Play against jews. I used to hang out at an internet-cafe/hookah-lounge under the freeway in Los Angeles, and this mob of like a dozen hasidic jewish boys would come in around 3am every morning and beat the shit outa me and my friends at backgammon.
That's not realistic advice. But it's a fun game. Just keep playing it.

and thanks, I have watched some of his youtube videos. I am torn about getting Magriel's book 'Backgammon'. on the one hand: "it's the Bible!" on the other hand: "it's dated and the computer has torn it to shreds!!"
