Hacked out some quick and dirty pipe terrain for Necromunda ( for a game that ended up being cancelled....)
It was an easy project. Assembled random pvc pipe connectors and kids toy pipes, glued them to an old clipboard, spray primed a rusty brown, then stippled dollar store craft paints in various metallic and brown hues all over to give it a mottled rusty look. Poured a shitty green paint through the pipes and let it run for the sewer effect.By no means is it a display piece, but if you think you are too retarded to make functional terrain, try this one out.

Anonymous No.96025516

Nta, but there's two easy ways. You grab some small rocks from outside and then either manually press them into the foam, or you make your bricks and then throw them and some small stones into a tupperware or bowl or something and shake it up. Either way, it imprints the stony texture into the foam.

Multiple layers of cardboard glued together (number of layers depends on what you're trying to do with the board). Specifically moving boxes from either Home Depot or Lowe's (or your local equivalent) since they are made to be sturdier and more durable than regular cardboard. They're cheap too. Their large size box (27" width, 15" length "16 depth) gives you a good amount of cardboard to work with and will only cost you about $3 a box at the most.

Your terrain warps because all the paint, glue, etc is applied to only one side, so when the stuff dries snd contracts, it only pulls in one directions.

Next time tkmd you make a pond, paint both smthe top and bottom of the base with some mod podge, let it dry, then paint on your pond.
Also use a sturdy base to begin with. I've been buying cheap clipboards from the dollar store for terrain bases. They work great.

The main structure was built around two pieces of foam, a base from MDF, and a gate made by Archon Studio (the set is called Entances pack). Everyhing was glued together with montage glue and some barbecue skewers were added for stability between between the mountain face and terrace. In the pic you can see that the terrace is partially carved and partially covered by bricks and plates. With painting you can mix both styles easily. As for the gate it's balsa wood with plastic cross bars and nail decorations as rivets.

After that I've used a bunch of rock molds, bark (in some cases bark was smashed with a hammer to get some fine grain), and sand. I've glued the rocks first (they were cast in tier III dental plaster), and then I was filling the gaps between with small and smaller stuff. After that, everything got a layer of mod podge mixed with black paint, then black primer and zenithal highlight with white. When it comes to painting, it was mostly a mix of undertones (red, green, blue, and brown) that were dry-brushed with grays and then toned down with inks once more after tufts and moss were glued on.
Anonymous No.96048179 >>96049902

Yes, both faces. Before I ever use a base, I paint both sides and all edges with mod podge mixed with a little bit of water, and set it up so that the maximum amount of surface area can dry out. After this, I find you can glue and paint the top side as much as you want with no warping.

I have instances where I will type a word out, taking care to hit the right keys, and after I hit space to start the next word in my sentence it WILL scramble itself as if I had just mashed the keypad at random. Shit sucks and I don't understand why my phone does that. I brought it up with a mate of mine once while we were playing a campaign game of warhammer and he reckoned it may be to do with the standard software on the phone, he uses 3rd party apps for his keypad and never has this issue, and we both use the same brand(Samsung).

Nowadays it's probably the AI autocorrect going extra haywire. It always did random garbage once in a while, but ever since AI became the hot new crap to put into everything it's been replacing "of" with "or" and even sometimes replaces a correctly spelled word with a typo I made once even after I manually removed that typo from its memory. These things are getting actively worse. Just now in that sentence it replace are with "sre". But not that one.

One quick way to make these is to cut shapes out of a plastic tablecloth cover. You paint a water gradient on the reverse side, and then you get the gloss of the plastic cover on the presentation side.

They don't look as substantial as water features made from 3D materials, but they are also as close as you can get to water features that exist at the correct height without cutting into a tiled board. Water features that stand above the surface of the board always look a bit off.

Heat gunned some styrofoam and then glued it to an MDF backing, hit it with a base layer of acrylic caulk and brown/black acrylic paints, drybrushed with successively lighter browns over a day or so. Got it to where I'm happy with it, really like the texture the styrofoam emulates with that sort of bogged down muddy terrain that's seen a lot of foot traffic through it.

Next up is making modular grass to lay over the top of it once the stuff arrives in the next week or so, plus other bits of scatter terrain. The idea is that I can lay this down as-is for a muddy battlefield or put down modular bits to convert it to a muddy-ish field with plant life etc.

Got another two of these unpainted that I'm thinking I'll do up in a gray stone and brown-red stone with additional texture from sand to create different surface textures on the other boards, plus a bit extra from foamcore glued ontop.

If your forests are going to be flat and you have a jigsaw and a set of hole cutters for your drill you can make bases with insets to take out individual trees. Easy to magnetise if you have overly large top-heavy trees. Probably some premade laser cut ones out there too.

Many people use cloth to outline the forest and have individually based trees or copses that they plonk down on top of that.

Use non-neodymium magnets. You don't need insanely strong forces to adhere a piece of scatter terrain to your board. If your magnets are pulling up foam when you attempt removing your scatter terrain, that's using the wrong magnet for that purpose.

People default to the extremely strong magnets because a strong bond force is preferable on, say, individual miniatures having equipment swapped out. There's zero reason to use them for terrain. Magnetised terrain features are to hold them in place against jostling the table, not to essentially glue them down.

Find a suitable variety of magnet for your usecase, figure out the goldilocks zone on how far below the foam you need to embed them while retaining a decent amount of attractive force on any magnetised terrain and then do up a jig tool that pre-cuts that depth into your foam for easy removal and then gluing back in.

Literally just sit the trees on the forest base.

No magnets, no pins, no insets.

Just build a tree on a miniature base, dress that base so it also looks like forest floor, put lead under the base if you think it will be topheavy, and then place the tree base on the forest section.

Anonymous No.96120245 >>96120363

To the first; yes, but it requires either grabbing other people's ratios or experimenting on your own. Depending on how you value your time versus costs it might be preferable to just buy a ready made primer instead. There's also the risk of getting your mixture wrong for the purpose and it screws your project.

To the second, for paint on xps foam, yeah. There's no problems with that. Be aware that if you're using rattlecans, some of the propellants may chemically react and melt the foam.

At the end of the day, I recommend doing test pieces. No matter how much anecdotal evidence is given out by people online things can turn out contrary to their own experiences. Try things for yourself and see if they work.

To clarify, it's not a question of paint adhesion since MDF is pretty good on that front, but sealing - MDF is ridiculously thirsty and if you plan to do anything fancier than basic colors + drybrushing, it'll suck up all the moisture from paint, possibly including the paint itself, which is pretty noticeable on the finished result.

So a "wash" is just paint with a lot of water?
Anonymous No.96127401 >>96127576
>>96127303
More or less yes. Basically a wash is just a paint that has been diluted with a medium that will thin it and help it flow around more. A glaze is basically the same thing but thinned down even further with the intent to apply in layers over a surface to slowly tint it. You can make any paint into a wash, but it is easier/better to thin down inks to make washes due to how their pigmentation is concentrated.

>but it is easier/better to thin down inks to make washes
I just like to use paints for washes. I can choose any color I have. About 5-6 drops per drop of paint usually works for vallejo stuff which is what my LGS sells. Pre-made washes work super well, not sure what they do differently. As much as I hate GWs their washes like nuln oil and agrax earth shade are top notch.

>>96120363
Not saying you need rattlecans. There's brush-on primers available which take out the guess work of mixing ratios of craft glue and paint.

>>96122597
Consider going out and collecting some rough-surfaced rocks. Just go for a walk in your local park or whatever and collect them, assuming it's legal to go fossicking where you live. If you can't be bothered to do that, you can scrunch up aluminium foil until it's a rock-hard lump and use that instead for applying texture to foam.

well, speaking of prime, I know spray will melt my foam, but I intend on adding a layer of grout to all the flat and slightly angled areas to function as sand. No. Simply prime it with a brush on primer instead of using rattlecans. It won't even take all that much time and the risk of irreversibly fucking a large component of what you've built isn't worth the payoff of saving 5~ minutes of effort.

The fumes are no joke. I was doing it in a very well ventilated room with a strong fan blasting directly past me and out the window and didn't heat the styrofoam to the point of it browning/blackening. I ended up with a pretty weird headache and general disorientation later in the day which I suspect was a very minor styrene poisoning case. Lesson be learned; if you think it's safe enough, go the extra step. Next time I do it, I'll be using breathing protection to boot.

Also by 'roast', I would strongly advise against throwing them in the oven. Use a hairdryer or a proper heat gun. It takes literally one second of exposure to sufficient heat to cause the above melting effect. It's extremely temperature sensitive.

Under no circumstances should you chuck this shit in an oven if that was your meaning. Even if you got the temperature just right, you're essentially hotboxing the styrene fumes, let alone the long term health impacts of remnant styrene remaining in said oven.

Appreciate it. It's my first attempt at doing terrain and I'm pretty happy with it. I've also got a stockpile of other offcuts of styrofoam that I'm thinking of making into floating islands after heatgunning them. The hardest part was probably filling in all the pinholes where the white showed through since even in ideal lighting my eyes didn't pick it out, so I had to take a phone photo and examine that for obvious white bits. It didn't take especially long and it gave me a good reason to use a darker shade for more variety but it was more involved than going grug mode with a brush for half an hour.

There's a bunch of different techniques you could use. You can buy sheets of XPS foam and use tools to achieve that kind of finish. Another option is clay, but that would be exceedingly heavy on it's own so you'd probably want a filler for the majority. Another way might be to get some of that gauze material that some hobbyists use, drape it over foam and use glue to achieve suitable shapes. After you've gotten the rock shape done you'll want to hit it with a combination primer and sealant like acrylic caulk mixed with paint, then you can use successive drybrushes of lighter greys to get that rocky colouration. Finally, glue and static grass.

There's probably other methods out there as well; youtube is extremely convenient for letting hobbyists share their methods. Go searching on youtube for how other people have done terrain and you'll pick up other approaches as well.
