.
>>96122071>>96120410>Modge podgeYes I heard about that but where I live it's as expensive as real primer. Google said an alternative would be (white) craft glue which is cheap. But I will now just get a premixed gray primer.
Ok I want to start buying stuff tomorrow and before I order from amazon I will check local stores. This is the shopping list please let me know if I missed anything.
>xps foam>x acto knife (for the details) and a boxcutter to cut the foam into smaller pieces>primer>the acrylic colors I want to use>some paint brushes >clear paint for the topcoat
>>96122597If you want bespoke basing material for terrain, I recommend PVC foam, you can find people selling cut-offs on ebay from sign making.
>>96122000Yes.
To clarify, it's not a question of paint adhesion since MDF is pretty good on that front, but sealing - MDF is ridiculously thirsty and if you plan to do anything fancier than basic colors + drybrushing, it'll suck up all the moisture from paint, possibly including the paint itself, which is pretty noticeable on the finished result.
>>96122702>selling cut-offsOr just befriend a local advertising company and have them give you their trash for free.
>>96122861Thank you, do you think I should seal the MDF using PVA?
>>96103938Cool, let's see it when it's finished

So a "wash" is just paint with a lot of water?
>>96127303More or less yes. Basically a wash is just a paint that has been diluted with a medium that will thin it and help it flow around more. A glaze is basically the same thing but thinned down even further with the intent to apply in layers over a surface to slowly tint it. You can make any paint into a wash, but it is easier/better to thin down inks to make washes due to how their pigmentation is concentrated.
>>96127401>but it is easier/better to thin down inks to make washesI just like to use paints for washes. I can choose any color I have. About 5-6 drops per drop of paint usually works for vallejo stuff which is what my LGS sells. Pre-made washes work super well, not sure what they do differently. As much as I hate GWs their washes like nuln oil and agrax earth shade are top notch.
more progress. decided to make it all one level by putting the can on a piece of foam
>>96122071>>96122597Mod podge is just a diluted craft glue. It's value comes from the different variations with matte/gloss finishes depending on usecase.
>>96120363Not saying you need rattlecans. There's brush-on primers available which take out the guess work of mixing ratios of craft glue and paint.
>>96122597Consider going out and collecting some rough-surfaced rocks. Just go for a walk in your local park or whatever and collect them, assuming it's legal to go fossicking where you live. If you can't be bothered to do that, you can scrunch up aluminium foil until it's a rock-hard lump and use that instead for applying texture to foam.
>>96127576Pre-made washes use specifically formulated mediums rather than just a lot of water. I'm sure it's still mostly water, but it's not entirely water.
>>96128240hyped to see this primed, please post more
>>96127303Not really, but ink (like artist's inks you can get cheaply per volume) + water + a tiny amount of dish soap to break the surface tension can approximate it pretty well.
How do you lads actually base your stuff?
I don't want warping or too much of a bevelled edge on everything, so I'm actually thinking like 1mm or 2mm plasticard.
>>96129989Also like, I have a little bit of the tism because I'm going to base my crates and stuff, I don't want painted stuff rawdogging the table
>>96129315>>96128240well, speaking of prime, I know spray will melt my foam, but I intend on adding a layer of grout to all the flat and slightly angled areas to function as sand. If I grout those areas and paint all the steep areas with two coats of cheap craft paint, will my foam be protected enough to prime the rest of the piece?
>>96130122No. Simply prime it with a brush on primer instead of using rattlecans. It won't even take all that much time and the risk of irreversibly fucking a large component of what you've built isn't worth the payoff of saving 5~ minutes of effort.
Gonna share this, built for fun to hang on my wall, but it was fun to sit down and put together a little 6mm board if I wanted to play some 28mm game systems at 6mm.
Also working on printing some VMT tiles to build myself a board for space ship boarding and what not in the future.
Here's ruined wall section I'm working on, did white glue thinned with brown paint to stick the sand on and I'm going to do a thinner batch of white glue+black paint over the top to hold it down, hopefully.
>>96130122I've done a layer of modge podge and still had it go all melty under, don't do it.
>>96132823Show the melted parts, might be useful. I know some people deliberately painted styrofoam blobs with melty shit to make asteroids and such.
>>96133085I didn't keep it, parts of it didn't firm back up again so I didn't want to put more effort into making it work. May as well experiment with your own styrofoam scraps, though.
>>96133085NTA and also styrofoam instead of regular foam but;
>>96086125This is what styrofoam looks like post-melting; the above is mine that I did with a heat gun. Attached is what a larger block looks like with non-melted for contrast. If you use solvents to melt it instead it makes a different texture again; kind of a negative looking one to what I achieved with the heat gun.
>>96133517Noted, when I get around to doing asteroids I'll just roast them a bit instead.
>>96133829Be sure to inhale the fumes.
>>96133829>>96133877The fumes are no joke. I was doing it in a very well ventilated room with a strong fan blasting directly past me and out the window and didn't heat the styrofoam to the point of it browning/blackening. I ended up with a pretty weird headache and general disorientation later in the day which I suspect was a very minor styrene poisoning case. Lesson be learned; if you think it's safe enough, go the extra step. Next time I do it, I'll be using breathing protection to boot.
Also by 'roast', I would strongly advise against throwing them in the oven. Use a hairdryer or a proper heat gun. It takes literally one second of exposure to sufficient heat to cause the above melting effect. It's extremely temperature sensitive.
Under no circumstances should you chuck this shit in an oven if that was your meaning. Even if you got the temperature just right, you're essentially hotboxing the styrene fumes, let alone the long term health impacts of remnant styrene remaining in said oven.
>>96133905I cut xps with a hot wire cutter in a room with 2 fans blowing in windows (one sucking air in the other blowing air out) and a mask on. Having a cool looking table top games ain't worth a black lung.
>>96133877>>96133905I'm brain damaged enough to not want any more, thank you. It's proper filter mask for me and if I'm gonna do any styrofoam roasting, I'll be doing it outside.

>>96134211Based. That sounds fucking cool.
>>96134211Also im stealing that idea and claiming it as my own.
>>96133926>>96133937Definitely the smart way to go. I made the mistake of assuming I had more than sufficient airflow and I was heat gunning the styrofoam at full arm's length away from me but apparently even 5 ppm is enough to cause symptoms of styrene poisoning. Shaking hands with danger is always best avoided.
>>96134211That sounds sick.

>>96136222Appreciate it. It's my first attempt at doing terrain and I'm pretty happy with it. I've also got a stockpile of other offcuts of styrofoam that I'm thinking of making into floating islands after heatgunning them. The hardest part was probably filling in all the pinholes where the white showed through since even in ideal lighting my eyes didn't pick it out, so I had to take a phone photo and examine that for obvious white bits. It didn't take especially long and it gave me a good reason to use a darker shade for more variety but it was more involved than going grug mode with a brush for half an hour.

So for structures I'll do 3d printing, and things like rocky hills will be DIY.
Like pic related.
How would I go about building something like the rocky "hills" in pic related?
>>96161180There's a bunch of different techniques you could use. You can buy sheets of XPS foam and use tools to achieve that kind of finish. Another option is clay, but that would be exceedingly heavy on it's own so you'd probably want a filler for the majority. Another way might be to get some of that gauze material that some hobbyists use, drape it over foam and use glue to achieve suitable shapes. After you've gotten the rock shape done you'll want to hit it with a combination primer and sealant like acrylic caulk mixed with paint, then you can use successive drybrushes of lighter greys to get that rocky colouration. Finally, glue and static grass.
There's probably other methods out there as well; youtube is extremely convenient for letting hobbyists share their methods. Go searching on youtube for how other people have done terrain and you'll pick up other approaches as well.
Been painting up this 3D-printed dice tower. I think I'm gonna call the bottom part done.
