>>96029764 (OP)The cursed belt of genderswap is a classic for a reason. Its the perfect "baby's first cursed item" to throw at a new group of players, because it has zero mechanical impact that would potentially cost them a fight, but it throws a pretty hard to ignore roleplay curveball at them until they find a way to get it fixed. Its an embarrassing slap on the wrist that lets them learn how cursed items work, while also throwing them into an unexpected situation that pushes them to set their own goals beyond you just throwing quests and dungeons at them (assuming, of course, that the affected played feels motivated to undo the curse) and also acts as a good litmus test for the roleplaying chops of the group as a result.
If the player just completely ignores the effects of the curse and refuse to acknowledge it happened, you know you have a player that you can't really do anything with story-wise. This is a guy who made a combat machine and gives zero fucks about anything when initiative isn't rolled.
If the player shits himself over it, you know you have a player that can't handle *anything* happening to his character, not event things that are temporary and don't actually harm them, and is probably self-inserting as a power fantasy.
If the player player can't resist screaming about trannies OR turning it into a magical realm thing, you've revealed important red flags, etc.
For such a simple item it tells you a lot about the group of players the moment the curse goes off. Its an excellent filter.
