Anyone ever publish a free campaign/one shot scenario on DTRPG? I've written a few scenarios I wanted to publish for free there, just as a hobby, but the issue I'm running into is that if I want to use art, I either have to pay someone, learn to draw, or use AI.

Well I don't really wanna pay people for a hobby I don't plan on making money on, I absolutely suck at art, and I'm adverse to using AI for something that isn't personal use that I plan on releasing publicly. I've looked into copyright free art websites but they often don't have images that depict the scene that I want.

I'm wondering what people that release scenarios for free on DTRPG are doing? Are they just paying artists? Are they using AI despite the kind of backlash it gets in RPG circles?
Is there a decent website for free use fantasy/scifi/cyberpunk art they use?

A lot of the folks releasing for free are just using royalty-free art you can buy for like $5-$20, or public domain art. If you feel you really need a specific piece of art, you'll have to pay someone to make it or make it yourself.

I released a book on DTRPG - Twisted Shadows Compendium of the Dark Elves. I spent under 2k on art, going into debt, because anything that I create, that I put my soul into, is not going to have an illustration generated by a machine. Simple as. I'd rather release something with no art or shitty art than AI illustrations.

Royalty free art is a thing, fair use art is a thing.

They use AI, or cheap art, or really bad art, or really bad cheap art.

The internet outrage over AI pictures is mostly just more phony twitter blah-blah that doesn't exist in the real world. People don't actually lose their shit and spill spaghetti all over the floor because AI exists. It's just a chance for people to feel morally superior without having to actually do anything, and bored fatasses on the internet deeply enjoy that sense of validation.

if there's AI art, it's 100% justified to assume that the text might be AI too.

Wrong. I'm morally superior to you and any book that includes AI art because I chose not to include any.

Nah, I dislike AI art in the shit I buy because I pay for the craft put in it. If you are going to use AI art, lower the price and label it as such if AI isn't that big of a deal.

It's like wanting to buy a handcrafted chair and then you are told that it's actually just an IKEA chair that was made to look handmade, but it was not stated despite being sold in a store that usually sold handcrafted chairs. It's disingenous at best and a scam at worst.

That's the plan. So what's the problem?
You're free to use AI, and I'm free to call your product trash.

So don't buy the things people are in a thread talking about publishing for free, I guess?

Absolutely none. We're both in agreement. You'll virtue signal on the internet, and the rest of us won't care. You and I are in 100% alignment.

It's not. He's posted it many, many times on /tg/. It's um... well he put a lot of work into it and released it for free. So good on him.

Thanks! It's also in one of the Troves, in case you don't want to make an account on DTRPG.

You seem to be operating from a false premise. Art is not actually necessary in the first place.

find someone who is fine with drawing for your material as a hobby
obviously not going to get professional level of art unless you pay for it

You don't need to pay an artist commission. There is a lot of stock art for sell, like Dean Spencer. But you can also go trawling through the public domain and find stuff that fits too.

But DESU you should probably just use A.I. now and be fine. The people who don't like it are far outnumbered by those that don't care.
