Hoping to get some feedback friends.
I'm putting together a game to pitch to my table but i'm on the fence about what system to run it in.
THE CONCEPT
>In an alternate America where the South won its independence, but rapidly faced secessions of its own, The Monroe Republic is a hillbilly Texan puppet state in the Missouri Ozarks
>The constant border raids and bloodshed have led to all manner of bandits, freaks, spirits and cryptids terrorizing the hollers and towns
>Enter the Abel (sic) Squadron, 13th Company, Monroe Rangers - an underfunded band of shellshocked die hards to give their life to put down the wicked things that roam
Feel wise, I want it to be evocative of Hunt: Showdown meets the Witcher, a series of small 1-3 shot adventures that are both very lethal and require smarts / creativity.
To that end, I'm leaning towards my comfort zone of just hacking together Call of Cthulhu, Delta Green, and maybe Pulp Cthulhu. Maybe a dash of Friday Night Firefight.
That said, I wanted to see if anyone had experience with / feedback on:
>Deadlands
>Dogs in the Vineyard
>Any other western style games I'm not thinking of
Also, general Southern Gothic / Weird South Thread
>>96021611 (OP)CoC 7e with Pulp rules would work best for a Hunt game. Strip out the Lovecraft shit and trim down the skill list (both extremely easy to do) and you've got the closest thing to perfect.
>>96021611 (OP)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X61XvT8p7aM&list=RDX61XvT8p7aM
>take my soul from me>'cause I don't want to bleed
>>96021611 (OP)Just some additional artwork for fun.
Also, I briefly considered the Old Gods of Appalachia game but immediately figured it would be trash. Anyone have evidence to the contrary?
>>96021615So it's not just me then? Totally agree.
My players bust my balls for using CoC & its derivatives so often but it's just so damn good at what it does
>>96021663CoC is probably the best system for any kind of investigative, horror, or survival game you'd ever wanna run.
>>96021646>Old Gods of AppalachiaFrom what I understand it takes a very "West Coast Californian Liberal Arts School" view of Appalachia and the American South in general. That is to say it casually shits on all of the culture and all of the people in the name of making the writers feel intellectually and morally superior.
>>96021611 (OP)Dogs is gonna be less about monsters and more about the monsters inside of men. Unless you're going for a more philosophical take, I wouldn't use it for your monster hunting game, especially with the resolution being more of a "what are you willing to sacrifice" instead of like, making a tactical plan.
In terms of lore/feel, it's definitely a lot more Western and specifically Mormon. I am just unsure what you would gain from it beyond maybe a couple things you can take for flavor?
>>96021685>people who disagree with me are from California This bitch ain't even from Appalachia and he's complaining.
Klan vs Baldknobbers action?
Stills?
The Dust Bowl?
Limestone and red clay?
Mark Twain National forest?
Mississippi and White Rivers?
Its an area rich with character.
>>96021611 (OP)DitV is principally a story game about avoiding escalating conflicts if at all possible. Its resolution mechanic is fun and works well, but is not well-suited to running lots of combat encounters, especially not complex ones. It's simply too abstract for that.
>>96021750Hey bud, you know that you can buy hair dye in states other than California?
>>96021778Totally agree!
Here's the cheat sheet map I'm currently working with. The basic vibes are
>Capitol is in Rolla, with its beating heart being two railroads, one a joint Anglo-Union to cuck the Texans and a Texan one to cuck the Union.>I want the players to be garrisoned out of Poplar Bluffs (where my Borrasca fans?) to be my 'plucky frontier town beset by threats'. Bushwackers, Klan / Bk shootouts, runaway slaves & slave catchers, there's all manner of hectic shit crossing through the hills even without the ghosts and monsters>The Monroe Republic takes its name and flag from the Monroe Rebellion where a bunch of political prisoners started a guerilla campaign against the Confederacy after being dissatisfied by Richmond's policies>The flag represents the bright red banner and blue / white striped prisoner uniforms the initial guerillas wore>Also the Republic is barely funded enough to survive the constant border skirmishes and other such nonsense, and the Rangers even less so, so the party has ready access to take on 'extracurriculars', which range from raiding a bank carriage in kansas to monster hunts out of the witcherReally looking forward to it, guys. This game is gonna be sick.
>>96021691>>96021865Great feedback. That's what I was thinking but I'm not familiar enough with Dogs to have been sure off the jump.
>>96021947Do you already have players?
>>96021976Yeah I have a list of candidates from my usual group. Whenever I do weirdo games like this I try to exclude the
>adhd / no attention span players>lmao wacky haha players>'ummm that's heckin problematic' playersSo that leaves like 4 or 5 candidates. As long as I can get three consistently I think it'll work out great.
This is all IRL so it may or may not resemble what y'all get up to
>>96022001Sound rad as all get out.
>>96022001Insanely based. Good luck!
>>96021646I like Old Gods. But they went with 5e when CoC or Unkown Armies or DOGS are all RIGHT THERE.
>>96022286Its cypher system, not 5e. Which, in a lot of way is even weirder. I don't understand the Cypher ecosystem.
>>96022082>>96022215Thanks guys, I've got high hopes
>The Ozark Howler, or the Ozark Black Howler, is a cryptid whose frightening sound and eerie appearance has been seen in the more remote parts of the Missourian and Arkansan Ozarks and even farther west in Oklahoma and south in Texas.
>It is typically described as being around the size of a bear, with a thick body, stocky legs, black shaggy hair, and having prominent horns.
>Its cry is often described as being a combination of a wolfโs howl and an elkโs bugle.
>Skeptics claim that itโs an eastern cougar, a black bear, or some kind of wolf or feral hound, but sightings have been officially recorded since the 1950โs.
>Though many Ozark families can pass on stories of their parents and grandparents experiencing the chill of seeing the Ozark Howler well before that time.
What is a "feedback friend"?
>The hidebehind is a nocturnal fearsome critter from that preys upon humans that wander the woods, and was blamed for the disappearances of early loggers when they failed to return to camp.
>As its name suggests, the hidebehind is said to be able to conceal itself.
>When an observer attempts to look directly at it, the creature quickly hides behind an object or behind the observer and therefore cannot be directly seen.
>The hidebehind supposedly uses this ability to stalk human prey without being observed and to attack them without warning.
>Victims are then dragged back to the creature's lair to be devoured.
>>96021611 (OP)>Dogs in the VineyardNot a bad system, I liked that betting thing. In the only game of it I played, I reproduced the "it's all in the reflexes" scene from Big Trouble in Little China by raising.
Apparently it has some mormon shit in the written setting, but I have no clue about the american history at all, so it went over my head.
>>96021741>>96021906NTA but That Anon never said they were from California, but rather that the attitude was that of a "West Coast Californian Liberal Arts School" ... but I'm sure a smart white boy like yourself already understood that and you just wanted to be an ignorant dick anyway.
Old Gods of 5Eppalachia does read like a West Coast Liberal Arts School text, but I myself would put it directly in Eugene, Oregon cuz that's the school that handed out a PhD to a dumbshit for her work on gendering icebergs (shit you not, look it up).
>>96021611 (OP)>>96021615>>96021668>>96021663Raiders of R'lyeh would probably be a better fit for Southern Gothic. Less HPL to begin with, and the skill list fits the theme/setting better.
Toss in the sanity system from The Misery Engine and it would be difficult to find better.
>>96021611 (OP)This here's a monster hunter rpg and it's very Southern.
>>96034017You keep saying it has something to do with 5e, which makes me think you haven't actually read the book you're complaining about.
>>96021750They look like the trashy people you see by the droves once you leave the suburbs of any Southern city. They seem like they'd know what they're talking about.
>>96025193People who will give you constructive criticism instead of just telling you to kill yourself.
I understand the necessity of avoiding any sort of world building on /tg/ but you should take some time for yourself to consider how the South survived and what happened afterwards. The Southโs commodity exporting economy produced little by way of manufactured goods like firearms & steam engines so are the most common examples war surplus, euro imports, or Northern reparations (as goods or whole factories)? Depending on the answers, being distant from ocean-going ports will either suck or double suck.
The warโs settlement could also inform the state of the Mason-Dixie Line ie is there a Rampart Against Yankee Tyranny a la Deadlands or is it just more dusty frontier to raid across?
Again, best not to post about it here, but worth considering.
