Why should any would be adventurer enter a dungeon in sandals? Invest in proper boots or foot wear please

I used to go backpacking all over the sierra nevadas and would wear sandals or go barefoot. Shoes are a pain in the ass. Sandals are the superior footwear if you absolutely must wear something that gives you worse grip and balance and no ability to feel the ground beneath you.

All right, so stick to your historicals and let people who enjoy fantasy be.
It isn't that hard.

An adventurer would benefit from superior terrain awareness.
>>96006169 (OP)
This thread is assuredly a case of 'innovative tactics are warranted' in the wild, but there's some reason to use sandals or soft-soled shoes rather than heavier duty footwear. Sound, the aforementioned terrain factor, but also the ability to quickly ditch them (depending on the form they take).

Hot, wet climate. Sandals are well ventillated and drain easily making the generally a better option when it's hot and wet.

Try steel instead of iron. Iron was well known in the bronze age but pure iron is softer than bronze. On the other hand, smelting iron tends to create tiny bits of steel and nobody would know why for thousands of years.

Yeah, I think iron is going to have a huge range in hardness but also part of the challenge is understanding how all of it works paired with consistency in temperatures and reaching the needed melting points.
Also, I recall seeing some discussion ages ago about the metallurgy of Greek bronze versus Persian bronze at the time of Marathon. The material properties of Greek bronze was generally better than that of the Persians, affording them better individual soldier capability on the battlefield, apparently.

Because a lot of the reason people might think for adventurers to wear boots are contingent on modern innovations that wouldn't be applicable to the usual fantasy milieu. The main reason I see cited is protection from traps, but boots aren't going to meaningfully protect you from traps made for anything but small game. There's a reason punji sticks were so dreaded until the US literally just said fuck it and inserted an armor plate in between the bottom layers of boots. Another problem is that footwear generally had terrible traction until leather soles were invented. Sometimes you would see people try to mitigate this by pounding nails/cleats/etc. into the soles, but that only worked for some surfaces and was an active impediment on things like stone. The only real reason would be to provide minor protection against bugs or mild irritants like brush and thistle.

For cold weather, sure. That being said, my point is that not all sandals are made out of leather. You could make sandals out of wood or plant fibers like straw. Straw weighs practically nothing so you could make entirely new sandals out of a pound of straw.
