What are the best near-future and cyberpunk settings around other than *the* Cyberpunk and Netrunner? I never ever glanced over other near-future universes other than these two and I am in a mood for grabbing a handful of sourcebooks and digging into something new.

It's less "pure" cyberpunk and more "what if Shadowrun, but good" but I really loce Ventangle. It's a slick, rules-lite ero-RPG set in a crashed starship turned cyberpunk megacity full of fun locales, cool tech, and underdistricts chock full of all sorts of biohorrors, tech abominations, magical monstrosities, and general freaks. Plus it's made by Ryo, the guy behind Nechronica and even borrows some of the concepts and ideas he used in Nech, as well as some reimagined NPCs from Nech and other games he's made.

It doesn't have all the expansion material yet, but the wiki is your best bet for info, especially since we can't post pdfs on /tg/ anymore
https://ventangle.miraheze.org/wiki/Main_Page
I thimk the MTL pdfs for expansions are also on the wiki but I haven't checked in a while so I can't say for sure.

I will say Vent is honestly one of my favorite systems and settings.

Glad to help! I also heartily recommend Tokyo NOVA, especially if you're looking for "pure" cyberpunk, though the expansions do introduce some supernatural stuff if you want vampires in your cyberpunk. It uses a playing card based system instead of dice which is real fun, and it's vibe is much more "high octane 80s action OVA" over the more gritty stimulationist vibes of CP2020/RED. It abstracts miney and resources into a singular metacurrency and there's no humanity system so you can get chromed to the gills if you have the resources for it. There's even a specific cosmetic mod to make yourself look boxy and shiny like some sort of low polygon motherfucker.

That's really bizarre, because Nechronica is literally all about hope, friendship, and triumphing over despair. Also, every Ryo game is completely different in tone, or do you also avoid Ryuutama because Nechronica hurt your feelings?

Ventangle is imo way more bleak and depressive, and that's just because it's your standard cyberpunk setup, only with magic to make everything more fucked up - like plucking your soul out of your body and shoving it into animalistic manual labor meat machines for a few years/decades - and the fat cats at the top are literally ageless Eternal Leading Figures (ELFs).

Really, I don't get why you're in a thread about cyberpunk systems/settings if a game about hope and friendship triumphing over death itself is "too bleak and fucked up". I think you might need to go to DnD General and find yourself some Weenie Hut Jr. settings, because Cyberpunk is inherently about bleak, fucked up worlds full of bleak, fucked-up people.

Nechronica is all about struggling to see the light in the dark and finding your place in the long, long sequel alongside your friends. You can have a super hope-pilled Nechronica game if you want. I'd say it's pretty easy, even; all the ones I've played in have had hopeful endings (although the two I ran myself were downers, I'll grant you that).

Also one of my friends who plays forged in the dark stuff swears by "Runners in the Shadows" which I think is meant to be legally distinct shadowrun.

Nta but Shadowrun has never been particularly bleak though. Magic and technomancy acts as equalizers against corpos fucking everything up despite them literally running the world. Even dragons got humbled when they try shit. Shadowrun might be fantasy cyberpunk but is more more hopeful than most cyberpunk settings.

This is literally because of the hack, the PDF upload shit is how they took down the site because the staff post-moot genuinely don't know how to update the site and are tech illiterate. The hack revealed that this site still uses the same codebase that it did in 2015 with only small modifications like the new captcha and stuff. The site is still hosted on old 2010s computers that moot got on the cheap too. The site unironically died when moot sold it because the new staff doesn't know how to maintain it and has no interest in doing so.

Shadowrun is plenty bleak in concepts, but the fact Billy Talks-like-Thunder is a legitimate character concept and possibly the group's power house makes it come across as more cartoonish.
Hell as fucked up and dark as the Renraku Arcology adventure is, little things like advertisements about the important of getting your kid augs early so they can be good worker drones, is something out of a 90s B Movie.
Also the fact that a section of the adventure is about Da Vinci turning out to be an immortal elf who hid some special code in a secret room on a secret computer inside this facility where AM has taken over, and the only reason to recover it is to help settle a bet between some dragons...
That's just ridiculous and kind of makes you forget about all of the slaughter, torture, turning people into drones, etc that is going on in the Arcology.

I don't particularly like shadowrun as a setting (or game) but one thing I did find amusing is that the concept of shadowrunners is taken literally in setting and does a decent job of showing how commercialized even that is with runners having their own tv shows where they broadcast their "runs" and even shadowrunner table top game being a thing in setting.

As such, the corpos have won in all regard and the bleak reality of having high ideals as a kid and being a corporate head hunter to pay the bills comes across rather well.

Exactly
In a world where Karl Kombatmage exists, but also there's loads of protests against fantasy elements in TV shows trivializing real life... But also there's a well known political organization called the Sons of Sauron, it paints the picture or an incredibly silly world closer to 2000AD than Cyberpunk.

Though you do definitely see that when the devs said Earthdawn is about being heroic explorers discovering the ruins of the old world and making new legends of good, while Shadowrun is what if evil won before those heroes were even born, they meant it and baked it into the setting.
Almost every new discovery or concept introduced in the first few generations of books are inherently corrupted before they ever reach the public, if not were found already corrupt thanks to how fucked to world is.

But that doesn't stop the pink mohawk rocker from doing an amazing show and starting a riot.

Shadowrun is your typical cyberpunk dystopia except all the rich bastards at the top are literally immortal elves and dragons playing long games you can't hope to comprehend and also there's ghost bugs in the walls waiting to eat your soul if you misstep. Oh, also you can be born with soul autism and only machines will accept you as kin.

It may not be the most downer cyberpunk dystopia out there, but there's not really a lot of hope for things to get better.

The except is the elves and dragons part.
That said he leaves out the best part of how early Shadowrun leans hard into this with one of the most famous adventure modules being a series of seemingly uncommon jobs that are basically just helping a crazy elf get revenge for a slight inflicted upon him by another elf back in the Renaissance.

Not to mention basically every piece of official lore is an idea book of various ways the dolls can be abused.
It's a great game, but I don't think it should be advertized as something else than derpiest grimderp (as a system. Every Necromancer naturally running it how they like)

Transhuman Space isn't super cyberpunk, but it's a pretty cool near future setting (2100). It was written c. 2000, so it has some surprisingly prescient stuff (including a still-authoritarian China as the largest economic power and a major bloc that is ideologically Islamist), but also some things that, err, did not happen at all (NK and SK reunify in the 10s).

May I suggest some tasteful biopunk? Check out The Windup Girl.
It's a post-collapse post-global warming world, but where biotech are still kinda ubiquitous, thanks to them not needed fossile energy source.
So people use beefed-up elephants as tractors, GMO crops are a staple, there's a lot of mutant invasive species and Japan created a few breeds of GM humans.

It's "What if Cyberpunk but with Monsanto?" rather than "What if Steampunk but with flesh instead of cogs?" kind of biopunk, which is the best kind, if you ask me.

You are too stupid to live, but calling others dumb. Here's what I was referring to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZsgNFyPEAs

Becca: "Hey! I ain't good at playing just friends!"
Kiwi: "Considered shaking up your approach?"
Becca: "Yeah? How you figure? 'Stead of hot and loud, I try cold, distant, and nerdy?"

No, try having fat tits, dumbass. It's 2077, if you can get blue skin, you can get a boobjob.

You can have biopunk without rooting it in cyberpunk, where everything runs on flesh little to no involvement of machines - Orc Stain, Scorn, arguably Flintstones.

Seriously? You can't imagine what "ero" might be short for?

Erotic, it's short for erotic. It's a cumgame TRPG. Though the system itself is pretty easily divorced from the ero aspects and Ryo even made an "All-Range Mode" that pressure washes all the cum away. I think it's weaker for that since casual debauchery and cyberpunk go hand in hand, but I get it since in this very thread you've got people wringing their hands because they're too squeamish for fucking Nechronica.

Ventangle pretty much does that with the people running the show being debauched magical immortals or cybergods that feed off "worship" through streaming entertaining stuff.

You can even take a passive where you livestream all your actions and gain a few credits every time you roll well during fighting or fucking, though it comes at the cost of no longer reducing Karma post-fight/fuck.

THS is great because it has such an unusual point of divergence. Lots of the great RPGs that reference real world history came out in the 1980s, so they have the USSR still around and what not. THS has a post-9/11 but pre Iraq War point of divergence which results in some cool alt history like South Africa not being a shithole (since they were on an upward trajectory until 2012 or so IRL)

South Africa's GDP per capita has fallen since a 2011 peak and then mostly flatlined.

In general, THS has a slightly-off developmental model because it's been ~25 years since it was written. It greatly underestimated how fast countries can develop - it has the PRC become a larger economy than the USA in 2070, when the PRC has larger GDP (PPP) today, and probably will have larger nominal GDP in the ~2030s at current rates.

By extension, when they were looking for an "African powerhouse," they picked South Africa (reasonable enough, given its upward trajectory at the time), but then left the entire rest of Sub-Saharan Africa poor as fuck. Also did my boys in Botswana dirty, having them as tagalongs to SA's advance, when in reality they've outpaced it.

Interesting. Mostly because of it tells of what other people think about when they attempt to be prescient based solely on what they can observe in the present.

>>96071292
True. People focus on what they see right now and extrapolate the next year or so into a decade without considering that prescience is compounding, not simple. Doubt anyone considered Covid popping up or the fucking NFT/Crypto/Gen-LLM scams popping up. Did they?

There was citizen science that was crowdsourcing data collection to private volunteers. But I guess they never thought people could crowdsource each other. To add depth to a setting, you should take an aspect of the world you see and try to expand on it; Assume people buy-in on it or that it is successful instead of trying to find the path to it becoming successful.
